(Yeah, yeah. Wall-o-text. Deal with it. Or make yourself a cocoa or something.)

So... you know that one highly anticipated game from a respected developer that has been receiving stellar reviews?

Well, turns out it's a fucking fantastic game.

Crazy world, huh?

So, the story? Loved it. Although it has to be said that it deals in a lot of cliche. For a start, it's the bloody zombie apocalypse. Again. Yes yes, it's a slightly different zombie apocalypse, which is more than most games can manage, but it comes down to the exact same thing in the end. You play a gruff and tough guy with a capacity for violence who is charged with the protection of a young girl. So we're not exactly breaking new ground here.

However, I'm of the opinion that a cliche is acceptable if it's well executed, and the execution in The Last of Us is damn near perfect. The characters are great. They're not necessarily likable or entirely sympathetic, but they're understandable and grounded and multi-layered and just... human and I ended up really feeling for them. Their dialogue is well written and the voice acting is great. (Between this and Bioshock Infinite, Troy Baker is proving quite the talent, although apparently he's been around for ages.) The plot also manages to play around with, if not outright subvert, some of its tropes, especially toward the end.

Speaking of the end (Noooo, come back! When I say "no spoilers", I mean it), it strikes a great balance between bleakness, if not outright nihilism, ambiguity and optimism. It also has the confidence to leave a great deal unsaid without feeling the need to shove it all in your face. It's the kind of thing I can straight-facedly refer to as mature without having to pile on the qualifiers.

The game also does a great many things right in the gameplay department. (At this point I should mention that I played on 'hard', so bear that in mind if your experiences differed.) At last a game that blends stealth with action in a way that makes the stealth feel necessary without making the action just feel like what happens when I screw up the stealth. Fucking finally!

It's also great to see a game that actually tries to make resources, and ammo in particular, a scarce commodity. Personally, I think they could and should have gone further in this regard (I'm hoping that the 'survivor' difficulty forces you to get by on less). Still, they did enough that I regretted every missed shot and felt like a rich man when I saved up a whole ten shotgun shells.

The combat takes the form of desperate, personal and scrappy brawls that happen to involve guns rather than outright firefights. Given the lack of ammo, I sometimes found myself going in with four pistol rounds and a stick and the day was more often saved with a well aimed brick or correctly position human shield rather then a heavy application of lead.

Oh, and the game has a nice 'soft cover' system, rather like the new Tomb Raider. I'm hoping this will be the new thing for third person games, because it really does work better than the old press-X-to-stick-to-wall approach.

Naturally, it's not all perfect. The controls occasionally let me down. A quick note to the legions of developers who are no doubt reading this and hanging on my every word: when I push the stick to the right and press the melee button, it means I want to attack the target on my right. It does not mean I wish to sidestep to the right while flailing at empty air.

A couple of the fights made little sense in the context of the plot and served no purpose but to prevent impatient players from getting bored. (The most egregious instance being during the part where you're following Ellie on horseback.) It was obvious that the developers were thinking, "Oh crap, nobody's fired a shot for like a whole half hour! Quick, throw in some bandits!"

The game never tutorializes this, but there seems to be this system where enemies that have been shot (as opposed to strangled, stabbed or bludgeoned) are more likely to drop ammo. It's potentially exploitable and I didn't much care for it. Also, mid-late in the game you can find a home-made flamethrower, which is kind of OP. Combined with the ammo drops, this could probably let you cheese through the rest of the game.

Lastly, at the end it falls into that familiar trap of trying to make things feel climactic by handing you an assault rifle and relatively plentiful ammo and suggesting that you go to town. To the game's credit, you don't have to, but I kind of resent the attempt.

Lastly, the environments are really well designed, both in terms of level design and aesthetic. The Last of Us takes the Odyssey to the West approach rather than Fallout, taking place in a lush and overgrown world rather than a wasteland. It combines well with the tone of the game. Humanity may well be collectively going down the shitter, but humanity isn't the world and the world doesn't really give a damn.

So, all-in-all, no, the game isn't perfect, but it's close enough for me not to care. If you have access to a PS3 and don't suffer from a crippling allergy to great things, then you really should check out The Last of Us.

There are a couple of things I've noticed in this game that really bugs me. The loading times for one, I really hope they patch that at some point. Picking up items is another one, the animation is a bit shit, basically Joel makes a grabbing motion towards the item and it disappears. I think they could of done that a bit better.

