Hi all. I own an Xbox 360 & PS2 and have hung fire buying a new console until they've had time to build up a base of good games first.

Anyway, the last few months have seen a big upheaval within my life which has essentially meant I've totally lost track of what's happening with this generation's releases.

So now that things are settling, I was wondering is it worth considering purchasing a console from this gen yet? And if it is what games are MUST have games (so in the Super Mario World, Deus Ex, X-Com, MGS1, bracket of brilliance)?

Thanks :)

I'm maybe somewhat biased in this one, because I'm solely a PC gamer.

But in my eyes, there's nothing really amazing on the 3 new consoles now.

The WiiU has with Super Mario 3D World a pretty great platformer and with Mario Kart etc. the 'usual Nintendo stuff'
The other two consoles don't have anything outstanding yet. Only the PS4 has a remastered version of Last of Us. The XBone has only average exclusives. Also the triple A games released on all consoles and PC are very mundane (and most of them have been released on XB360 and PS3, anyway)

I'd wait with buying a new console.

Sounds as if they're all some way off being worth buying yet :(

It's actually made me think of getting atop spec PC at some point, but finances won;t allow it at the mo anyway, so I guess I'll just still to older games for a while :)

Nothing.

Watch dogs? A fucking mess of compromise and repetition.

Destiny? A grindfest.

Dead Rising 3? Its Capcom, so it runs like shit even on consoles. They rushed a port on PC and it was just as bad.

The majority of next gen is in 2015, and the only thing that even seems worth it is the witcher 3 which the majority of its content is locked off for console gamers since there is no save transfer on consoles.

The rest is a rehash of the same games from the past couple years. HD remakes that really do nothing.

Metro Redux? Its not worth the asking price if you already have the old game. Especially if you own the sequel with DLC. The only good thing about it is graphics but it just turns it from low to high. On a game that is already 4 years old.

And lets not get into the games for next year which have red flags all over it like the order 1886. The dev team is on damage control before its even released and previews are rehashed. Even game journalists are starting to get worried.

Dragon Age? Bioware went down hill.

Shadow of Mordor which is coming soon? Again, red flags from the dev team.

Currently, next gen has no games. In 2015, the future looks incredibly dim with developers pushing out fuck up after fuckup. Either that, or rehashing old games.

I would not recommend it. Especially if you came to be wowed by the leap in scale, and graphics.
Witcher 3 especially and Dragon Age: Inquisition less so are the only the only titles which have me excited for the next gen. But as you say it's right to be weary of them until they're actually released. the saved content thing doesn't really bother me too much either. But even then I'd much sooner wait until they've been out a few months to get tweaked with patches and suchlike, then buy a special/enhanced/GOTY edition, so no rush.

It sounds as if the EA/Micheal Bay approach to gaming hasn't quite died off just yet with processed approach to releases. Let's hope we start seeing actual good games again soon.

Obligatory PC is master race, get a gaming PC and ascend to join us in the heavens as we laugh down at the puny console peasants.

If you are cursed and can't get a PC then I'd recommend just sticking with your 360. There are not that many great new games this gen yet so there isn't really any pressing need to buy an expensive new console yet. I am still playing and enjoying a lot of my old 360 games and many new games are still available on the 360.

If some decent games come out then it may be worth investing in a PS4 but for now it doesn't seem that worth it unless you feel a pressing need to play Infamous: Second son or something nor does it look like anything particularly good is coming out anytime soon.

To be honest, only the WiiU has enough games I would want to play, to consider buying a console. Of course that is because I have a strong PC, so the only thing Xbone and PS4 can do to get me to want them, is to have exclusives I want. Unfortunately, neither of them have enough exclusive content that I have to play. I already own the Wii U, so I am pretty much covered, unless the PS4 ends up blowing me away with content made for their Project Morpheus VR headset, that hasn't even been announced as actually being a product that will release...

