We aren't starting for a bit yet. I'm waiting on some sheets, and to be honest several of these sheets aren't up to scratch. Specifically this one,

Name: Reintur Nabin
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Skills: Assassination & Sabotage
Equipment: Ballistic Knife, Sniper Rifle, Dual Pistols.
Appearance: Wears dark leather gloves, a military watch, Military Issue Pants, Military Issue Jacket with Military Issue Armor. (Hispanic) 4"11 with special goggles and Deep Black hair aswell as a dirty blonde goatee.
History: Reintur used to work for a car repairing business in his street before the news of the Terran fleet arrived. As his friends joined the force he decided to put his engineering skills to work to the max. Not much else is known about his life, no records of his family are known either.
this one

Name: Roman Longard
Age: 41
Gender: Male
Species: Modified human
Skills: Infiltration and marksmanship
Equipment: Combat knife, pistol, sniper rifle, various serveilance items and light armour
Appearance: Roman has thinning grey hair and a scraggly goatee. He is about 5ft 10" tall and has a slim build. He has dark brown eyes and a faint scar on his left collar-bone.
History: Roman fought as a foot soldier in the First Tau Ceti war, alongside his brother Travis. However, he was quickly moved into a sniper unit after it became apparent he was wasted on the front line. At least, thats what he tells people, although his transfer was in no small part due to his ability to sweet talk his Colonol (and the Colonol's wife) into moving him. His skill as a sharp-shooter was neither here nor there. His brother also volunteered for a special operations unit that was apparently being planned.
When the papers came through, Roman found he'd been accepted, but Travis hadn't. He took the place anyway.
Two weeks after the transfer Roman heard that the entirety of his old squad had been killed in a desperate rear-guard action on an inconsequential backwater moon somewhere. It broke his heart and he can't escape the feeling he should have joined them. Roman volunteered for the team out of a sense of duty to his brother, hoping that by fulfilling Travis' dream, he can finally forgive himself.

Roman has incredible people skills, greatly assissted by the cybernetically enhanced eyes he talked himself into. These not only help him when aiming down a scope, but also in noticing every tiny detail in a person's face: The twitch of an eyebrow, the dilating of the pupil. It all helps him to read people better, and therefor manipulate them.
this one

Name: Alan Striker
Age: 37
Gender: Male
Species: Modified Human
Skills: Espionage, assassination, sabotage.
Equipment: Wrist blades, two pistols, a sub machine gun. Combat vest Multiple cybernetic implants, enabling night vision, enchanted strength, thermal vision, greater accuracy, and the ability to temporarily cloak for a few minutes.
Appearance: Stands rather tall at six feet. Has dirty black hair that he does not bother to clean and a carefully shaven face. Noticeable cybernetic implants around his eyes. Mechanical arms.
History: Alan was a farmer before the First Tau Ceti war, when conflict broke out he assumed that the colony would fall within a month, and in reality couldn't care less. One day he returned home to find that his barn had been bombed by the Terrans, they has suspected that it was a weapons cache. Furious at the death of his wife and son, Alan volunteered for an experimental project codenamed Stalker. He was given countless cybernetics and forced through brutal training. After he graduated, he was commonly deployed behind enemy lines to assassinate enemy leaders and destroy depots of all kinds, usually before a major offensive. His cybernetics allowed him to fire his weapons accurately with only one hand, so he prefers to wield an SMG and a pistol at the same time. When he learned that the Terrans would be returning again, he volunteered again for the strike team and due to his impressive record, was immediately accepted. He is ready to kill as many Terrans as it takes, partially to protect his home, partially to feed his need for revenge. His has been noted as quiet and isolated, shunning away any Human contact, especially female.
and this one

Name: Thibaut Tristan (Alias, actual name is Cade Meier)
Age: 31
Gender: Male
Species: Modified human (very slightly)
Skills: Highly skilled with pistols, knives, fists, and sniper rifles. Lockpicking, basic hacking, and can pilot impressively well for somebody not dedicated to the craft. intermediate gun-mechanic, and knows many different spoken languages. competent in assault and sub assault weaponry.
Equipment: tan slacks and a long sleeved black shirt under a black button up shirt, all very well-looking. Has a shouldermounted holster eight shot per mag coil pistol, fires a .22 calibre slug. Carries two butterfly knives, disguised as decorative braces on his pants. A hard polymer lockpicking set spread around his sleeves and shirt. Mods give him improved senses and perfect lying. Can perfectly imitate any accent.
Appearance:He wears nice looking clothes, plain black military boots. He's roughly 5'7, blue eyes and blond hair. dirty tan. He's lanky, but handsome. Perceptive observers would notice he takes a defensible stance when he walks and stands, from Terran Special Forces, at least at some point. It looks mixed with other things. his hair is crew cut dirty blond. Has a plain watch on one wrist, and a cheap, extremely worn dragon necklace on his chest prominently. When asked, he just smiles and mutters "gift from a friend"
History: Cade was born in North American Earth, and in the slums. Joined the military at 17, and made Sgt. in the Special forces by 25. Resigned at 27, where he then fell completely off the grid. Years later, Thibaut emerged years later as a Cetian conman in the underground, and eventually an informer for the authorities. He was recruited into the teams for his knowledge of Terran tactics and structure, and for his general disgruntled feelings about their governance.
Also, as regarding the Kaceos, that's a pretty good image of them, but they have eight limbs - four legs, a set of claws, and then hands. They're required to become an advanced civilization. Some Kaceos have claws with fingers, but it's an extremely rare trait, like having six fingers on a human.