But the thing that bugs me the most (and I've only played a little bit of this game, so maybe they stop doing it) but you sneak through a room full of clickers, infected that see using sound, they can clamber over walls and other obstacles to get you. You leave the room and almost immediately someone will say loudly something like "phew, that was scary". Shut the fuck up, they'll hear you.

But these little (and one bigger) nit picks, the game I've played so far has been really good. Even if at the rate I'm playing it, it should last me until Christas.

That's somewhere between a quarter and a third of the way through.

The game was longer than I expected.

The gameplay is just bleh. It's honestly got too many flaws to be enjoyable. I'm not that used to played a PS3, so at first I thought I was just naturally shit at aiming, but my friend (who I was playing with) also couldn't aim for shit, so we both basically opted for the shotgun and charged every single ************ that got in the way.

Joel also holds his gun about as steady as a 90-yearold drugaddict with Parkinsons disease, you literally couldn't hit anyome from afar in any way possible.
I remember having some trouble aiming earlier in the game, but I was fine by the end. I got the weapon stability upgrades first. That might have helped, or maybe I just got used to the controls.

Oh, and one-hit kill from clickers as soon as you got in range? Fuck you game. No, Fuck you. That is not fucking acceptable. yes, I know you can stop it with an improved shiv, but fucking hell man, those things were so goddamn hard to kill without the shotgun.
Other than the shotgun, the brick-and-bludgeon works on them. Alternatively, throw a brick to make a noise then molotov them when they bunch up.

Hope this helps.

Well Zhukov, I'm happy to inform you that "Survivor" difficulty is fucking grueling. Apart from pills and scrap metal the game gives you practically nothing. Oh sure, at the beginning it'll hand out some ammo here and there, but once you're alone with Ellie you have to hope some enemies might drop something. You'll fall to your knees and thank God when you can actually craft a medkit... and then proceed to treasure it for as long as is possible. Bricks and bottles are still aplenty, and they will become your primary form of attack.

I had to take on that first Bloater with just one bullet in my 9mm. I spent that entire fight just dodging and waiting for other infected to spawn in who might drop one or two rifle bullets.

I already spilled my guts about how much I fucking love this game in other threads, so I'll leave that for what it is.

Yup, good to see that game gets the praise it deserves. Honestly, I was amazed by just how amazing game turned out to be. While I still believe that Persona games have the best characters, The Last of Us nailed it in terms of character interaction. Seeing how Joel and Ellie form their bond through all the struggle they have to go through is just incredible.

Aaaaand that is exactly what I wanted to hear.

Now I kinda want to start over already, within 24 hours of finishing the first time.

I'm watching an LP (I have no PS3, it's legit shut up) and yeah the story is good but... Pushing boxes? Ladders? Planks? Like... These are looking like core gameplay mechanics. What the shit? I'm all for good pacing but stopping to place a ladder between firefights is not exactly the best way to do that right?

The zombies are half interesting but again, they are still zombies so not really. Points on it being a gas too though.

Yeah the characters are looking good but arg more child characters? Please. Please no. Stop. Clementine was tolerable but if having a little girl to escort around becomes the norm in all zombie games just to become automatically "emotionally engaging" I will be so annoyed.

Oh yeah, that's right.

There's a lot of ladders and planks and a few crates. Plus the game has that Uncharted fetish for people giving each other a leg-up.

I didn't find those bits overly engaging, but I recognize their necessity to the pacing and I'm glad they didn't make me do puzzles. Besides, there was usually some dialogue to tide me over.

I really want to play this game, but I hate using controllers when guns are involved in any way. Oooo! Is a total melee run possible?

I think what the game is trying to do is keep everything very grounded. No elaborate puzzles - which wouldn't make much sense in a wasteland - or platforming.

And it's not inbetween firefights. There's a lot of quiet moments in this game where you're simply walking around exploring the environment. It's actually when I think the game is at its best.

The zombies are half interesting but again, they are still zombies so not really. Points on it being a gas too though.
The difference being that the zombies here don't take center stage at all. Their importance to the story is quite downplayed. It actually does what good zombie/apocalypse stories should do; Use the impact of the disaster to put humanity's behaviour on display, instead of simply making it a monster hacking extravaganza.

