Iv'e come to realise something just moments ago. I am currently playing SMT:Nocturn, everytime i level up i can choose which stat i put a point in. Now there is a luck stat,in which i have never put a point in.Then it hit me,i have never ever, put a single point in luck in any game i have ever played which gave me the option to do so.Even in fallout 3 and NV,i usually removed all the luck points and distribute it to other things i found more useful.I can honestly say i have no idea what luck does in any game.

So my question to you guys is : in games which customisable stats , do you bother putting points in Luck? Have you seen a difference? Is the luck stat usefull in any game?

Edit: Good lord , so many typos , i will try to edit them, so please don't stone me grammar nazis.

Luck in most games determine your critical hit rate...yet oddly enough i never put a point into it when i can...hell in fallout i take points OUT of it...

I also have never usually bothered with Luck. In Fallout I believe it effects how often you'll get Crits on enemies in VATS, but I find after getting one or two VATS upgrades I never miss and can usually just blow something's face off regardless. No reason that I need Crits if I'm shooting a Raider in the face with a FUCKING ROCKET LAUNCHER.

In fact in most games Luck usually has to do with Crit chance, or enemy drops. I never bother with it. Why bother putting points into more damage that might randomly happen when I can put them into Strength or whatever and simply do more damage altogether?

In fallout i usually put it down to about 3, because over the course of the game there's usually chances to get it upto 5.. but apart from in NV if you wanted to win at the casinos, its pretty much a useless skill.

The Luck stat is usually hacks on wheels in most games that have it, but it typically requires a major investment to get to that point. I seem to remember in SMT games in paticular in helps with gambling, fusions, and other things. Many games even spell it out that Luck adds a small bonus to everything you do, so by focusing in Luck you can build a sort of polymath that has a high bonus for every action in the game.

In Fallout 3 and New Vegas Luck was useful because it directly affected your critical hit rating, given how powerful crits can be, having a 10 in luck is the start of many really broken builds. In New Vegas in paticular Luck is good because it adjusts your odds when gambling, it's much easier (less saving/loading and such) to win at slot machines and such, and the dealer becomes less likely to pull "magic cards" out of nowhere in Blackjack for example.

Luck builds are hardly no first choice, but I've tinkered with them, and they can be pretty amazing. Typically they work best for people willing to start out slow and do a lot of long term development.

Fallout did a reasonable good job of ensuring there weren't really any true "dump stats", Charisma being the closest because most of the things you need it for default to the barter or speech skills, but if I remember the raw attribute figures into things a few times.

Luck determines Crits in FO3 and NV, so no Luck means very few crits. Also Luck in NV lets you gamble much more easily (Unless you prefer losing caps, that is). Often it adds very little to your character, yet that little bit can become very important.

mmm... luck is something that in almost all games is something you can safely ignore,(unless your going for 100% with rare item drops and even then it's only kinda useful some of the time.) That said i urge you to rethink it in the case of fallout since it quite literally increases your chances for success in EVERYTHING you do; and even lets you see events and scenes that you cant, or are at least very unlikely to, otherwise

LaTale and the turn based Mario games have the luck stat factor into the game heavily. (It's called 'Stache' in Mario, though)

Also, luck is very important in the international version of FFX where the bonus bosses had RIDICULOUS amounts of health.

...is bullshit. Nothing should be luck based like that. Critical hits and things are fine, but those should be decided by actual skills.

it really depends on the games build... if luck affects a little of EVERYTHING, or even just drop rates, or both, i'll usually put a lot of points into it. however, if it's just a crit modifier, i rarely bother with it because it's practically useless. (most of my kills in Fallout were sneak-crits anyway... didn't need ANOTHER crit...)

I used to roll a crit hit specialist in the first two Fallout Games. With the right perks and traits it was one of the best combat options. It helped that you could crit the eyes and groin though. It isn't as useful in the FPS Fallouts but can still be useful. Especially if you are snarky to Moira and get the juicy crit bonus from the Wilderness Survival Guide.

When I role play I like to have a few things in common with my character, and that means no luck. Since if I did give my character luck, I have none so it wouldn't work anyways.

There are some games I'd put luck in. FFX for example, I think it affected critical hit rate (possibly), evasion and accuracy, so it was a great stat to give to Yuna when you have the right spheres for it because it also affected her summons (meaning you practically get about 16-25 points of luck spread over half a dozen character for the price of one fortune and one luck sphere.

In Oblivion I was under the impression that luck gave small boosts to all skills, so 1 point in Luck was the best option when levelling unless you had +5 in three stats (in which case "OMG +5!"). If it wasn't for the Warrior sign (or whatever the sign is that gives you +10 endurance to start with) I'd pick the thief every time. But because of the way health works, it is best to focus on maxing endurance as a high priority, unless you intend to abuse the chameleon glitch or be so over-powered that nothing could ever hit you.

It really depends on the game. In some games, it ups your droprate, in others, it boosts crits and dodge chance. It just depends.

I made a character in New Vegas with ten luck for funzies. I got tons of loot (Good thing too, because the mod I was using makes loot less common) crits left and right and had relatively balanced stats overall because luck gives points to everything.

Oh my yes. RPGs can use luck for anything from increasing the probability of a critical strike to increasing damage on all weapons and what you'll find in various chests.

So it does strongly depend on the game, but nearly anything that has a somewhat random outcome can be impacted by your luck stat. In some games, I found the game much easier after dumpting a bunch of points into luck. I killed monsters faster and got more out of it.