I even ask people to tell me what to change (I have a tendency to get really into sheets and lose perspective) but just saying "It's not good enough" doesn't help me fix it, man. Tell me what's wrong, what you want retconned and I'll do it.

The problem is that the characters are -boring-. They're the same tired cliches I've seen trod over a million times. Plus the backstories are positively fucking skeletal, it's like their entire life has been 'born. entered army. was badass. got recruited. fin'

...so you're saying that you want me to rewrite my character? Because frankly I like my guy, I was looking forward to using him.

Freeform RPs don't have to be original. They just have to entertain. The DM is sucessful if the players are entertained.

Everyone loves being the badass assassin, and it makes sense in context. I think you should leave it. Ultimately, I can't change what you do.

How about someone be one of those wasp-guys? So we don't have a whole team of cyborgs with 1 alien.

I'll extend his history, but I thought a Terran to introduce paranoia and distrust dynamics in the team would spice things up a little. alrighty then, I'll make more history, and if you really find him so boring, then let me know what cliches you're talking about. I'll fix them

...and I HAVE a story to tell. My guy is mentally unstable, partially killing for his own pleasure, he shuns himself from others as he has become emotionally jaded, but despite that he has a guilt complex about what happened to his family. You might not have caught this, but at the end of his history, I mentioned that he especially avoided female contact, this is because he feels that he messed up with his wife and doesn't deserve to love again. I didn't know that all of that had to go into the sheet, I thought that I would get a chance to explore his character once we started and during the game, I didn't know I was supposed to present in all up front.

Sorry, all I saw was 'Guy's wife and kid got killed, and now he's out for revenge! He wants answers, and he's letting his gun do the talking, and his gun only knows one very loud word!' Which is a character only slightly older than the concept of storytelling.

Ok then :) I was planning on him developing much better throughout the story, starting him off with insulting his teammates every step of the way, even when they don't deserve it, and he has to seriously lighten up...maybe learn to forgive himself and to love again.

Characters are defined by their actions. The backstory is less important than the actions they take during the course of the game.

Name: Terry "Ol' Scratch" Kobek.
Age: 51
Gender: Male
Species: Modified Human
Skills: *Fought in the last war, well-learned in Terran combat tactics.
*Good judge of character
*Charming, good manipulator
*At least dabbling level of skill in all forms of modern weaponry
*Willing to cooperate with anyone, regardless of personal opinion
Equipment: *Circa-2348 Pulse rifle, custom-built by Ockland Armaments. Equipped with adjustable auto-targeting sights, compatibility with retro-tech ballistic ammunition, stock-installed mufflers for minimum kickback, and a foldout launching bayonet under the barrel.
*Standard issue Cetian Officer's Sidearm, heavily modified. Metal sections now layered in brass, entire replacement of the grip to naturally contour to the hand, minor barrel adjustments to fire armor-piercing slugs in place of normal pulse shots, laser pointer underneath the barrel, a rechargeable battery capable of firing paralyzing tazer shots, and a DNA-scan panel located on the trigger, only responsive to Terry or those with 99.99% similarity to his precise genetic data.
Appearance: Due to his genetic modification, he appears to be far younger than he truly is, physically in his prime at what would be age 30 for most humans. Light skinned, his skin has a host of little flecks and scars from wounds, most of them rendered nearly invisible through cosmetic surgery. His hair is a dark brown, nearly black, tiny slivers of gray nearly unnoticeable within his dissheveled hair. Sideburns down slightly below his ear and an average mustache across his lip are the only facial hair he keeps, the rest of his face being clean-shaven. His lips are average, if consistently a bit dry. His nose is prominent, though not large, with average nostrils and an unbent bridge. His eyes are wide open at all times and a sharp icy-blue color, accented by naturally arched eyebrows.

