I actually am watching anime and enjoying it...

My group of friends who are massive fans of anime/mange lent me some manga to read and I suprisingly enjoy it, I then started watching some of the anime and other stuff. I've been watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, Lucky Star and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and I'm really having a blast.

They have some suggested some themselves to watch like Angel Beats, Code Geass and Death Note and I personally have a real urge to watch Gundam Wing.

So i'm wondering what recommendations any of you could give? I don't really have preferences really at the moment so i'l try most things.
I'd say skip Angel Beats I hated that show. Personally i'd suggest

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
I mean it's the count of Monte Cristo in anime form, what more do you need

Planetes:
A great series especially if you're into space. Great characters, plays kind of like a slice of life series in space at the beginning but gets a plot later on. A great underrated series.

Baccano:
Imagine if tarantino did an anime. Just watch the opening below. A whole lot of FUN!

those are my three recommendations

The only anime I ever Watched was Full Metal Alchemist (the shorter, English version; Don't know if that counts). I REALLY liked the story and the message. It wasn't just mindless action bullshit. It...really....said something. And what it said, blew me away at the time.

(To clarify, I'm NOT calling other Anime's mindless action or that that is my opinion of them; I'm just saying that broadly.)

Detective Conan is enjoyable. Though the official English translation of the manga is called Case Closed for copyright-related and barbarian-based reasons.

Fruits Basket. It's a charming, light-hearted anime that deals with the power of kindness and friendship. Given that it's meant for teenage girls, I went in in thinking I wouldn't like it (I'm a guy in my twenties). Turns out it really grew on me the more I watched it, and now it's my favorite anime. Yes it's kind of dumb and corny at times, but it has its share of emotional drama as well.

Unfortunately the show kind of ends on a cliffhanger, as the manga it was based on wasn't finished yet. There were plans to make a second season, but it fell through for various reasons. The good thing is that the manga is well worth checking out as well.

Also, Studio Ghibli's works are definitely worth checking out. My favorites are Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso and Kiki's Delivery Service.

Dunno if someone has already said this, but just to make a few corrections.

1. The Fruits Basket Manga was finished. The anime only used about a quarter of the manga in total.

2. There was never any plans for a second season. A lot of people wanted it - a lot of people signed petitions to get it - but they said they had no plans to actually continue it.

I'm guessing you're one of the people who watched the popular ones then assumed they're all crap.

I'd recommend Gundam 00 over Wing. 00 is kinda like a new Wing. Even I, someone who grew up on it mostly really enjoy it out of nostalgia. Besides the second half is a bit slow. But Wing is still certainly worth watching. Don't forget to watch the Endless Waltz movie after that.

I can add to the recommenedation of Death Note and Code Geass. Death Note I can get anyone to watch, and I imagine Code Geass is a good gateway from that because it's like Death Note with more anime cliches.
I wasn't a big fan of 00 personally. The characters all felt bland and lifeless in my opinion. Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny are good though.

Cowboy Bebop, it's been described as "the anime for people who don't really like anime". It's quite Western.

Cowboy bebop is really awesome I'd reccomend that with BoozeZombie

Let's see yeah Gundamn wing IS great but they tend to reuse old animation sequences and about half way through volume one you WIll notice it... I still love the giant robots but hey choice is yours

ANOTHER great giant mch one would be the Full Metal Panic Series. it's got a lot of the giant mech battling of Gundamn Wing paired with having Mr super serious soldier going to a japanese high school to protect a special kind of target... with various misunderstandings hilarity ensuses including him walking into the girls change room look for a bug the employment of military hardware on everyday items. and if you develop a fondness for the inbetween school sceens they did a season 1.5 that was focused entirely on building the relationship between the two main characters.

I'f you want cartoons I'd Also reccomend Boondocks and Avatar the Last airbender. they bother sorta have the anime look but well it's western

When you said "something impossible has happened", I was kind of hoping for this:

Or something similar - but perhaps I was just daydreaming.

You made a good start with NGE and Haruhi imo. It's tradition for me to recommend Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic, GANTZ, Ghost In The Shell (can really start it anywhere, as long as you try to keep Stand Alone Complex and SAC: 2nd Gig in order), Samurai Champloo, Last Exile, Basilisk, High School Of The Dead and the first 64 episodes of Bleach.

If you like the drama aspects of NGE and Haruhi, I alos reccomend Serial Experiments: LAIN, Jin/Roh, Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal as well as Reflections (and to a lesser extent the looong series based off those movies, Ruroni Kenshin), Ergo Proxy, Elfen Lied, Trinity Blood and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and the Hellsing Ultimate, Gungrave, Death Note, and Wolf's Rain.

For giggles, FLCL, Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu, Trigun, .Hack//SIGN, and Excel Saga.

Glorious! Also be aware that there's an alternate ending called End of Evangelion which is supposed to go in place of the last two episodes and just so happens to be my favourite film of all time.

Code Geass is awesome, Death Note sucks. They both have the same main character pretty much except Death Note's Light doesn't have the relatability, personality, inner conflict or character arc.

You should also watch Cowboy Bebop. It's basically 40's and 50's Jazz if 40's and 50's Jazz was space pirate bounty hunters in a film noir setting. It also happens to have my second favourite action scene of all time (The first being in the aforementioned EoE). Serial Experiments Lain is very similar to Eva - to the point that people assumed that it borrowed themes and ideas from Eva (This isn't actually true, though).

I liked the characters. I actually didn't like Seed because although the premise was good, very little plot seemed to actually happen in the 28 episodes I watched. The battles all used the same shots, and Destiny is hated by many for using the same shots from the first series.

Light was the first anime character I related to. I'm weird though, because after all 99% of Death Note fans are L fangirls.
