The idea could have been great for a film, but its the usual bullshit marketed at the teen Twilight crowd. Fighting for food is a great idea, the poor and starving being forced into violence to survive, i love that. But everyone looks to fit and healthy in the movie....why aren't that thin and bones? If its a once a year contest then no one is starving for food. Also if your killing off loads of your kids then your destroying your future. They can grow food, stick the kids working in farms etc

The concept is great, the idea is brilliant but its so half arsed with zero thought behind it. I don't want to bring in Battleroyale, but atleast that film ran with its ideas instead of stifling it.

I know this book/movie wasn't meant for me, but i think that its such an interesting premise for a story that i hope a more adult version will be written and filmed one day. Maybe a Battle Royale crossed with Soylent Green. :)

Frankly, it was terrible, putting aside the bad camera, the generic settings, and how they never even touched on the capital being anything other than some camp city somewhere, it was still terrible. It did nothing to characterize anyone, that's the main problem, it expects us to sympathize with a manniquin, not with people. It gives no one any characterization, and what little it gives to Katniss made me want her to die, because then either Pita or Kato could win. With the book's first-person perspective, it paints a picture of innocent children being slaughtered for entertainment, and Katniss as a guilt-ridden victim. But the movie just shows her actions, and they make her out to be a manipulative, self-centered *****, by time they got into the arena, I wanted her to die, and by the end I wanted Kato to win over her, because his final lines took him from one-dimensional bad guy, who we were supposed to hate simply because he tried to kill her, to everything the original Katniss was, the Katniss I wanted to win.

It's a horrible knock off of an actually good book movie, Battle Royal. Watch Movie Bob's review for my full opinion.
Except Battle Royale isn't actually that good. I mean, I still like the concept but as a serious attempt at making a believable near future and characters I think it fails.

Your post's lack of punctuation is the only thing that makes me cry is your lack of punctuation.
Slightly ironic sentence. ;)

OT: Interesting to read people's views. I keep thinking I should try and see this film at some point. I'm a little disappointed that they seem to have jumped on the shaky-cam bandwagon, but I'll watch it with expectations set appropriately.

Stupid bullshit movie with one-dimensional villains and obvious love interests/sacrifices. Lame twists, tame exploration of the setting and philosophy, bad camera work. (yes, I did read the posts above me. It's like saying the controls on a game are supposed to be clunky and awkward because you're a normal human as opposed to a superhero.) A very potentially interesting concept with a poor, hollywood-filtered execution.
Agreed. It's like Battle Royale but for teen girls. Their idea of "action" was waving the camera around like it's tied to someone having a seizure and considering it's a movie about people being sent to their death, there is virtually no actual violence in it. That and it was continually predictable. It just felt generally awful.

1) I don't think it fails at all, it's a masterpiece
2) If BR fails, the THG fail much harder. The future setting pretty much makes no sense and is founded on little to no logic.