His 5'11" body is strong and muscular, even slightly toned, a feat amazing for his age. He wears a long-sleeved, collared navy shirt with a pair of khaki pants, tan shoulder straps included, with black combat boots and wrist-length black gloves at nearly all hours of the day, only strapping on what he considers to be vestigial combat armor when the fighting is guaranteed to be intense to the point of dodging bullets being an impossibility.

History: Born to a Cetian family 51 years ago, Terry was destined to be a soldier in the eyes of his parents, molded to be physically perfect for the battlefield. However, as he grew and began to see the world for himself, Terry realized that he wanted absolutely nothing to do with fighting. He took up botany instead, carving out a piece of farmland for himself with the aid of his always-proud but nonetheless disappointed parents. By the age of 20 he had managed to build up a decent life for himself, marrying a beautiful young woman by the name of Elysia from a nearby town, the daughter of a colonel in the military. He spent his spare time away from the farm at the local university, where he was renowned for both his extreme athletic capability and his cunning. He became well known for his ability to manipulate others into doing what he wanted, not the least of such incidents including convincing the head coach of his local baseball team to let him join mid-season entirely due to his significant ability to swing a scythe being similar enough to swinging a bat as to guarantee good performance. Because of this, people began to refer to him as "Ol' Scratch", an old term for the devil, one of the more infamous mythological tricksters and manipulators.

He started a family, receiving the blessing of triplets, two boys named Kale and Connor, and a little girl named Darra. He raised them to be farmers like he was. As the years passed, his skills grew, and his farm became the start of a sprawling business finding success in crop producing and selling all across the colonies. He began to lecture at his local university on psychology entirely from the knowledge he had gained from speaking with people over the years.

When the war with the Terrans began, his father-in-law managed to get him a deal with the Cetian forces, being the sole producer of produce for their rations in exchange for significant pay and publicity.

However, while Darra and Kale were happy to live as townfolk, Connor was extremely patriotic, the apple of his grandparents' eyes on both sides of the family, and thus joined the military to fight the Terrans. He was shipped away from home shortly thereafter. Only two years later, he was returned to his parents in a box.

At this point, Kale and Darra decided to enlist in the military to avenge their brother's death, but Terry forbade them. He was of the mind that if anyone was going to avenge Connor, it would be him. Ol' Scratch entered the military and began a personal vendetta against the Terrans, earning a simultaneous recommendation and scolding from his superiors for the extremely impressive results he got in exchange for complete defiance of orders.

His finest hour also ended up being the biggest stain on his career. In the waning months of the war, approximately three months before the operation to shut down the wormhole began, during the middle of the night he and a squad of personal supporters he swayed to his cause kidnapped a group of Terran POWs, brutally interrogating them until they discovered the location of the local head of Terran Intelligence. That night, they staged a surgical strike on his outpost, wiping out the man, plus his entire senior staff, and deleted three weeks' worth of intelligence gathered on the Cetians. This black spot in the Terran Intelligence network was one of factors that gave the Cetians the opportunity to shut down the wormhole and win the war, technically making Ol' Scratch Kopek a war hero.

However, his wanton disregard for the chain of command, on top of kidnapping and torturing prisoners of war, earned him the ire of the higher ups of the Cetian military, who dishonorably discharged him and his comrades, denying him the chance to serve in the final moments of glory of the war. He returned to his home, ashamed, where he and his family tried to rebuild their life minus a son.

However, some time later he received a message summoning him back into the line of duty. His commitment to victory by any means necessary during the had earned him the respect of the less morally-bound segments of the Cetian military, and was given the opportunity to join the elite commando teams heading into Terran territory and take the fight to them.

He couldn't possibly refuse.

I hope this is original enough, this sounds fun.

Out of a combination of wanting to improve my writing of character profiles, and a fear of GM propelled random-falling-anvils I've re-written my guy to this:

Name: Roman Longard
Age: 51
Gender: Male
Species: Modified human
Skills: Infiltration and marksmanship
Equipment: Ornate six-shot dualing pistol with silencer, sniper rifle (silenced, blates), various serveilance items and light armour
Appearance: Roman has thinning grey hair and a scraggly goatee. He is about 5ft 10" tall and has a slim build. He has dark brown eyes and is always well dressed and tidy, favouring suits and other "smart" clothes.
History: Roman grew up in a high ranking family on Tau Ceti, and even by its own prosperous standards, his family was rich. Roman grew accustomed to the formality and splendour provided by a rich parentage and became, for want of a better term, a spoiled brat. A more peculiar side effect of his clean and sheltered up-bringing was that he developed slight OCD and a pedantic nature. Naturally, Roman saw himself as above the lower, working classes, but didn't look down on them so much as regarding them as a child regards toys in a shop window.

