I did a quick search and didn't see any other posts about this so here it is: Peter Jackson will be Releasing 3 Hobbit films. Check out the post that just hit his facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/notes/peter-jackson/an-unexpected-journey/10151114596546558

"It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ?yes.'

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of ?The Hobbit? films, I?d like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling."

Cheers,

Peter J"

I for one am super excited about this. Having the chance to watch Peter Jackson and crew tell even more stories from Middle Earth is something I don't think I could ever get enough of.

Keep in mind he will be telling some parts of the story that were only hinted at in the book and were expanded upon in the appendices of Lord of the Rings. So it won't be 9 hours of Bilbo fighting spiders and riding barrels.

... How on earth can the shortest book out of the entire Middle Earth series also be the longest when translated to film?

Very little actually happens in the Hobbit compared to The Lord of the Rings.

Well I suppose if you really wanted to make a movie true to the book, it might take quite a few films to do so.
Now it'll be interesting to see if these films aren't long winded. It's one thing to read a book, it's another to watch all of it on screen.

at a very instant thought i went with oh great another cash grab. But like your thinking my brain hovered in the air and crashed down with the realization that holy crap i get three hobbit movies now and pulled out my team HELL YES shirt. i am an avid fan of The Lord of the Rings movies they made what i found to be rich literature that i couldn't read because of the way they were written into something awe inspiring. And from everything seen of the Hobbit so far Peter Jackson and the entire crew isn't just swinging for the fences again, They made full contact with the ball and hit it into the parking lot four blocks down the street.

$50 says that they split the last one into "The Hobbit: Part Three: Part One" and "The Hobbit: Part Three: Part Two".

I have no idea how there's enough content in The Hobbit to do this, but suppose it could work if each film is under two hours. I'm looking forward to it whatever.

They're just monetizing it, using the same system people are familiar with from the Lord of the Rings "trilogy". Most people that watch the movies aren't even familiar with the books. Most people that watch the movies don't even know there is a 'Hobbit' book, at all.

So naturally they'll assume it's just a "grand trilogy sequel trilogy" to the original trilogy.

Should have been one movie obviously, but I'll withhold my judgement.

*facepalm

It really is a blatant cash grab. As mentioned above, it is the shortest book of Tolkien's series.

So if I want to see the complete story, I will have to buy three tickets?

3? I'm only annoyed because I'll have to wait longer to see the conclusion. To be honest I thought it would've been fine as a Two-parter. I'm quite happy to wait and see how this turns out though.

Theres more than enough content in the Hobbit to last 3 2 hour movies. And I mean more than enough. They'll probably still end up leaving stuff out.
Then they should make two 3 hour movies. Rather than try grabbing more money off of us and dragging it on for an extra year. The LOTR films were that length, as are a whole lot of others.

According to this tweet [https://twitter.com/Variety_JLD/status/229963837456121857], the third film will arrive in Summer 2014. Its validity is questionable naturally, but I thought I'd share it.

Edit: Confirmed on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/notes/the-hobbit/peter-jacksons-long-awaited-filmed-adaptation-of-the-hobbit-to-be-a-trilogy/413954741973470

What. You could probably read the book in less time than it would take to watch a trilogy. Two movies, okay, there are quite few plot points to hit. But three?

I have a feeling that every conflict from the trolls stuffing dwarves in bags to the Five Armies is going to be stretched out into some absurdly epic thing.

I'm getting a Deathly Hallows vibe here.

Looks like this new trilogy will end up feeling stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.

While I would have been delighted with just the two films, there is more than enough content in the Hobbit plus the Appendices to put them into three.

Overall, I'm going to withhold judgement on how good these films will be until I at least watch the first one.
