Because its perceived as cool. Therefore its perceived as cool to hate it.

It doesn't matter that they are two different operating systems suited to two different uses, both mac users and PC users are meant to hate each other.

I owned a macbook. It was great while i had it until it began crashing more than when i had a PC and basically dieing on me. I couldn't do a thing. Eventualy as we were about to get it serviced the motherboard just died from basic tasks.

I do not hate mac but the reason i got a PC was
1. i missed PC gaming
2. when a mac stops working there is nothing you can do about it
3. garage band was the only good program i had on the mac i could not get on PC and PC has fruity loops, acid, cubase ect anyway.
4.A Mac would cost way more. I payed $2000 for a basic macbook. My computer now which can run anything except Crysis on high cost just over $1000 dollars.

Nah I was just being cynical.

I'm actually typing this on an old G3, although my family has two G5's, one for general use and one exclusively for iPhoto, since my mum is the unofficial photographer for the school she teaches at. Its currently holding over 25,000 photos and doing fine.

The biggest issue with the macs for games as I see it is that they need different graphics card firmware and the release of compatible graphics cards from say nVidia is usually about 6 months behind and the cost is more - and in that time the PC graphics cards are already a generation ahead!

For instance, check this page hyping up the *amazing* graphics capabilities in the mac pro:
http://www.apple.com/macpro/technology/graphics.html
The fastest gaming card available is a 8800GT? Seriously, WTF. (Quadro cards are more for graphical design/modeling than gaming)
"For motion graphics, 3D modeling, rendering, or animation, you?ll need the greater graphics horsepower offered by the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 memory and latest-generation NVIDIA GPU technology." -- Update your page apple, you mean 2 generations old right? 9xxx has already come and gone!

Anyway, it's nice you can run windows natively on the new macs, but it's not close to being a serious competitor in the gaming market.

Oh, and...

Your computer comes with a nVidia graphics card? WHOP DE FUCKIN DO every reasonably high end desktop/laptop has a ati or nvidia graphics card. What matters is weather it's just the dregs of 2 gen old technology.... oh screw it these people never learn

I use a Macbook, but they are not a gaming computer the only game i run on it is WOW and that is only because it is my only computer. If your thinking Mac for gaming you'll need the top end AUS$3500 model. It works fine for gaming but thats it fine. Like it'll do because i use a console for my real gaming. If you play games on computer just get rid of vista and use the previous software.

First Post on Escapist. Mainly because I hate Mac vs Windows arguments.

If you game on Computers, then stick to Windows. Mac get little to no support for any titles that do get ported to it. If you just want a general use computer, then get what suits your preference, but I suggest trying out a Mac as some place like Best Buy or a Mac Store. In general, Macs are less flexible than Windows and Open source Linux/Unix PCs (Mac OS is Unix Based). Less user serviceable parts, harder to upgrade the Mac Desktops, and less available applications.

I'm a member on a mostly Mac forum so I have really nothing bad to say about its users or it, but some users can be truly pretentious and so can the Mac/Apple ADs. OS wise, it is well coded and runs nicely, but their marketing is a pain in the arse.

On the "bang for the buck" aspect, non Apple PCs are the way to go. More and better hardware for less. A standard Mac Book will cost 1700-2000 USD, for that amount of money I can buy an HP or Compaq computer with more computing power. If I pay more than 2000 USD to a company that specifically makes high end gaming/productivity laptops, I will have a system that will last for years.
I can speak from experience though that Old Macs at least are made to last. I still have a Pre-PPC Motorola based Mac (Performa 630 CD Model) that I have neglected since time immemorial but it still runs extremely well whenever I care to boot it up.

Writing this from the following 4 year old $1000 when it first came out laptop.
Dell Inspiron 1300
1.4GHz Intel Celeron M
2 GB 667MHz RAM
Intel GMA 915- 96MB VRAM
160 GB HDD- upgraded from a 40
16x DVD RW +/- Drive
15" Screen
Windows XP SP3/Ubuntu Linux

Which incidentally can still play games (oldies but goodies), run Stardock apps to add desktop extras, and still do full media production. Even 3D graphics in Softimage XSI, only thing I'm hurting on is playing new games, and doing 3D renders, but then again a Render Farm is better for that. Not saying Windows is greater than Mac, but it does what I need it to and fits my needs. So in the end, get what will fit your needs, purpose and preference.

Macs are great if you're into editing movies, Photoshop, and all of that fun media stuff. But if you're not going to be messing with that often, stick with PC.
I quote this and move on.

I've used both Macs and PCs extensively, and I can say that Macs are the most overrated machines on the planet. People who say that editing movies, Photoshop and such are easier on Macs are talking out their asses, as thats basically just what Apple says in their adverts. Their interface is not more user friendly (again, a myth put forward by Apple), hardly anything works on it, they aren't noticeably faster and they do bloody crash. In fact, I found the Mac crashed more than my PC. Actually, my PC crashes once in a blue moon, so everyone complaining that their PC crashes all the time should get it checked out.

If you're a mac user and realize that a lot of the extra money you paid for your mac went into design and shininess, that's fine with me. Some people just want shiny stuff that does a limited amount of things well, and while I'm not one of them, it's your money to do with as you please.
But please don't try to convince anyone that your mac has any flexibility when it comes to what you can do with it. You're a slave to Apple and what they think you can/should do with their OS. If the open source community cares about Macs, they sure aren't very vocal about it. The second you install Windows to play games (or for any reason), you're no longer a Mac user, you're a PC user, and you get all the bugs, viruses, open-source software, games, joy and sorrow that comes with that territory.
