The last time I go to the movies (at that theater)

When I went to see the last batman film a man sat with his baby in the 3rd row, and it screamed and cried for the 45 minutes that I sat there and endured it. Eventually I got up asked for a replacement ticket for another show later that night and left.

If you can, I suggest going at odd times, like in the morning or noon or on a weekday. Prices might be cheaper then too. Of course I mean that you and others do this on summer/winter breaks if you still have them. As expensive as it is, sometimes the theater is the best way to see a movie. Please don't give up movie theaters forever (one day they could be gone.)

My brother had a magical "Mystery Science Theatre" experience watching "How to Train Your Dragon" in an almost empty theater. I was there too, but he liked it more then I liked it. Unfortunately for the theoretically few people there, he was a little loud.

I dunno OP, it sounds like you are uptight, and as you said, did nothing about it. The fault is yours.

You could have gotten an usher.

You could have ignored those minor disturbances.

You could have left the theater, asked for a refund, and then seen something else.

No, you were there alone and apparently decided to add to your misery by looking for things to make you miserable and deliberately doing nothing about it. It's on you. But stay at home alone, it sounds like you aren't good around people anyway.
Yes, it really does.

Wait...wait. Were we talking about the OP or you?

@OP This is why drive-ins are nice. You have a nice self contained room to be with friends and the film comes through crystal clear on your radio. I went to movies constantly when I used drive ins, I could almost not be paid to go see films now without them.

I feel for you OP, had The Dark Knight ruined for me by some asshole who wouldn't shut the hell up and wouldn't turn his stupid phone off.

To this day I wish I'd told him to shut the fuck up - because chances are your not the only person being pissed off by their douchebag behaviour. Now I just avoid going for a few weeks if I can help it so that the screen is nearly empty.

Yup, some people don't seem to freaking understand that the people in the film aren't real (well the actors are but...). THEY CAN'T HEAR YOU, YOU DON'T NEED TO REACT TO WHAT THEY DO.

The only group more annoying are the parents who assume that 12A (don't know what it would be called in America) means you can take your 4 year old to go watch Terminator 3 (actually happened).

I worked at a theater for a while, and was pretty pissed when this couple brought their five year old to see Texas chainsaw massacre (the newer one). I was concerned that seeing the film would fuck the kid up, so I tried to talk them out of it. They basically told me to mind my own business, and since there was nothing I could do about it I had to sell them tickets. Their kid cried through the whole movie though, or at least until the manager ask them to leave because of all the people complaining about the noise. Anyway that's my terrible story about horrible parents taking their kids to movies that well traumatize them for sure. I can still remember that little boys red crying face as they left the theater.

Come to Canada. I've never had excessively distracting people sit near me (besides a couple of kids, but they hushed up when their parents told them to). Also, assigned seating? They do that in movie theaters? Wat?

I don't go to movies often because I don't have a ton of money, but when I do, I never have problems with the people around me.
Canada always seems to have better solutions to everything.

OT: Just tell the fucker and if he annoys you, if you are more attractive then him, hit on his girlfriend for a while until he gets into a hissyfit. Then someone else will make him leave.

Although that's an actual 12, not a 12a.

Still certainly not our equivalent of R which is an 18.

I wasn't doubting him. Just demonstrating the US version of the ratings system and saying they're not strictly the same, so it might not reflect the trends.

It looks like 12a would be close to analogous to PG-13, save that 12 and 12a have actual distinctions in terms who's let in. The only times children are turned away as a general rule are for R and NC-17 (Like R, but an adult can't take you in), and those are self-regulated in the States.

I've been to Canada once.
People were so much nicer there :)

But, back on-topic.
I totally understand not wanting to escalate the problem/annoy others, but if that prick wasn't showing any sign of stopping, it is better to cause a slightly bigger annoyance for a few seconds than to make the whole theater put up with him for another hour. That's just my two cents.

And what theater uses assigned seating? Was it just because it was a big release?

The obvious solution is to go to a theater without assigned seating. I've never heard of something so retarded before.

Also, are you a guy or a girl? The scenario I'm playing in my head looks far different depending on the answer to this question...

Hey, at least it didn't happen during a GOOD movie!

Seriously though, it really annoys me when stuff like this happens, and I agree that the OP had no real way of stopping the asshole from talking.

While there are a few differences, 12a seems about equivalent to PG-13

Interestingly, PG-13 was made because parents took it to mean "OK For Everyone" instead of "use your own discretion" ("Parental Guidance," to be literal), but now it seems to have come full circle DX
The 'a' indicates to me that a similar story may be behind 12a.
