I read the hobbit, and liked it. I do resent it somewhat for luring me into reading the lord of the rings trilogy, which I found just dreadful to read, but the book is quite good on its own.

As for the trailer, it looks good to me. Jackson did a very good job with the lord of the rings movies (one of the few movie adaptations that I thought improved on the original), after all.

No, I actually haven't read it. I only read the first LotR long time ago and didn't want to read more, but people say Hobbit is actually good so I'll probably read it. Hell, I have time, the movie won't come out for a fucking year.

As for the trailer, I'm going to channel my Sherlock obsessed sister, ahem: "Martin Freeman!! Squeeeeee!!!!"

I read the Hobbit back in High School when I was taking standardized tests. I'd finish the tests so early that reading was the best thing to do, since I couldn't just get up and leave. :(

As for the trailer... it's ok. I was a bit confused by it, to be honest. But.... it's a film by Peter Jackson set in Middle Earth. I'd say that's a good sign that this film will at least be decent.

The whole family can't wait! We read LOTR and The Hobbit. I did not read Children of Hurin, Unfinished Tales or the Similarion though.

No, as it had the same issue I had with reading LOTR good idea of a story but god if I could make myself read it. I will see the movie though as it seems like it could be fun.

Plus reading the book can ruin the movie when the movie changes some facts or characters. This annoyed me with V for vendetta and Watchmen.

I read the hobbit in primary school and its one of my favorite books to this day. I also enjoyed the movie, I'm not sure if I saw it before or after the book.

1 yes but about 30 years ago now...

2 not sure, i have faith the IP will be handled well and with reverence by MR Jackson and im looking forward to it immensely but i am curious how they are going to play it, the hobbit was after all a childrens book makes me wonder how he will go.

Lotr books are just too hard to read for todays audience the vocabulary of the average person simply isnt up to it.

1. Yes
2. I think the trailer looks cool. Movies are not books and vice versa, so I never expect a movie to follow precisely along with a book. I enjoyed the LotR movies. I suspect I'll enjoy The Hobbit when it hits theaters.

1. Yes, I have read the Hobbit. Have never read the rest of the Lord of the Ring stuff though. I was not a fan of his writing style.

2. I'm excited for the movie though. I did love the Lord of the Rings movies, and found them a lot easier to take than I probably would've found the books. Plus, I know, and love, a lot of the actors in the movie, so, excited.

I read it when I was in fourth grade, then I watched the movies, then read all the LotR books. I loved all of them to an absurd degree. After having read some literary criticism of the books I really grew to appreciate just how much stuff was packed into that world. I remember dreaming up my own adventures in Middle Earth as a kid and I really don't think there is a single book I have read that has impacted me as much as that series. I do get why people have such a hard time reading the books though, Tolkien may have wanted to make his books somewhat readable, but the closer you get to a truly epic scope, the older and more complex his style becomes. It can really be a chore to read.

I am really excited for this movie. I hope it doesn't disappoint.

I read the Hobbit and LOTR about twice each, once when I was younger and once just before the Fellowship of the Ring was released theatrically.

and... I don't like them.

It's the dialogue.

I cannot stand the way Tolkien writes dialogue.

I have been taken to task for my opinion on this literally hundreds of times - I am both a nerd AND a fantasy nerd, loving Tolkien should really go with the territory, or so I am told.

I am fully aware of Tolkien's impact on Western fantasy, in that I fully respect that Tolkien essentially invented it. I know that everything we accept about dwarves, elves, wizards, dragons, all of that in almost all forms of western literature, movies, video games, RPGs, all of it comes from Tolkien. I have a great deal of respect for this, for the influence of his work.

I like his descriptions and I love how complete his world is. Everything has a thousand years of palpable history and I appreciate it a great deal.

I don't like how Gandalf is used as a Deus Ex Machina, I don't like his insistence on including so many utterly useless extraneous characters (Pippin and Merry, for example, basically don't need to exist) I don't like how morality is absolute by species (all Elves are good, all Orcs are evil and that's kinda bullshit and - while it was assuredly not Tolkien's intention - is pretty fucking racist) but mostly, it is the dialogue.

