I seriously wonder what's wrong with people sometimes. "You said something I disagree with about a thing! I'm angry and I'm gonna crash your website to show you how wrong you are!"
Welcome to modern gaming culture. I only wish that was the stupidest thing we've gone to war over lately...

The funny thing is that since his site doesn't have ads, their entire attack was completely pointless since it cost him nothing. If anything, the controversy gives him more attention.

Someone tried to censor him, basically. Clearly whoever did it doesn't agree with the right to free speech.

I bet Digitalhomicide are getting a kicked out of this despite it's only temporary.

OT- Really? There are other critics out there and they single him out?

I complain about game hype a lot; but mainly because people spend their money upon promises months or even years before knowing what they're getting, and I try to warn everybody about the unnecessary high risk of disappointment. Nevertheless, it's their money, and they can do whatever they want with it. It doesn't directly affect anyone else.

However, this time it seems someone's hype just took a turn for the worst. I suspect somebody saw the review's game score on Metacritic, may or may not have read the review, got their piss boiled down to pure salt, and executed a DDOS attack. It doesn't matter if you think Metacritc or game scores are stupid or not. Game reviews never deserve taking down websites (no matter how much you love or hate the game).
Errr...source? (On it being a DDoS, not his site being down).

His review was the ONLY review on Metacritic for quite some time. It's very possible that his site just plain couldn't handle the surge in traffic.

Is there at least have a statement by him on the matter? (Even then, there's a possibility he's wrong, but it'd at least be a starting point).

Yep, there has been.

He confirmed it was DDoS.

Why does this game seem to have such a hype tornado surrounding it? It never looked like anything more than curiosity.
Because the concept behind it sounded amazing when it was first announced. A space game based around exploring a dynamically self-generating universe. On any give day you could be the first one to discover a new star system, encounter new planets, find never-before-scene lifeforms, etc.

On paper, the game sounds awesome. But it was indeed another situation of a studio's imagination/promises exceeding their capabilities.

Its just MineCraft meets Elite Dangerous.
It really is. Or at least, that's what I got out of what I saw of the game. I remember one of my co-workers genuinely freaking out over the game after it was announced, so I dug a little to see what all the hooplah was about. Needless to say, I wouldn't exactly call it innovative or groundbreaking, but it at least looked like fun.

I think a lot of people get so wrapped up in pre-order hypes, teasers, and trailers that they fail to divulge any obvious flaws in the product. Like it's been stated by many others already, it's not like it was a true secret as to what the game would offer during it's inception.

What comes as a surprise is that it seems like more of the casual gamer crowd are enjoying it (at least in my assessment). The more hardcore folks I play with seem to be the most disappointed, and some are even asking for refunds because they feel the content quality does not justify the price of the game. To me, that's a bit of a subjective notion considering one game to one person could be rich and fun-filled, while to another the same game that offers the same content may not be as satisfying.

If you ask me, this hype train has got to be one of the most ridiculous ones I've seen in awhile. It's bleeding through locally, too. The GameStop in town was giving Song of the Deep a lot of exposure at a point, only to be lost in obscurity to No Man's Sky ads on loop. I get it that there are policies regarding games' exposure and such, but it's just unfortunate that due to the over saturation of hype from No Man's Sky, a game like Song of the Deep (something I'm actually interested in) got kind of pushed away into obscurity before it even had a chance to shine. Keep in mind, this is probably more of a local problem than anything, but disheartening nonetheless.

As far as the situation with Jim goes, that's a pretty low blow for someone to do that. The fact that one opinion of a game got someone so rage-filled that they had to sabotage his livelihood makes me really worry about the human race as a whole. It's no secret that his opinions and presentation of them can rub a lot of people the wrong way, but I have always admired him for sticking to his guns. His perverse demeanor is what makes Jim Sterling a recognizable and respectable face in the Escapist community.

My games top also dI'd this. My guess is its a corporate thing. Though I've seen ads for SMT4 Apocalypse and DQ7, though I think that's more the storeowner being a RPG fan.

I think I caught wind of that DQ7 commercial the last time I was there. I'm with you, I think it has something to do with the SM's certain favor of games (she's a hardcore JRPG fan at the end of the day).

Ironically, she was dismissing No Man's Sky saying that it just didn't spark her interest, and that it didn't have a whole lot to offer outside of what is obvious. I have a lot of respect for any higher-up who wont just blow smoke up your ass just to make sales quotas, so I hold her opinion in high regard, and tend to share most of them.

I went to another store in a nearby town, only to receive quite the opposite from that particular staff. I was bombarded with hype-talk over No Man's Sky to the point where it was unbearable to even browse, so I left.

I have experience in sales, and let me tell you, that was some of the worst salesmanship I have ever experienced. Clearly I don't give a shit about No Man's Sky when I'm looking at the back of Freedom Wars...

I never saw any commercials for DQ7. But our SM has empty boxes for DQ7 with a sticker saying "coming 9/16"

And that is terrible advertising. I would not be surprised if corporate told them to act like that. I worked in retail and I know shoving stuff in people's faces is a quick way to lose a customer.

It was a pretty obvious successor to Spore's legacy. Not sure why so many people were surprised by the result.

The fact that people are so passionate about loving/hating it boggles my mind.

TotalBiscuit recently published a theory about that.
