I think the game would be much more fun if it forced you along the sneaky path. For starters, take away all the guns. ALL. OF. THEM. Give you plenty of poison to apply to food / drinks, make it easier to know when someone is looking your way, etc.
No. One of the great things about Hitman is that your penalty for screwing up isn't a game over, it's just a messier assassination. If the game forced you to into silent assassin mode it would lose a lot of the charm.
I didn't really see much other than a game over in failure. If you're in the middle of a mass of guards who have just been told your position, then the only avenue available after being discovered was plowing through all of them with automatics, which made everything feel very screwy.
I'm not sure I entirely agree with you that silent assassin mode is not charming. I really liked Blood Money's newspaper screens that essentially summed up the mission with...
No one saw the assassin, and despite a swarming mass of guards in his mansion, only the media magnate and his son were killed. "It was like nothing happened." reported one of the partygoers, who declined to give her name. "Everything seemed normal, and then one of the bouncers took a microphone and said that...Something has happened, everyone needs to leave now."
Forcing the player along a path is tricky, and I wouldn't do it in all types of games, but when it makes for a much more rewarding and accomplished outcome, I would consider it.