He'd learned quickly that he was an excellent speaker, and was able to charm and woo lower class women (and even men during his more adventurous years). This carefree, easy life ended with the outbreak of war, and he marched off with most of his generation to defend Tau Ceti. The squalor of the fighting conditions on the front line disgusted him, but he felt a peculiar sense of comradeship to his fellow soldiers, and came to treat them as his equals. After a particularly accurate mortar bombardment blinded Roman, his father paid to have augmented eyes implanted in his head, and pulled a few strings to tranfer him from the front-line to a sniper squad. Outraged by his sudden removal from his comrades, Roman made it a point of pride to train himself to become the best sniper in the army. After assassinating his thirteenth enemy officer from a distance of over a mile away, Roman was moved once again, only this time to a special ops unit...

Roman has incredible people skills, greatly assissted by the cybernetically enhanced eyes. These not only help him when aiming down a scope, but also in noticing every tiny detail in a person's face: The twitch of an eyebrow, the dilating of the pupil. It all helps him to read people better, and therefor manipulate them.

Any improvement?

I guess that this guy could use a little expansion.
Name: Alan Striker
Age: 37
Gender: Male
Species: Modified Human
Skills: Espionage, assassination, sabotage.
Equipment: Wrist blades, customized action grip two pistols, a sub machine gun.
There are tally marks scratched into his arms, one for each Terran officer that he killed.
History: Alan was a farmer before the First Tau Ceti war, when conflict broke out he assumed that the colony would fall within a month, and in reality couldn't care less. One day he returned home to find that his barn had been bombed by the Terrans, they has suspected that it was a weapons cache. This was a larger part of an enormous fire bombing campaign ordered by General Johnson in an attempt to shock the colony into a surrender...one of many. He was remarked has being extremely brutal and effective compared to his fellow operatives, even smiling while killing his targets despite rarely doing so at all over times. His cybernetics allowed him to fire his weapons accurately with only one hand, so he prefers to wield an SMG and a pistol at the same time. When the war ended, Stalker operatives where taken off of active duty but kept on military rosters in case of further conflict. Unsure of what to do with himself, Alan wandered the colony without a purpose, working odd jobs. Depressed over the death of his family and feeling empty despite having fought off the Terrans, he turned to drinking to drown his sorrows. This led to an incident where five thugs attempted to mug him while he was under the influence. With little provocation, he brutally and mercilessly killed all of them, despite them begging for mercy. When he learned that the Terrans would be returning again, he volunteered again for the strike team and due to his impressive record, was immediately accepted. He is eager to again see combat, having come to believe that he no longer has any other purpose in life, and while he partially wishes to defend his home, he is still hungry for revenge and blood. Many command officers have filed worrying reports about Alan, stating that no other Stalker operative had such a behavior record and that almost all of them had peacefully and painlessly reintegrated into society. From this they drew the conclusion that Alan had deep mental issues, but he was still put on the strike team due to his invaluable abilities. Despite his bloodlust, off of the battlefield he is quiet and stoic, pushing away all Human contact and is emotionally jaded. While he pushes away people of both genders, he goes out of his way to avoid confrontation with women. Some believe that this is because of the guilt that he still suffers from letting his wife die and he does not believe that he deserves to love again.

That better?

When are we starting? It would be great if we could have responses from our GM other than regarding character sheets.

Everyone's ready to go.

I guess I'll flesh out my guy some more...

It wears a lot of human-made technology, created by the humans for it's race. The most important is a humidity-rebreather. Although they can venture on land, they breathe through gills rather than lungs. These must be kept damp in order to prevent the creature from suffocating.

Also wears a kind of "artificial eyes", mounted like goggles on it's face. Still, he is nearly blind at long and mid-range sight but motion detection would far outclass a human's (hairs on the exoskeleton, sensitive to vibrations in the air). Their sense of hearing would be shit but their sense of smell and taste would be leagues ahead of our own.

Strength is fuckhuge compared to a man (like Earth crabs). Brain isn't believed to be developed as much as a human's, due to lack of natural predators and the difficulty of tool use (you can't make fire underwater, for example). It is possible that the difficulty in communicating just makes them seem unresponsive.

Lack of resources on the ocean bottom makes them opportunistic scavengers, so they would eat you if you tried to fight one.

They don't really have families, either. Female carries an egg mass like a sponge. Male has a genital palps that are somewhere between paddles and hands, with a strong grip to better facilitate reprodution (by not letting go of the female).
