Operation Flashpoint, seriously the AI can headshot you from the bottom of a very steep hill, and you can't even look up properly!
I'll go with this too. I don't mind dying to a single shot, it's when I have to shoot them four times before they even flinch that it gets annoying. And the time limits...

At least there are checkpoints. Every twenty minutes.

Have to agree with this. I don't normally play FPS but someone recommended it to me, and I was thinking is it supposed to be this hard????

Its hard because you have the durability of a sheet of paper, it's hard because ammo is about as easy to find as a plot in pac man and it's hard because radiation fucking everywhere.

But fuck it, I love it.
Dont forget randomly catching fire or being torn apart :) Ohhh and the damn dogs, and the blood sucking invisible monsters and ..... :D

Stalker : SOC & CS are awesomely hard. Call of Pripryat not s o much its way more hand holdy and noob frindly but still has the fundamentals, a good intro to Stalker though Id play 3 then 2 then 1 :D

Operation Flashpoint/Arma/Arma2 are good examples of hard but their hard due to shitty AI spotting you from miles away & unbeleivably accurate shooting :/. Its not a fair hard :D

Stalkers totally fair hard, itll kill you as soon as let you live, whether your in an action man jumper & carrying a Tokarev or in an experimentally upgraded armoured plated exo-skeleton with a Gauss Rifle (Pack of dogs will still kill you :D)

i can breeze through any game (that i've played) on normal difficulty (hell i got the "do not die" achievement in bioshock) but the hardest campaigns ever would have to halo on legendary. alone. spending 2 hours to beat one level? good times, good times

I've always found Half-Life 2 quite difficult on normal, not really sure why.
My Dad got Half Life 2 back when it came out and, as I was quite a bit younger than I am now, I watched him play it as I was far too scared to do so myself. He played it on Normal, and always seemed to have a lot of trouble with it. Especially with Striders.

Then recently (i.e. the end of 2009) I got the Orange Box, and was very excited to play Half Life 2 for the first time after having seen it played so much. I stuck it on Easy, clinging to the same childish fear that I'd apparently carried over. It was, as the difficulty name suggests, very easy. I ramped it up to Normal (ooooh, hardcore :p) for my next playthrough... aaaaaaand I still did it with no trouble at all.

Maybe my Dad just isn't very good at it.

Funnily enough, I played it when it first came out after my dad had been playing for a while (he got stuck in Nova Prospekt with the turrets at one point) , and because it was hard for me then I think that's why I still play it on easy xD I'm struggling to remember if I have actually ever put it up to normal, because easy always seemed just right.

I also tried Bioshock on Easy before Normal, and completed it without dying. Except instead of turning it up the second time and finding it easy anyway, I turned it up and got the shit beaten out of me by every Big Daddy ever.

[sub]*sniff* I'm jus' after a lil ADAM, jus' enough ter get by![/sub]

Then the opposite problem with Bioshock 2... that was just downright weird...

uhh, serious sam advance, On the GBA, you can get about half way easly enough, but then you get so many tough enemys, with so little ammo for the only gun thats powerful enough to take them down in under 10 sconds. trust me, its hard.

Well I finished Crysis, so I guess it can't be that hard after all.

It's a very oddly designed game. I got used to the game and it was going great - all set to get a place in my top 5 FPSs, and then the second half of the game just turns to shit. From the moment you step out into the frozen landscape for the first time to the end of the game there's virtually nothing that resembles the first half of the game. It's incredibly linear and there's countless mission gimmicks including unbelievably awful vehicle sections and bafflingly unintuitive situations to get out of.

It still looks great, but being herded from one set piece to another is not my idea of a good FPS.

So, not nearly as hard as I first thought, but not as good either, disapointingly.

I thought Borderlands was pretty tough if you didn't grind to level up or go co-op.
Hi. Solo Borderlands player here!

Did it all, including Playthrough 2, with a Siren. No real grinding needed, either. Just do every quest as they pop up.

For me it was Just Cause 2

Mainly because I was rope swinging all over the place, trying to hook people to cars and then watch them get dragged away while I try to snipe it with a bazooka.

I've got to agree. Stalker is the only shooter I've ever had to put on easy. I usually play on hard to :/

i actually thought metro 2033 was pretty hard just cuz all the difficulties suck. either it's impossible to kill anyone or you die in 3 hits. pick your poison.

So what's the hardest single player FPS you've played, why was it so hard, and did you enjoy the extra challenge?
The hardest fps has got to be rainbowsix vegas 2, even on normal you die insanely fast

Yup, nailed it.

I played it on Recruit and still had a hard time doing well. It's a damned hard game.
