Obama has said that American troops will be out by the end of the year. Contractors will stay, but all US military forces will have gone. Thoughts?

Personally, I'm just glad our boys can come back home after this 10 year ordeal.

Into AFGHANISTAN, yes. But we're still "friendly" with Iran.

OT: yay, getting out of a useless war. Or, if not useless, unnecessary. Buuut, we're still fighting a war on terror... back to the middle east. d'oh...

EDIT: And just because the troops in Iraq are coming back to the US doesn't mean other troops in the US aren't going elsewhere.

I am going to be terrebly misinformed and say:
Good that the induvidual marines- who surely are quite nice people- are going home, bad that they were there in the first place.It was a invasion that was made under false pretenses and created more problems than it fixed.

I am not sure that the security situaton will be adequately contained with the contractors, since I haven´t heard much good about them.

Obama has a lot of things that aren't so, like closing Gitmo. I don't put too much faith in what a politician until he actually does it.

Meh, I'm from Canada, so I really don't care. Although, I predict those troops will be coming home, and then will be firing upon the Occupy Wall Street people before a week has passed. In all seriousness, this is more or less going to be "Forbidden City" all over again, except with America being the ones firing upon their own people. They've already been putting them in a bad light in the newspapers (As far as I can tell), and the police have done little. The next logical step (And by that,I mean completely effing insane) is either give in to the people's demands, or prep the tanks.

Secondly, seeing as how I've actually been there, I can safely say we've done more harm to our global image (*snicker*) than we have good. Though Iraq may become better off in the future, it will ultimately depend on them - and us getting completely out of there.

Finally, when (and if) the troops do come home, my guess is that they will either be redeployed to other parts of the world or...

Google "National Guard Kent State shootings". If this possibility occurs, I imagine it'll be much like what happened that day on May 4, 1970.

10 years only? I thought the Iraq-war started in the 80ties, ah well probably we just "officially" sent weapons and less cannon fodder back then.

I'm happy for those American soldiers too. In fact I'm happy for America, most countries will respect her a little more because Obama is finally pulling the army out of that mess.

Makes sense. At this point there's no real reason to stay there anyway. We've been training the Iraqi military for what, 6... 7 years now? If they aren't yet prepared to withstand the handful of insurgents we left alive then I suppose they never will be. Plus, after both of those wars we are now well-versed in sudden and massive invasions of desert countries populated with unorganized insurgents, so if they screw it up, we'll be back. WITH A VENGEANCE.

Iran's people need to hurry up and overthrow their government. I know it's risky and people will die, but it seems much riskier to leave someone as power-mad and obsolete as Khamenei in charge. What's better: a short, violent conflict with freedom and peace as a result or years and years of oppression and suffering with little support from other countries?

Considering that thr iraq war has been declared over at least 3 times in its 8 year history, im dubious.
However there have been a large increase in troop withdrawal and all, so maybe it is, but id check if those oil wells are dry first.
