im supet excited over this.
Yes, movies about events exclusively in the hobbit could be done in two films, maybe even one really really long one

But from everything ive read theyre also going to be including things from the appendices and stuff like the rise and subsequent chase of the necromancer from mirkwood.
I think a necromancer storyline alone could make a really good movie

I'm getting a Deathly Hallows vibe here.

Looks like this new trilogy will end up feeling stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.

OT: Never read the book, just as I hadn't read the LOTR trilogy. I feel safe trusting Peter Jackson on this!

... How on earth can the shortest book out of the entire Middle Earth series also be the longest when translated to film?

Very little actually happens in the Hobbit compared to The Lord of the Rings.
Well hopefully that means that we'll see all the tiny details. Condensing one big book in one film means scrapping a lot of stuff.

I'm slightly skeptical about whether they've really got enough source material to make three full films- I feel that they could probably have done The Hobbit justice with two. But at the same time, I love Peter Jackson as a director and I think we can trust him to have made the right call here.

Of course, with some stuff inspired by the Appendices - the Necromancer section, for example, they'll have enough. I'm just not sure whether it was necessary to dip into that when the Hobbit stands by itself as a brilliant story.

Definitely a cash grab. There is more than enough time in two 3 hour movies to cover everything in such a small book. Now they're just adding things in there. The Battle of Dol Guldur? The one that was mentioned in the book but never seen? Now it's such a critical part of this trilogy of movies? Seriously, Peter...?

See all i can see them doing that isn't in the books in great detail is an epic battle of 5 armies. Some backstory or stuff into the elves in mirkwood. large segement on Saurumans fall from the good side (which i believe starts at around this time) The discovary that the necromancer is
Sauron
And his retreat. Maybe some stuff to do wiht the wizards council.

...seriously? A book shorter than any of the LOTR books becomes three times as long in film? They're just milking it because there's no more films to make after this. Splitting LOTR into more films would have made sense; this does not.

Well I'm looking forward to it. I like Lord of the Rings, but The Hobbit as a book, is far, far better. Maybe this will be too. I'm eager to see how The Battle of Five Armies will look like. I'm sure we'll get to see it much more in-depth in film form, which is probably going to be the highlight for me.
