For those of you that never saw this (which in my mind would be a very few) In December Peter Jackson will be releasing "The Hobbit" Part 1..

Now, there are alot of similarities as well as a whole boatload of differences between it and the Lord of the Rings, including a lack of pretty-face elf who is a huge character in the series...instead you get an army of 13 dwarves with a single hobbit running around with an old gray wizard.

My question is a two parter, mostly because I'm curious...

1) Have you read "The Hobbit"?

2) Whether or not you have read the book, what are your feelings when seeing this trailer?

Personally? I've read the book. It still remains as one of my favorite novels. It's simple, it's adventurous, and it has a bloody dragon at the end. And it doesn't have the excessive amount of detail the Lord of the Rings had...

My feelings on the movie was estatic. I really enjoyed the book and really enjoyed seeing this trailer. I want to see it early, but know fully well I can't. Only major complaint is the actor that plays Thorin Oakenshield is a bit younger than his character (as Thorin was the oldest). But I digress...

Unlike Lord of the Rings, which had to cut a good portion out (Bye bye Tom Bombadil ;.;), they left the majority of the cast, even adding a few names to the list. A Theory came up that suggested they're combining the original Hobbit with one of the unnamed stories that Tolken left behind, that told us about how Gandalf chose Bilbo to go on an adventure. Because of this, you'll be seeing old, and new faces, maybe even Legolas, though that's not 100% yet.

Loved both the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings as a child (the hobbit being my favourite out of the two), but did kinda grown out of them, and I really didn't enjoy the LOTR films (best bits cut in my mind)

The trailer looks good, and some of my fav actors are playing the dwarves, I'll end up seeing it.

No never read the Hobbit though I did read The Fellowship of the Ring and hated every second of it. Though I did love the movies and am really looking forward to the Hobbit film.

Funny, it's the only Tolken book I ever read, for some reason I just couldn't get into LotR. Movie looks fine in my opinion.

1) Yeah, though it was quite some time ago.

2) It made me wish that december is next month. At first I didn't really like how the dwarfs looked, but the more I watched the more they grew on me and now I like them. Also DAT SONG!

1) Yes, but it was a long time ago and all I can really remember is that I liked it at the time. I need to re-read it.

2) I don't know. It looks alright. I don't trust trailers so I'll be waiting to see what sort of reviews it gets before I go see it. It doesn't seem like they've butchered it. I'm sure it will be mediocre at worst with the potential to be quite good.

I read it at school, it was probably one of the most important books of my life and pretty much got me into the whole fantasy genre, without which I'd not be where I am today.

The trailer makes me smile, I think it'll be good.

The trailer showed me two things:

A) Peter Jackson *may* have understood that The Hobbit is tonally different from LotR.

B) Peter Jackson is still unable to resist shoehorning extraneous crap into his movies.

Oh yes, I have read The Hobbit. I read it for the first time when I was in about fourth grade and I loved it. I've read it several times since. I also saw the old cartoon movie from back in the day several times, liking it as well because it put some of Tolkien's songs and poems in the book into better context(hearing them sung by the group of travelers). I look forward to seeing what the adventures of the burglar and the dwarves looks like in this iteration, as well as the multiple army battle at the end(please don't change that, guys, it's the best part of the book. That and Smaug's conversation with Bilbo)

I read it years and years ago, and all I remember was Bilbo meeting Gollum, trolls, and the dragon. I plan on re-reading it before the movie comes out -- can't wait!

Have I read the book? Of course, who hasn't?

What do I think of the trailer and/or prospects of the movie? I have LOW expectations. After all, it's being made by Jackson who completely fucked up the LotR movies.

I find it ironic that Jackson consciously decided to remove all references of lore from LotR, other than the Ring and Aragorn, while they're adding foreshadowing references to LotR to the Hobbit which wasn't in the book.

Also, if the Hobbit is going to be 2 movies, they should have made LotR into 5 movies. The first 4 books could have stood by themselves as individual movies, while the last 2 didn't have so much action.

Wow, Smaug's conversation with Bilbo was the first thing I remembered from the animated movie. That and, for some reason,

Bilbo drawing Sting against the spiders.

On a side note, it looks like the entirety of the animated film is up on youtube. Huh.

I read it when I was like, 11 years old. I enjoyed The Hobbit, it's one of the only "fantasy" stories that I actually liked. Lord of the Rings was terrible, and all I remember from it was skipping pages and forgetting who people were with all those dumb-sounding names. But The Hobbit was short and simple and more lighthearted. I'm interested to see how the movie turns out.

Actually just finished it today for the first time. Great book.
And the trailer did excite me. Of course, as in most instances. The book will most likely be better then the movie.

1) Have you read "The Hobbit"?
yes
2) Whether or not you have read the book, what are your feelings when seeing this trailer?
I'm stuck with martin looking like Dr. John Watson from Sherlock in my mind so it all seems a little odd at the moment. And the whole feeling of the dwarves also feels strange and out of place. But I feel it'll still be as awesome as LoTR was.
