I'm not a fan of FPSs in general... I think some people irrationally hate Halo because some people irrationally love it so. I think TURN based SRPGs are fun in general, many people do not share this view. We all enjoy something that someone else find distasteful in some way.

Halo CE was decent on the PC, often boring, and the difficulty of superior levels downright absurd if you strated playing legendary. It's been elevated to the pantheon of games because it's pretty much the only thing good you had on the xbox in terms of FPS, and was pushed by Microsoft.

I think Halo 1 gave me the most enjoyable experience out of the three halos. I still go on the PC version sometimes to kick some ass, ride in the indestructible warthogs, and play on the classic blood gulch.

2 just didn't do it for me. I'm not sure why...but the gameplay in two just failed to impress me. The sword was a nice addition, but it got old with unlimited swings.

As for 3, I thought three was better than two. They tried to balance out guns that absolutely raped face in 2 and 1, but they still failed to deliver the amazing joy I get whenever I played halo 1.

I simply hate the massive market hype that came with it. And some of the vabid fanbase makes me angrier than I really ought to be. When you see the typical Halo fan call games like Mass Effect "Massively Overrated", I can't help but make mental stabbing motions at them. On the terms of gameplay alone, it did a sound job and put it to a fairly decent sci-fi story without being complete schlock. It's not without faults of course, but very few games are.

The only thing that bothers me about the game is the facination with the multiplayer. I can't keep track of the number of people that claim it's balanced and fair. Yes, balanced for he who holds the power weapons.

ok so halo is not the best FPS i've played but you really have to give it credit in multiplayer because it is by far simply the most addictive experience i've ever endured.eventhough I have to admit it does seem to be taken by drunk teens and 8 year olds its still fun because both drunks and 8 year olds are easy to beat :D .... but i have a major gripe about the singleplayer in halo 2 and 3 because they seem to lack what the orginal had which was suprises new encounters and those occasionly tense moments (library anyone)

I definitely hate the hype. I had fun playing it, it strikes me as pretty arcade-y. (Though I play UT3 and that isn't really any better) I don't think it has much of an evolved story, it's a pretty run of the mill sci-fi story. It's also pretty detached from anything humanistic, the character you play is a super being, roughly, and has a defense system that keeps him humming for the most part. He's too indestructable and the situation is pretty far flung, more or less conquering the halo by himself. I also prefer the mouse/keyboard.

While it's true halo wasn't the most innovative game, it had something that always does it for me. The gameplay was smooth (at least I found it to be), and my biggest problem with alot of games these days is getting killed, not because the enemies are good, but because I run headlong into bad or unresponsive gameplay.
Then again, I grew up playing marathon 2 on my friends mac, so I might also be suffering from nostalgia playing halo since it's a bit of a redux of marathon with a new story. (the story is based off the books by the by, for those who think the story is crap)

Honestly, and this has been said before, but I think a large part of the hate is as a response to the Halo fanboy as well as the hype. Basically, we are told these games are not just great, but neigh religious experiences. The hype for Halo 3 was insane, I honestly can't remember the last game (probably Halo 2, heh) that had that sort of general marketing push. Add that to the zealotry of alot of the fans. Take all of this and apply it to a game some people find either throughly mediocre, or genuinely bad, and you're basically being told this otherwise forgettable or bad game is the greatest thing ever. The response to that is predictable, really.

Honestly though, I am honestly sick of discussing this game. It would be as if entire religious wars were waged over some otherwise forgettable middling TV show, like Just The Ten of Us, or something (completely random example). As such, I am glad this is the last Halo game, glad that maybe sometime soon we can move on, glad we can stop getting this particular brand of hype, glad that perhaps, a year from now, we will not see another thread about Halo, glad that I may never have to think or devote effort to the fact of its existence ever again. Glad. Glad, Glad, Glad, Glad, Glad.

its not the last halo game, they already said so :) its just the last in this story arc (trilogy) halo wars is still coming up too (wich i will play purely for story)

anyhow, on to the main subjects here.

