Have any of you ever had that moment in a game - The Last Stand Effect - where your going to die the odds are so out of proportion that defeat seems inevitable? How many of you have fought back despite this? How many of you have felt you heart quicken at the prospect of the challenge the need to fight to the last man - it doesn't even matter if you have 1 builder left or one guy left you run around to draw it out as long as possible? Do you, like myself, actually prefer these sought of battles where your skills as a strategist are pushed to the limit? And do you enjoy it?

- I am particularly guilty of playing Eldar in |Do\/\/ Dark Crusade on Demes Northlands and then hiding in every nook and cranny if I lose my main force :p

It's the best part of a game.

Supreme commander, where my main long range defenses go down and it's up to what I can build until they get to my base.
Mount and Blade, where the enemy outnumbers me 400 to 60, and I imagine my lord giving out his "Do not go gentle into that goodnight" speech.
And probably a few others I can't remember.

DoW II tried to do this on the last mission, but then you're bailed out, which ruined it- would have worked better if they'd just slaughtered you.

I always prefered to think of it as the Become a Prick effect, because regardless of what game it is, when my back is against the wall and I have nothing to use I play 10 times more aggressively. While this may not be the most effective tactic, I am going to piss everyone of my opponents off before I go down and then on the few times when the kamakaze actually works there is nothing sweeter in gaming.

I had one really awesome one in FFXII I poster earlier in another thread like this. Let's see...

FFXII, against one of the Judge Magisters. He owned my party completely and Vaan is left as the last man standing. After using almost every reviving item I've given up on even trying to get the other teammates up and fighting again.
Not only that, the whole battle is goind deeply downhill, Vaan relying completely on the few major healing items I have left. I also had to use almost every magic stone item that was remotely useful (like Haste, Shell, Protect and etc. stones), and mind you, I never need to use those.

So there I am, fighting a losing battle, eventually out of any useful healing items and HP on critical, dealing next to no damage to the Judge, I throw as the last effort a Darkra and Holy Stones I had left on the bottom of my dwindling item pile, and just as I'm expecting to recieve the merciful finishing blow that'd send me back to my last save (that was quite a while ago. FFXII isn't the most forgiving with its placement of save points) the animation of Holy finishes and strikes the Judge dead.
Cue to hysterical: "FUCKING YES!!!".

I played Rome total war like that once, I had 1 unit of crew (probably nearly equal to peasants) and I nearly took the entire enemy castle with them, I was outnumber about 10 to 1 by heavier units, eventually they regrouped however, and my [by then] 20 guys were no match for 200 or so spearheaded by polish knights, epic though.

I hate it how in most games there is no point to a last stand though. Most of the time you won't even be making any kind of difference.

Another game I had was in Men of War, it was a point based game (4v4), the enemy had 450 or something points and we had about 5 more, problem was that they had a bunch of tanks left and all we had was a tank crewman each and no money to buy reinforcements, we were hiding in the bushes as the enemy frantically searched for us, trying to uncover one of our guys before the timer ran out and they lossed :) My guy was discovered and shot :( Luckily we got through by a couple of points though, veerrry close match, not really a last stand but awesome nonetheless :D

I had a similar thing - my army had been routed and killed inside the my castle, aside from my general and his bodyguard of 10. They faced off against a whole army and inflicted massive casualities to the enemy (I think it was something crazy like 75% casualities) before, sadly, falling to their swords

THIS! Mount and Blade has epic last stand moments.

TF2 Arena is good for last stands too, I once killed off 5 enemies including a scout, soldier, and medic in Nucleus as a Sniper. And one time my team had been decimated as a scout, I looked at the score, and I had been the only one to get a kill, there were still 5 enemies left, I killed 4 and died :( stupid pyros around corners.
