Everyone always says to skip Clear Sky, but I played it, and with the latest patch there's less bugs than in SoC.
It's a shame, but under the bugs lies a really solid game. It still has the atmosphere and locations of SoC, with all the gear upgrading of CoP.
Yeah I have. I bought it on release. I stopped playing it around the time I was getting mugged for all my equipment and bandits in leather jackets were surviving close-range shotgun blasts to the head.

If patches have sorted out a lot of the mess though then it's probably worth a look. I couldn't really get behind the faction wars system either, the loner exploration aspect of Stalker always appealed to me more.

Resistance. Both of them.

They won't die I tell you!!
This, this, this...

My friend and I would spend hours taking turns and dying roughly at the same spot each time.

I don't know if he ever beat it but I certainly never borrowed it to tackle it alone.

Hard because of it's flaws ? S.T.A.L.K.E.R because of the glitches and lackluster area design, still a really good game though.

By design ? F.E.A.R no question.

Seconded...or thirded, I dunno.
I have friends that aren't interested in Resistance since they love their Halolz or CoD too much (being PC gamers), so I have to go at it solo, so yaaay.

Didn't find Stalker THAT hard. Sure it's no easy FPS, but it's not the hardest I've been around.
I dunno, perhaps ARMA II?

Trespasser. First few levels, ok. But near the end, it gets impossible. Even with all the cheats on (especially since god mode doesn't work)

I doubt most escapists would know that game. But I love it anyway.

If I am only to count the ones I have actually played (and exclude Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and all that stuff), I'd go with Return to Castle Wolfenstein for the xbox. Especially Heinrich I eats bullets like they are made out of newspapers.
RTCW was actually pretty easy, if you took the time to lure enemies into envirormental hazards. And I saved up all my minigun ammo just for Heinrich, so he wasn't hard.

The hardest on normal difficulty...that I have played, would be Syphon Filter for the PS one.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising

as if the ridiculously observant AI and 1-3 shot deaths werent enough, the game decided to glitch for me near the end, making it completely unbeatable. its definitely hard to beat a game that isnt beatable

If you can figure out what you're supposed to be doing you're a damn sight better at the game than i was...

Killzone 2 has my vote. Did a playthrough on what would be normal and for some reason thought I was playing Resistance 2 on Superhuman.

Trust me, Clear Sky is worse.

OP: Far Cry (1) is pretty hard, same with Deus Ex. Deus Ex only became "easy" when you had put yourself in a different mindset than run 'n' gun.

My vote goes for ArmA II, namely because it's probably the closest to actual "realism" any shooter has actually gotten and if you don't learn proper ballistics and aiming it only takes maybe 2-3 shots to get wounded, and it really forces you to learn proper range/aiming as well as how to spot an enemy from about 100 yards away before they do.

Its hard because you have the durability of a sheet of paper, it's hard because ammo is about as easy to find as a plot in pac man and it's hard because radiation fucking everywhere.

But fuck it, I love it.
Fortunately, everybody else is also made of paper.

Unfortunately, there are more of them than you.
And your hands emit some kind of radiation that makes gun barrels corrode.

OT: I'd have to say GRAW is the most difficult I can think of. At least in STALKER I can just drill everyone in the back of the head and move on before they realize I'm there.

Ive played quite a few games with mindboggling difficulty settings, but for some reason I only remember Gears of War. I think the pc version of GoW was actually more difficult than the xbox version. The endboss was quite hard to do on the easiest difficulty. (get out of cover for a second and youre toast) Playing without coop on the hardest difficulty is funnnn.. I made it up to the boss on the last difficulty setting but didnt feel masochistic enough to try and beat him..

Oh yea and theres Unreal.
I play through Crysis/Warhead on Delta like a breeze but I had difficulties in Unreal even on the normal setting. I cant imagine what the "Unreal" difficulty setting is like.
But, well the game is 13 years old.. standards were different back then ^^