Gameplay wise, i love halo, im a fan of halo, but not a fanboy, i do know its faults and i recognize that its not the best fps or best anything (best marketing maybe..) but it just has me in its grasp, i LOVED the halo 1 singleplayer, and was hugely dissapointed with 2 3 and since those single player's just sucked balls, it lacked everything that made 1 an awesome single player experience, Multiplayer wise, yes, it might have improved, but i will always prefer halo 1, and i just cant accept people saying "repetetive enviroment in the space ship" as an argument, ITS IN AN ALIEN SPACE SHIP, you just told yourself why your argument is useless really, why would a military ship have a different look around every corner? I found the fact that they didnt change every other corridor good actually, at least it made you believe that i was a covenant ship, and not just a big stack of random corridors. Then theres backtracking.. i loved it, two betrayels is my favorite level, i do know that a lot of people hate the flood, and, if its only flood your fighting, it is boring, i agree, but the flood vs covenant vs you battles were just one of the best moments in my gaming years (wich is saying a lot for me) i do see that halo (all 3 games) is outclassed by lots of FPS games when it comes gameplay and such, but halo just feels right for me, well.. halo 2 feels terribly wrong, and 3 doesnt quite have it down either, but 1 is just great.

As for hype for Halo 3, it even pissed me off, i knew the game would by no means be this good, nor could understand why people did believe so. The ratings for this game are just all out lies and, its multiplayer might be good, ill still do a 16people Halo 1 LAN party with soem friends over it any day. Good thing in halo 3: maulers, thats all i say:)

as for people disliking the covenant.. this i really cant understand, the grunts gave you some comic relief (and their good at it) the elites are one of my all time favorites (see my dissapointment in 3 when you dont get to fight them... AT ALL) brutes suck, period, stupid enemies, big flaw of 3 for me. Jackals in 1 were anoying, in 2 and 3 they got snipers and rape your ass, in 2 it was doable, in 3 they just seem out of place. Hunters in 1 were joke.. i agree that this was stupid.. they corrected this in 3 though (in 2 they were still piss easy) but yea, the fact that the elites were made by this game already makes any crappy enemy up to me, even the flood, i just enjoy fighting those to much. My biggest problem with 2 is the fact that it has a rayman style endboss, seriously, wtf were they thinking, this game shouldnt have had a boss battle to begin with, it seems out of place. My biggest hate factor for 3... the last level, that, i agree, was just innovationless, they made an (almost) exact copy of the ending level of 1... (im talking about the end of the level..) a clone would be better i think, though.. this part can be fun with co-op if you go racing it.

but yea, 2 and 3 were both let downs, and 1 will always be the best, and the only one with a special place for me.

For anyone who says the story is mediocre/sucks, go read the books and get back to me after that, the halo books are in my top 10 favorite books (with things like Dante's Divine comedy, Ovidius Metamorphoses and other brain bashing litirature(spelling?) so thats saying a lot)

so point being made, i hate the hype, i love the first game, i understand the haters. :)

The first one kept the Xbox alive. The sequels were nothing more than shiny multi-player cash cows masquerading as a single-player experience.

I'll put it simply: Halo is easy.

That is why so many people love it, it's a simple game. The gameplay is easy to pick up, the guns are easy to use, the story is easy to follow, the campaign is easy, the AI is bordering on retarded, and the gameplay is devoid of anything resembling tactics. Your brain barely has to function to play Halo for the most part. Playing Halo reminds me of playing Quake and Unreal Tournament (except Halo admittedly has more depth than those two) because they are all fun, pretty easy to grasp and you can waste a lot of time on them without realizing it.

Half-Life has the campaign beat hands down, Rainbow Six could eat Halo's online play for breakfast, and even Call of Duty with it's infinitely-respawning-Nazi-buildings gives the player a more detailed environment to use when you turn up the difficulty level and are forced to think about your movements.

Sure, I loved Halo 1 and played it quite a bit including the campaign at various difficulty levels, vs. play against friends, and even a tournament or two in college but liking a game doesn't make it a great game when compared to it's compatriots.

According to quite a few of the drooling monkey FPS fanboys I've spoken with, they think Halo has the best storyline of any/most game ever. This is just more proof that they clearly haven't played anything else, so their opinion for quality should be taken with a grain of salt.

I actually got hold of a copy of Halo 1 for my pc after reading a thread on these boards. Figured I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. And maybe get to see this legendary Master Chief guy.

Admitedly I have not played all the game yet. But I'm having a bit of a problem, since the game doesn't really suck me in. I don't care much for the characters. But I'll keep trying and hope it changes. The story isn't told in a way that makes me care (yet).

My biggest grief, however, is with the baddies I've so far met. I actually find myself hating the grunts so much that I don't want to kill them as much as torture them forever in hell. They're completely offputting for me and makes my life sadder.
No, come to think of it, I hate all the monsters. Why the HELL are they colored like they were teletubbies? Come on, I want to shoot up nasty space aliens. Not purple guys. I don't get it.

So far I would say that Halo is a somewhat bland experience. It's ok, I guess, seen on its own merits, but far eclipsed by Half-Life (2) and Max Payne (I know its not a FPS, but it had a story I cared about, even if it was way over the top).