His characters stiffly spout convoluted gluts of awkwardly high-toned prose and absolutely nobody talks like a real person at any time.

At any time.

What is worse is that because his impact and influence on fantasy has been so very very pervasive, hundreds of lesser fantasy authors trying to ape Tolkien's style all did that shit, too, forcing their characters to vomit out these nonsensically Shakespearean lines.

I hate it. It detracts severely from the characters and the situations, it makes me lose focus and stop caring about them. The dialogue rings so very false to me and as a result there is, for me, a constant disconnect, a second layer of suspension of disbelief on top of the one I'm already dealing with, what with all the monsters and magic and whatnot.

As a result, getting through all three LOTR books and even the movies was a sometimes almost painful slog.

Having said that, I will likely see this movie anyway.

Peter Jackson is very good at action and scope, I like the way he sets up his scenes and I like how he does not solve all his problems with MOAR CGI like dozens of other directors.

And it's been years since I've seen a decent movie featuring a huge Dragon, and I must admit i'm intrigued to see how he handles Smaug.

Love the book. It was one of my favorite things to read curled by a fire as a kid.

I'm really looking forward to this movie, especially because it looks like they're keeping the songs. The songs and the way they were integrated into the story were one of my favorite things about the Hobbit and it wouldn't feel the same without them.

The Hobbit is really different to LotR. I've never even bothered reading Fellowship, but The Hobbit is a great book.

I read the Hobbit years ago and am happy Peter Jackson is back at the helm.

Something I do find amusing (which BBC Sherlock fans might appreciate) is that Martin Freeman (Dr Watson) is the Hobbit and the voice of Smaug is Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes).

I am definitely going to enjoy the Hobbit, and I will not be surprised if it becomes the Movie of the Year.

This is actually the first time I've watched the trailer. I thought it unfair to comment on it without having seen it. After viewing it -- Pete Jackson is doing to the Hobbit what he did to LotR -- destroying it. The man is a fraud and a hack. Tolkien would never have allowed those movies to screen, and this one will be no different. He has this perfect knack to hit every note wrong -- some so off key that the entire work is demolished by these few, and made worse by the dissonance all the rest follow up with.

I'll probably see it at some point, on DVD at least. But I am expecting it to be awful and from the two minutes I just spent before this -- those expectations appear to be totally justified.

Oh, and yes, I've read the Hobbit a number of times. As well as Lord of the Rings.

1) Not all the way through, but I started. I have played the game though, and it seemed to keep pretty true to the book.

2) It looks good, and I'll probably go see it.

You fail at literature if you haven't read it at least once, it's one of the best books ever written. It's a popular choice with teachers for class reading assignments, so I would reckon most people have read it whether they wanted to or not.
It's a shame my school didn't though... we need novels that have deep meanings about human nature, or racist or stuff like that because the SQA ask 'Write a book about a novel which uses fucking everything as a metaphor for human nature, and the contrast of it.'

really? i guess that would explaian why Sherlock season 3 isnt going to be back until 2013. then again, The Hobbit is a fair trade.

The Hobbit is probably my favorite book of all time. One of the few I have read more than once. 5 times to be exact.

Also, there is one kickass graphic novel version of it that you can get, and I recommend it to anyone. It is perfect.

I don't think I know what going on but I assume you mean "hobbits" as in the third type of human believed to have coexisted with modern humans along side Neanderthals. There is a bit of controversy still sounding the discovery. If you mean elves, wizards and shit then fuck, I don't know what the hell is going on. Orks too. What the fuck are those things and why do nerds like them so much? Apparently there is a whole video game dedicated to the things now.

I have read it and didn't really enjoy it. I much preferred Lord of the Rings. I'll still probably see the film but I am struggling to remember anything eventful that happens in the book (Bar maybes the trolls and Gollum. I am not counting the dragon as the big climax fight with Smaug is bullshit) that will give the film a good pace, let alone justification to make it into two films!