You don't really need a top spec PC to play next gen. These next gen consoles are borderline on power because they wanted them to be cheap. AMD was never known for its high powered hardware, it was known for being cheap. There are many builds I can link you to that can make a next gen level PC for around 400-500$.

The Nvidia 750 TI really raised the bar, since its on par with next gen consoles and its cheap to boot. Graphics hardware has come so far from 10 years ago. Consoles are made to be custom, one level of hardware. However, modular graphics cards have become so refined the power difference is staggering. Custom can't compete with modular anymore.

Especially since Nvidia and AMD do the optimization for their cards. They got organized, and there is no way for a dev team to compete with that amount of knowledge.
My main problem with PC's is that I'm a bit of a technophobe, and I love the simple plug-in and play aspect of consoles. It's also a pain absolutely thriving on a game, and then 5-10 years later being unable to play it because of OS changes etc. I'm also a big lover of the traditional controller setup and cannot stick Windows 8, which is why I'm sticking with a lower key build for a while.

That said I still game on PC here and there. Just playing through The Witcher again at the mo, and there are definitely games which just work better on PC.

I dare say I'll end up getting a better spec PC at some point. Whether it's before or after I buy a console from this gen really depends on what games get released, and their quality.

Thanks for the advice :) That's one of the reasons I started the Risen 2 thread, because i'd started to look elsewhere for games, yet there are still some great games out there I'd not played, but which have been wrongly panned (yes they may be flawed, but you can still get loads out of them)

I'm still playing a PS2 too, so plenty to keep me ticking over!

Who'd have thunk it eh? Both consoles paling into comparison to the Wii U. Whatever happens I hope that the games industry will have learned a that hype & change alone do not guarentee sales.

Reading that post is painful, so much negativity and all of it AAA based. Smile, for your own sake.

Anyway ultimately what do you like Danbo Jambo? If we don't know that than its actually pretty pointless to comment further (won't stop some people from posting the usual rehearsed comments I know).
If you like platformers like Mario (going by the OP) than buy a Wii U, don't let the AAA bunkum bother you. The handhelds are also excellent for those sort of things too.

Good point regards my gaming tastes. Have to say that my fave games have become RPGs. Dragon Age:Origins, The Witcher 2, Mass Effect, Fallout 3 - these are the games which suck me in the most now. I enjoy many others though, but racing games aren't my cup of tea, and I can't stick games that are all flash and little soul (Gears of War, COD, Mass Effect 3 etc.)

Wii U may well be something I look at. I'd never considered one before because I've never really liked handhelds, but thinking about it more - and their rep for having good JRPGs - it may be something I look into.

Go for the system with the games that interest you most frankly. I'm in the lucky position of having a decent gaming PC so I play most of my multiplats on there. I'm currently tossing up between getting a PS4 for Infamous: SS, Bloodbourne, Uncharted 4 and Kingdom Hearts 3 and a WiiU for Smash Bros, Bayonetta, Mario Kart and Hyrule Warriors. I'll probably end up owning both in the long term (next couple of years), but I'll probably get one or the other in 2015.

If you don't have a good PC I'd say PS4. Simply because it will have a lot more third party support than the WiiU.

If a gaming pc isn't something you can afford right now then perhaps the WiiU really is the way to go. It's cheaper than the other two consoles and it actually looks like it hasn't a pretty decent line up of games on the way, more than can be said for the other two consoles.

Either that or stick with what you have now and buy a pc later.

Thanks, one of the reason's I started the thread was in the hope that someone would say something like "X game is awesome, and you simply must play X game too!" much like I would about The Witcher 2 or Mass Effect for the 360.

From the response so far though, it seems as if Wii U is the only one really worth considering at the mo I guess.

Any Wii U games which you would say really get your juices flowing?

Yea, that's how it seems for me too right now. The PS4 has a few good titles on the horizon, but mostly for fans of pre-existing franchises. The WiiU has some great titles coming out now or very soon though, I've been drooling over Hyrule Warriors gameplay videos lately.