I like the idea about the whole Halo ring thing and its very pretty. Just a shame the game is somewhat mediocre.

(Edit)
I forgot FEAR. The story is so-so, but I loved the action and the melee. I can really practice my gung-ho style of running headlong into the fight and give it all I've got, damn the consequenses. I find that tactic somewhat problematic in Half-Life, however. :)

I like Halo, but it is overrated. It is a good first person shooter, but I simply don't understand the adulation it receives. There is nothing amazing, or groundbreaking about the franchise. It is a solid first person shooter with fun multiplayer. I don't understand the contempt some people hold it in either, but that may just be natural backlash to the hype. Whatever else may be said about Halo it must be admitted the marketing, and hype machines kick into high gear fro the franchise.

I truly enjoyed Halo as it was my first online multiplayer game but exposure to the types of people that actually play Halo online has at times made me consider becoming a hermit and truly wonder why some people breed, don't they know what they are going to produce from such a vile union?

As for the sequels, well, I'm not a retarded monkey so purchasing the same game that has just been polished with a wet rag twice more seems kind of stupid. Not to mention the fact it encourages the developers to be lazy and not create anything unique, but sell you mentally defective simians the same crap in a shinier package.

Call me biased, but as an average PC gamer my glimpses of Halo on the Xbox (and playings of it) have made me feel unsettled by its slow turn-speed and gameplay.

In retrospect: at the time of playing Halo I was a UT2004 muli-player junkie, thus even the limited weapon pickups, lack of jumping capabilities and fast-paced-map crossing buggered up my sense of decent gameplay.

I personally think a game should only be graded on how much fun it is.

Do you have fun while playing halo?
I do, I like Halo CE, I thought it was fun.
I thought the story was interesting. the enemys fun to shoot.
not the best game ever. not by a long shot. but for a shooter it does a good job.

Halo 1 was an impressive game. Not being a PC gamer, Halo exposed me to a less claustrophobic style of shooter. The story was basically an afterthought for me, it was really the environments that drove the epic feel of the game. I remember seing the opposite side of the halo in the sky and feeling really drawn in by that image.

As a franchise though, I think its pretty overrated, for too many reasons to go into on a post.

I'm kind of tired of arguing the point, but honestly, Halo isn't actually average. Well, Halo 1 isn't.

Bungie did a lot of great things with Halo 1, made a lot of great game design choices, and in the end made a really fun combat game that has an atmosphere that cannot be captured.

What went wrong with Halo 2 and 3 was all the people that complained about the first Halo for stupid reasons, and then Bungie got caught up in "Hmmm, how can we make a better video game?". That's why Halo 2 was a lot of corridor combat with little open spaces, and why Halo 3 feels as if there's too much emphasis on objectives that it takes away from the story (so many moments where a sudden big story point occurs and I never realized I was heading to one), as well as trying to shorten cut scenes and throw some dialogue into gameplay to keep players from having to "leave the game". In the end, that was horrible.

It's technically a classic tale. The first Halo is great because they made what they wanted to. The other games are flawed out the ass because they tried to make what everyone told them, and unfortunately the people that DO love it are the people that can't appreciate the good atmosphere and design decisions of the first game or the story direction of the second (no, Halo doesn't have the most amazing story, but God dammit I like it).

Even so, they are good games. Plus, they're also like Contra. Play them alone, and they're fun. Play them on co-op, and it's like "HOLY SHIT BEST THING EVAR!"

I like halo but at best its mediocre, it never developed anything ground breaking in really any way. Halo 2 did a good multilayer but again its nothing you can't/haven't been getting on the pc. As far as other fps I rather play I'd rather play any of the call of duty games, quake 3, unreal tournament. When a game sells a system (as halo was doing for the original xbox) the game should be fantastic, and in all honesty it isn't. I could now go on about the story but their really seems to be a lack their of... or at least lack of one I care about.... unreal tournament doesn't have a story either but they also don't have a in depth single player campaign, so I honestly don't think it can fail at something its not trying to succeed at. I was heard someone refer to halo's single player as bubble gum game play, it has a cretin sensation and feels good at first but as the game wears on you find yourself bored quickly (much like gum taste good at first but after awhile it loses it's taste).

All in all I don't find halo a really bad game but I don't think it should stand out above the games it does. I can't understand why some people defend halo as if it is the "Beez-Neez" but on the flip I can't understand why some people attack it as if it was a horrible title that should end up in the bargain bin. It never did anything exceptionally well but did everything ok.
