ok so I was reading a cracked article (as I do) and today (or tonights right now) topic about your musical taste and scienece!

http://www.cracked.com/article_20065_5-ways-your-taste-in-music-scientifically-programmed_p2.html

also of points here (some I disagree with)

main point here being that music reached its "peak" in the 60's...that there is less variety and more loudness in songs

[quote/][i/]"Hence, an old tune with slightly simpler chord progressions, new instrument sonorities that were in agreement with current tendencies, and recorded with modern techniques that allowed for increased loudness levels could be easily perceived as novel, fashionable and groundbreaking."
[/i][/quote]

so you know its offical that I have terrible fucking taste in music....

this pisses me off greatly..I've argued time and time againt those "people" who hang out in their little nostalga bubbles hating on whatever current trend in music is..but it turns out they are right....and it fucking depresses me.....becuase I cant stand classic rock, I fucking hate it

no really...anything from that period I absolutly can;t stand..I listen to it for a bit and I think "my god I feel like such a pretentious twat....and I KNOW somone out there would be listening to this and getting a great big *my music is better than yours* hard-on....uggghh" [footnote/] yes, Ive been drinking.....[/footnote]

so I supose what I'm essentially asing is what do you think? I mean ok if I step back and think about it for a second the article isnt exactly specified [i/]what[i/] kind of music is "worse" thease days aside from pop..and we all know pop is on the shallow end of the pool...the very VERY shallow end

Silly, everyone knows that music peaked in the 70s. ;)

Just because the music in the 60s was more experimental and diverse doesn't necessarily mean that all the songs were better (I would argue that most of them were, but like the article said, that's still just opinion).

Did you read the entire article?
Did you get the whole " your taste in music is pretty much set in stone by a certain age"-part?
Did you get the "and that's why arguing that some music is "worse" than another kind of music is pretty much pointless"-moral?

If not: Arguing over music is completely pointless because your taste in music is determined by certain factors which manage to connect a certain type of music with positive experiences, which your brain then uses in so far as that listening to this certain type of music again will yield a result in form of a chemical all-natural brain-high. Since everyone experiences differing situations with differing soundtracks, everyone will see different styles of music in a different light, because where some might get a sweet natural high, some might have connected the very same kind of music with a negative experience, thus reaction adversely to it.
And that is why arguing about music is as pointless as it gets.
[/serious mode]

Please excuse my probably incoherent rambling, but I have just finished a biochemistry-and-anatomy marathon and a warning light has just lit up in my brain, declaring that it's overheated and thus should not be used anymore for an extended period of time.

[stupid, probably unfunny stuff]
Also you are clearly wrong about the music you like, because my taste in music is the only correct one and you should be ashamed of yourself for not agreeing with me.

The article makes the mistake of assuming that a vast majority of the people listening to it listen to the kind of music that you hear on the radio, which I think we can all agree has gotten shittier, and is what the study focused on.

The thing is, thanks to the internet, we are no longer limited to listening to what's popular at the moment. I can listen to some obscure band that would never be able to get any time on the radio and I never would have heard of without the internet. So really, the 60s might have been the peak for variety in popular music (not necessarily quality, as there was plenty of shit that was popular during that era), but that doesn't matter anymore because we're no longer limited to listening to what's popular.

Also, the article was kind of poorly written, especially the last entry.

Well, my favorite Pink Floyd Albums (Wish You Were Here, Dark Side of the Moon, and The Wall) were from the 70s, no, I don't think the 60s were the best.

Music has never "peaked". It's constantly evolving and churning out different genres and sounds. So goes the march of humanity. So when someone says "Music was so much better in X time period", what they mean is "The music a personally like was around in this time period, but I'm going to be a pretentious twat and act like it's superior"

The article just stated that common chord progressions have been used over and over, and have just been updated and made louder. Which is for the most part true, as aanyone who picks up a guitar and knows a few simple chords can probably play about 1000 pop songs.

Also, in another Cracked article, they state that the nostalgia goggles in music are moot because bad music has always been at the top of the charts, it's just that the good music is usually remembered more.

I really don't think making a blanket statement of 'music has peaked at the X' fits music at all. Outside of there being many types of music and they've peaked at different times, like back in the 1800s for various types, so no, the 60s wasn't the peak of music. Maybe for simple guitar music and fun songs yes, but not as a whole.

I actually have two favorite eras. 60s and 90s.

Hendrix was the highlight of the 60s and damn is he awesome.

90s you had grunge of course and that was cool. Mostly Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, and while not grunge, Counting Crows.

Now in the 2000s you got lots of cool electronic music out there that's not Skrillex WUBWUBWUB.

Doesn't matter when the music is made if it is good music, as good music is timeless. That is why Mozart is still remembered down to this day while many others of his time are forgotten. Plus the people who say all music these days is rubbish are forgetting the trend that music that is popular at the time is not always the great music that gets remembered. While the in 60s the likes of The Beatles and Rolling Stones where both commercially successful and created good music, it is more the exception of the rule. For example in 60s Pink Floyd had rather mixed time success wise, it wasn't until the 70s they became a big band. Like wise The Velvet Underground now considered one of the most influential bands of the time, barely sold any albums.

Well Miss Vault, no offence, but I think you picked the least interesting part of the article to talk about, but anyway, sure whatever newer music is more samey, that doesn't necessarily mean it's worse, but anyway as the article said you like what you like, there isn't much point to arguing about "Which decade was better", and sure that will make those snobs more annoying but I can ignore them easily.

Given that that era and the others near it had such crappy bands as the Beatles and Elvis no music didn't peak back then. Fallout 3 taught me how bad the 50s were and enough commercials teach me about the other bad bands of the day.

60's? 70's? 80's? So on and so forth?

BAH I say! We all know that music peaked with Rush. Nothing shall ever surpass them.