All new console hardware is going to suffer the initial shite game syndrome at the beginning as the devs are still very much green.
It will no doubt get better as it goes along. A year or so down the line and we will start to see what the consoles can really do.

I have yet to buy it myself but I am definitely tempted, I think it would be a nice addition along with my pc. Of the games it has coming out I would say that I am most looking forward to the new smash bros game. I had a great time on the Wii version (although only got to play it round friends houses) so it's definitely one I would get first.

I'm also quite interested in the Hyrule Warriors game. I know some don't like that style of game but to me it looks like something I could have a lot of fun with. I'm keeping my eye on Splatoon as well, looks like a more colourful take on third person shooters.

If you don't mind playing games flawed games then I'd recommend trying Too Human on the 360. The developer is gone and im not sure if it can still be purchased on the marketplace but it was a pretty fun game despite it's massive flaws.

It may not be your thing but I'd recommend giving it a look, I enjoyed it well enough for it's setting and the fact that the gameplay is pretty enjoyable early on.

Nice avatar OP ;)

OT: I'm hoping to build myself a frigging awesome gaming rig in the next year or so. I'm an RPG and RTS fan at heart so the console exclusive games don't really excite me all that much... That being said I'm tempted to get a Wii U as well because dammit I miss couch co-op (clearly should have won this weeks no right answer)and the E3 footage for the new Zelda looked amazing.

Overall this new generation is leaving a pretty sour taste in my mouth it seems like a lot of the problems I had with the last generation are here to stay and publishers seem even more determined to cram multiplayer, meaningless online components, or fucking micro transactions down my throat.

Hey look a "current gen" thread being filled with doom and gloom, how surprising ! ( said nobody ever).

Well i have a ps4 and am enjoying it.
Free indie games ( and discounts on regulsr games) because i have ps+ ( 4 dollars a month, if you can't afford that you shouldn't have a console).
You can also stream games from your ps4.
You can also play ps3 games with playstation now

Destiny is awsome if you have friends.
FF14:Arr on the ps4 is the best version of the game if you like mmos.
Wolfenstein:TNO is awsome fps
Theif is good if you like stealth games
The evil within is comig out soon
As is the witcher 3
And Dragon age inquisition
And Guilty gear XRD.

It would help to know what you're a fan of.

Between the two consoles, the ps4 is the clear winner both in number of sales and content at the moment. So if you were to choose between them that would be my top recommendation (the ps4 is also 50% more powerful than the XBO so this will come into play later too).

The WiiU is actually getting pretty close to hitting the threshold of being worth buying if you view it as a Nintendo game tax rather than a system to play anything else. I'll personally have to see another price drop and more drops in game prices

It seems like any XBO exclusives are going to PC so I'm almost entirely not interested in them this go around even though I love the Xbox and didn't exactly dislike the 360. I just find Sony's exclusives to generally be far more numerous than Microsofts handful of shooters and mere-timed exclusives.

For the PS4 in no particular order:

1. Killzone Shadow Fall - This is an entirely legitimate game. Fun and worth getting though I'll admit it isn't ever going to be a HUGE best seller game. Graphics are stunning at points and it's a solid shooter.
2. inFamous Second Son - Did you enjoy inFamous 1 and 2? This game is great if so.
3. Various indie titles. Seriously, they've made a huge push in this area and there are some pretty good ones out there if this is your cup of tea. My friends have loved TowerFall multiplayer for example and it was free with PS+ if you had it when that came out.

Really, most of the games worth getting are cross-buys or outright remasters. The Last of Us, Metro Redux, Tomb Raider Definitive Edition, Watchdogs, Destiny, GTA 5 etc. If you are a graphiophile or haven't played those games yet, this is a decent time. If you have played those games and aren't swayed by graphics then wait a bit.

I've certainly enjoyed my PS4. The ps+ free games have been really good here and there and you can't get ones from previous months after they're replaced with new ones so you are missing these games.