Yeah the characters are looking good but arg more child characters? Please. Please no. Stop. Clementine was tolerable but if having a little girl to escort around becomes the norm in all zombie games just to become automatically "emotionally engaging" I will be so annoyed.
I actually didn't like Ellie at the start, because a) she's heavily modeled after Ellen Paige who I care little for, and b) she's a little smartmouth, and I fucking hate that. [small]That goes for you too, Hitgirl.[/small]

But this inturn made me feel more connected to the character of Joel, who was barely tolerating Ellie. Everytime Joel went "Argh, this fucking kid" as too was I.

As the game progresses though she really proves herself as a character and completely outgrows that "child damsel" role. She becomes emotionally engaging not because she's a kid, but because she's a very well written character.

Full melee would be problematic and not much fun. The melee "system" basically consists of mashing square. It's more about setting things up beforehand so you can mash square to the greatest effect.

I was kinda "eh" toward her up until she pulled out the magazine in the car, which made me laugh. By the time the university level was over she had well and truly worked her way into excellent character territory.

Absolutely loved the winter chapter. Favourite part of the game.

My completed save file says I took 19 hours.

However, I'm a very stop-to-smell-the-roses kind of player. Also, I died a lot at some points and I don't know if the timer takes that into account.

I'm sure you could finish it in 15 hours if you were in a hurry and playing on an easier setting.

That's still pretty good, longer then most games SP (non-RPGs) nowadays.

Damn... I really want to play- I wonder if my friend will lend me his copy when he's done.

So... must, must play games since 2008?

Sheesh, lemme think...

- The Last of Us. (Y'know, it case it wasn't obvious.)
- Bioshock Infinite. (Also the original, although that's from 2007.)
- The Walking Dead. (The Telltale game, not the other... thing.)
- Journey. (If you don't mind games on the "arty" end of the spectrum.)
- Amnesia: The Dark Descent. (Horror game.)
- Portal 2 (Also the original, obviously.)
- Bastion. (Stretching a bit, but it is a very charming game.)

Those are what I would consider the cream of the crop. Games that succeed at almost everything they attempt and do very little wrong. Although no doubt as I soon as I hit 'post' I'll realise I've forgotten something.

This next lot are a bit different. These are game that aren't great but do something interesting, or do one thing well in spite of major flaws elsewhere, or tend to be divisive love/hate cases, or come from more niche genres.

- Spec Ops: The Line.
- The Mass Effect trilogy. (Good DLCs: Lair of the Shadow Broker, Overlord, From Ashes and Citadel. Maybe Stolen Memory)
- A Beshesda game or Fallout New Vegas. (I don't actually like these, but it's worth looking into in case you do.)
- X-Com: Enemy Unknown (Squad-level turn based strategy.)
- FTL: Faster Than Light
- Red Faction: Guerilla
- Dishonored
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
- Dark Souls (Urrrrgh. Well, those crazy people who like it must have their reasons.)
- Batman Arkham City (If you don't dislike Batman as much as me, this would probably belong in the top list.)
- Bulletstorm (Okay, now I'm in danger of indulging myself.)
- Mirror's Edge (Okay, now I really am indulging myself.)

I just finished it maybe a half an hour ago and...it was great! For the most part. The beginning felt a bit weak, but after the first three hours or so I really got into it. As frustrating as it could be sometimes, the unforgiving difficulty was nice(I died about 110 times!) although the pacing regarding enemies could've been better. I was really hoping that the infected were going to appear more at random, while the fights against humans would've still felt more scripted. Combat was great and visceral which really set the tone well, and I just want to say that the game had really good game feel.

I just want to add that there was a part right by the end where I stood there for over 5 maybe 10 minutes thinking about a choice, even if the game had not given me a choice in the first place. It's hard to describe without spoilers so I'll just leave it at that.

I loved the game, wouldn't give it a perfect score but it's still pretty high, but I'm glad you seemed to have a blast with it OP.

I adored this game. Mostly because of the story. I found that rather than being your regular run-of-the-mill Zombie apocalypse, it had incredible amounts of wealth. Not in the plot. The plot was pretty straight forward, but what they did exceptionally well was the incredible Character Development. Then that ending... wow. Something else. I did not see it coming, but it felt like it made sense... even though many swear words left my house and I went on youtube to make sure that I saw it right.

I didn't find that it had many flaws... I found that the difference between the infected and humans to be brilliant, and I loved the graphics. Perfect score in my books. Next to MGS4 I found this to be the best game on the PS3. Even better than the ever brilliant Uncharted 3! Although I have a huge bias towards MGS4.

I can't wait till PS4 comes out and Naughty Dog comes out with their next masterpiece... I'm telling you, those devs are the best in the business.
