The little things that made you not want a game

As suggested by the title, there are often some small things that make me not want to spend time with a game. By small things, I mean things that don't really seem like they would normally be all that off-putting, but for some reason they just make me look at the game and go "meh".

The most prominent one of mine that comes to mind is with Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions. The off-putter? The fact that you can only play as humans in the game. I was a huge fan of Tactics Advance, so I know I would really enjoy the game, but the lack of playable races makes me not want to put down $20 for the game at my local Gamestop. For me, the races seem like a big appeal to the series; if you wanted, you can roleplay as a human-elitist, or a moogle-rights activist, or what ever. That's a little bit of an extreme way to put it, but I really enjoy the variety of races in most of the Tactics games. There's also the fact that Grimoire of the Rift for the DS has different races... so it kind of bothers me that the one for the PSP (which is my portable of choice) does not.

Any little things that make you steer away from games that you would probably otherwise like?

Well, the PSP title, War of the Lions, is a remake of the first Final Fantasy Tactics. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was the first one with multiple races. If it's any consolation, in WotL, you can unlock Cloud from VII and Baltheir from XII as characters.

In that timeline, aren't the other races... sorta... you know, extinct? There was a great disaster between FF12 and Tactics, IIRC.

I've been put off by games having multiplayer, and multiplayer achievements. What's wrong with single player?

Forced multi-player achievements. Go to hell the die AC:Brotherhood and Revelations. And also you Bioshock 2.

Ah, now see, I didn't actually do very much background research about the games. It is nice that there's an explanation about it (because it would have bothered me if I had thought more about it and realized it didn't make sense to me without knowing the background), but that's not my real issue. It's just a weird personal nagging feeling at the back of my head telling me that I want to kick ass with my army of Snipers and Dragoons.

Even though, Balthier is quite a nice consolation... But Cloud doesn't make sense to be in Ivalice, so it kind of cancels it out xD

The never ending change in technology that is pushed into our faces which is the psp. Than again, isn't all games like that? Graphics are important but it's not the be all and end all.

In Far Cry 2, everything wanted to kill you and it wasn't fun it was just taxing to me.

Apparently (at least according to everyone I ever talk to) tons of glitches and game-breaking bugs are little things, so I guess they're the little things that stopped my from buying Skyrim for the PS3.

IIRC, he actually gets transported to the world of Tactics, not just living there. But yeah, he even gets his Limit Breaks as special moves and a Materia Blade sword.

Ah, again I stand corrected!

I haven't played Skyward Sword yet, and I surely will, but I'm pretty put off from what I understand is a much increased implementation of motion controls.

Motion controls are something I merely tolerate on the Wii. The last thing I want is for games to rely on them even more.

Another thing I love about Tactics is that the game is chock full of references to the other FF games before it. For example, you'll find a journal entry or somesuch detailing ruins of Paramecia, which was from Final Fantasy II. You can also recruit monsters, and the game is only $10 if you buy it off the PSN. My one complaint that was in the original game, and I don't know if it's still in WotL, is that the game starts out very difficult, then gets easier until random battles where the difficulty randomly spikes back up again.

... Yeah because those are the only games with multiplayer achievements.

OT: Probably QTEs. Like lots of them. .Over. and over.

Exactly the reason why I'm not buying Skyward Sword as well; I play Resident Evil 4 because that's barely any movement with the Wii. It's just point with the Remote and move with the other part. Skyward Sword is a game where you need to swing your arms in order hack and slash; do that for a good 30 minutes and you'll get tired. At least with the Kinect in a game like Dance Central not only do you learn some moves...I'm not sure if they're good ones, but you also get a good workout after playing it for at least a good hour.

I think the one that annoys me the most is the whole flying thing. I've only read about it, and it sounds ridiculous. The flying parts sucked in Super Mario Galaxy 2, and this sounds even more tedious.

Quite often it's the games 'gimmick' that puts me off. Like QTE's or timed challenges or some special new move/button combo/magufin that's announced proudly on the box. It really does depend on the genre of the game though. If I think it's aping a really great game (Two Worlds for example) then I probably won't bother, or sometimes just if it's by a developer I've not seen great things from in the past. Sometimes even the boxart makes me put a game back on the shelf. It all varies.

They knew exactly where you were almost as soon as you pulled the trigger of your gun. Enemies 12 miles away would get a bead on you with their pistols, striking you with about 80-99% accuracy.

This arguably isn't a small thing but games that have locked content until you put in a code online. My 360 can only get online some time so I can never really download anything reliably. The last few times my system tried updating, it took about three tries for the update to complete, just as an example. I'm not even talking about online-only multiplayer (also a pain in the ass) just generally locking things out until you input the online pass.

Yeah, that sounds really interesting, actually. I may end up getting the game eventually, just because I KNOW that I would like it if I started playing it, as much or more so than FFTA. But again, the picky monster at the back of my brain is just saying "noop, y u no has meh peeplez?". But the capture monsters thing may be enough to make me eventually change my mind, especially since I've heard almost nothing but good about the game.

By all means, it has a recommendation from me, for what that's worth, lol. It's a fun SRPG. Also has a very dark story, with lots of love and betrayal. Almost like an old English play.
