I first played it... God, I can't remember, but I was 3 foot tall and had a broken leg, so yeah, pretty young. It was a convoluted piece of shit and it's still a convoluted piece of shit that a ton of people happened to love. It is horribely overrated, and what irks me most is that although II is vastly superior, it's considered a black sheep, despite the fact that the series hadn't been established long enough to have a standard.

No, it hasn't dated well. You could, however, say it's fermented rather than gone stale, as people will never leave it alone, ever. But it wasn't necessarily a bad thing on its own; as you say, it's remember for what it wrought, and not what you bought (I'm a poet) at the tender age of 9 or whatever age you were. Instead, you got a confusing... thing, and maybe a guidebook. So, it's kind of like the high-emergency prison escape that tightened the security of all prisons worldwide in its aftershock.

What's sort of funny is that both the NES games play nothing like the future games. It's really Link to the Past that created the standard Zelda game. Yet Adventure of Link gets the bad rap.
