Probably raven shield, which also happens to be my favourite FPS to date. Pure awesomeness.

Edit: I also agree with the other guy above, STALKER is not hard at all. Seriously, try a FPS with realistic damage and then tell me what's hard.

Far Cry 2, not because of the task of the story or anything, just the horrible programming.

Killzone 2 is pretty hard, but it's mostly because the reticule bloom is absolutely horrible.

I know it's probably easier when you've got the right plasmids, but I'm really having trouble with Bioshock.

And only because it won't let me see what the fuck is going on when things are actually happening. Explosions, blurry cam and weird water effects just mean I can't tell which way I'm supposed to turn.

And I swear those hacked gun turrets kill me with friendly fire more than they ever did when they were actually aiming for me.

Not sure, I always play FPS games at the hardest difficulty and deal with it. From what I've played, it would seem either Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon, but that's only if you're an obsessive perfection.

Yeah true, I played raven shield though without loosing any men, that makes it harder!

Would it be mean to say the OP must suck at Crysis?
A bit mean, but right now... yeah, I do.

I've just recently got back into single player gaming, and Crysis is the most modern shooter I've played. Prior to that I'd have to go back to Return to Castle Wolfenstein (which is pretty old school in the way it works) and Halo (which is just easy) so it's been a learning curve. Crysis's special abilities and regenerating health would make the player invincible in a game like Doom, but it seems that modern games compensate for the ubiquitous health regen by ensuring enemies can take you from 100% healthy to dead in about 3 seconds if they get the drop on you.

I'm enjoying it though, and I just got through a section without having to restart once, so I must be getting better, or at least sucking less.

...on normal difficulty?

I picked up Crysis during the recent steam sale. I was pleasantly surprised to discover my mid-specs pc can run it on high settings (how technology marches on, eh) and suitably impressed by the visuals. It really is a great looking game.

I've been surprised at how hard it is though. You'd think that a rapidly recharging temp invisibility power would be like god mode, but the NKA are shooting me to bits on a regular basis, and I dread to think of how rough it's going to get when the aliens show up. Don't get me wrong... I quite like the fact that the game will cheerfully throw 10 man patrols at me, but I'm seeing that on-screen message quite often. You know, the one that oh so subtly reminds you that you can lower the difficulty level.

So what's the hardest single player FPS you've played, why was it so hard, and did you enjoy the extra challenge?
System shock 2.
If you run out of the correct type of ammo when you need it (especially against the station security) you have no chance. Easily the hardest "normal setting" FPS ever!

Games from Ice Pick Lodge spring to mind:

Pathologic

&

The Void.

Pathologic is like nothing you've ever played before and most people find The Void impossible on their first (and several subsequent) playthroughs. Minaly because there are overall timelimits to the game and it is entirely possible to fuck yourself over quite early on.

I thought Borderlands was pretty tough if you didn't grind to level up or go co-op.
No it wasn't, it was impossible NOT to reach max level if you did all the sidequests and since all that dying did was take away a percentage of your money, I can't think of any point that could really be defined as difficult. I'm only having trouble on my second playthrough killing the guy with the binary cannon. And that's more because of the way I specced my character than anything.

I've heard that Clear Sky is a lot harder. Haven't gotten around to playing it yet tho, still messing around in SoC. It's awesome!
Edit: ninjad by OP! D:
Don't bother and skip straight to the third game. Clear Sky was a mess.
Okay, granted for the first 6 months, no-one could even finish the game (myself included) but once they patched it, I've had no troubles since. It's a great game. I suggest you go back to it, it ties in with SoC heavily.

Scratch that... Far Cry 2. Worst piece of shit in history. Guards seem to magically respawn their posts and also, I had to wait half an hour for all my gamesaves on pc to load up.
I'm amazed I even finished that horrible clusterfuck excuse for "entertainment".

Its hard because you have the durability of a sheet of paper, it's hard because ammo is about as easy to find as a plot in pac man and it's hard because radiation fucking everywhere.

But fuck it, I love it.
Fortunately, everybody else is also made of paper.

Unfortunately, there are more of them than you.
And then out of NOWHERE, a bandit in exoskeleton jumps out

OH SHIT, OH SHIT, OH SHIT FUCK SHIT!

Run away, chuck all your grenades, get the shotgun out, rush when he reloads.

ONLY.SHIT.THAT.WORKS! (Until you get decent mid-range weapons like the AK. Anything before that is LULZ-crappy on anything further than 15m distance)

So I guess I`ts one more for STALKER then.

And to people saying Ghost Recon was difficult. Say WHAAAAAT?!?!?! Sure you could easily die, but you have these dudes of awesome reflex and aim that kills anything thats in their view. (so just don`t position them facing a wall or something. You DID position them right did you? or did you rush Duke Nukem style guns ablaze? sigh)

Bioshock...hahaha yeah right.

In all seriousness, probably Half-Life 2, at least on normal. I must have died hundreds of times on that one playthrough.
