*Warning contains major spoilers for the whole of the Mass Effect Series. Seriously be sure because even this post will spoil large parts of 2 and 3*

Commander Shepard is one kickass dude (or ladydude), but even Shepard couldn?t take on Sovereign, The Collectors or the Reapers without a loyal squad behind him (or her).
Shepard?s legacy has come to an end (inb4 DLC or ME4) and his squad mates are stranded either on earth or some random planet. So who were those squad mates that you talked to every time you had a spare minuet and right now you?re hoping that they survived the fight for Earth. Now on the other end of the scale who are the squad mates that you don?t care about and right now you?re struggling to recall?

My Top 3 Squad Mates:

Legion was my favourite squad mate in the Mass Effect series. I still can?t even figure out why I like him so much, when I first met him I thought he was pretty cool looking, but there wasn?t anything else that grabbed me originally. Over time though I think he grew on me, as I took him round the universe seeing people openly threatening him when he posed no threat to them. On Tali?s mission people flipped their shit and at the time I could understand, but after you see how the Geth began in ME3, Legion should have been scared. I liked him in ME2, but seeing how aggressive the Quarians were in ME3 and despite this Legion was still offering peace. No matter what was thrown at him Legion just wanted peace with the creators and to turn his race from slaves to people.

First of all he?s a Krogan. Nuff said.
I thought Wrex was a well-rounded character. I found him likable throughout all the games. His jokes and the fact he was a badass but still cared about life was what made him my second favourite character.

I?m pretty sure he?s going to be on some people?s least favourite lists, but for me I wanted to do anything but throw him out the airlock. Liara would never just shut up about how brilliant and intelligent the protheans were so I got a decent kick out of Bioware sticking is a solider instead of the chosen one. I took him on most missions to get his view on things because he had seen it happen before and he provided some of my favourite bits of dialog in all the games. What really hit home for me was when he tells you about his squad. He tells you how his squad was indoctrinated one by one and he had to kill them all and that?s why he became so ruthless. He tells you how you?ve given him hope for the universe that he had lost so long ago. I totally understand why people hate him, but for me he showed what happens when you let war get to you.

My Bottom 3 squad mates:

I played Mass Effect 1 at a friend?s house and he told me to ignore her because she was boring and focus on Kaidan. So I did. When I got the chance to buy Mass Effect 2 I used the interactive comic to save Ashley and boy did I regret it. The whole not being able to trust me in 3 just pissed me off. Garrus has no problem trusting me, hell even Tali had her doubts, but she still trusted Shepard. Throughout 3 she just seems to whine and complain. When Garrus asked me if I could have shot her, I couldn?t say yes fast enough.

Oh man I found her boring. If only she had been more like Thane? Unfortunately she was a dull character, had dull lines and a dull mission. I?m sure she wasn?t that bad but when I was trying to recall teammates I completely forgot about her.

Jacob could have been really interesting, a guy coming to terms that he might be with the wrong guys, but no just generic solider. Everything about him was just generic.
Overall I found all the men baring Jacob and James to be interesting. Thane, Garrus, Grunt, Joker, Mordin even Zaeed, but for me the women didn?t really interest me. EDI or Samara were properly my favourites, and they only interest me because of EDI becoming a person and learning about Samara?s strict Justica code.

Hey now, I liked the heist you get to pull off with Kasumi! And her phantom punch or whatever was an AMAZING ability! I wouldn't rank her at the top of my list, but I'd certainly not put her down at the bottom. :p

My top 3:

Legion, it's a damn shame you only get him for like, 3 missions tops.

Liara, gots ta have mah sexay blue chick. She's just too cute and adorable to resist!

Begrudgingly: Garrus, I say "begrudgingly" because I hate that there's so many fan boys/girls for him. Yeah, he's a good squadmate. Yeah, he functions as your renegade barometer. But for me he was just a good hand-of-god killer of a squadmate. Hook him up with a badass sniper rifle and watch as he one-shots everyone in his sights.

Bottom 3:

Jacob: He's just an utterly forgettable tool of a character. I, like I imagine most other people, never touched the guy except for the very beginning of the game when you have to use him and his loyalty mission.

Ashley: Just never really had a use for her, though that might change once I get some more playthroughs of ME 3 under my belt, at least they made her a little prettier to look at. But in ME 1.........why bother with Ashley when you've got Wrex?

Kaiden: Just never really liked the guy, might be because he reminded me too much of Carth Onasa from the KotOR series and Carth was probably my least-played character from those games.

Top 3.

1. Jack. I don't care what anyone says I likes me a ***** sometimes. If that lass was real she'd eat me alive and, to be perfectly honest, i'd smother myself in gravy and yell "MUNCH AWAY *****". Plus, she's quite amusing.

2. Garrus. Probably one of the more over used of answers but it;s true. He's been with me for 3 games and it's been a giggle.

3. Tali. She's like the little sister that always follows you around.

Sly sneak in of 4. Space Hamster because, well, it's a hamster ... in space.

Bottom 3.

1. Jacob. If he had any less personality he'd be a cardboard cut out.

2. Legion. It's "Commander Shepard". Get it the right way round you damn machine. "we are Geth" no, no you are irritating.

3. Samara. Because she's so damn serious all of the damn time. Crack a smile you miserable spawner of sex killers.

I always have trouble choosing my top 3. My gut says Garrus, Tali, and Liara. But then I remember Thane, and Wrex, and Mordin, and Legion, and Javi-oh for fucks sake!

Least favorites are easier. Ashley (oh, so you have a chip on your shoulder because your grand-pappy surrendered to some Turians? Um... boo hoo I guess.) Jacob (dull dull so, fucking, dull.) and Morinth (I, just who in their right mind would choose Morinth? Seriously?)

My top 3:
1. Mordin - I could not resist talking with Mordin Solus. Just about everything he said was deep, interesting, but also unique. I felt like I really was talking to an alien genius.

2. Garrus - Yeah, overused, but whatever. There is no Shepard without Vakarian.

3. Legion - Another one I could not resist talking to. I felt like I was getting an untold new perspective on the universe. It was amazing.

And bottom 3:

1. Samara/Morinth - So damn boring. Seriously. I found every conversation with either of them to be so incredibly dull.

2. Kaidan/Ashley - Let's face it, they're basically the same character. The exact same thing happens to either of them no matter what. Sure, one's a xenophobe and the other's just boring, but they're essentially the same. I give Kaidan a slight leg up because he's the only way to get Reave in Mass Effect 3.

3. Jacob - Not only did I find him totally useless, but he's just so boring. He does get one point for being the only character in ME2 to really give Shepard a chance to say how she feels, but that means romancing him, which is a snore. Spoiler: Especially considering his lame moving-on in ME3.

Top 3:

Mordin was probably my favourite character in the entire series. He was funny, he was smart and he was also pretty handy in a fight aswell. He had a really great backstory and was a focus of my two favourite missions in the series, his loyalty mission in 2 and the genophage mission in 3.

Wrex was my second favourite, again he tied into the genophage story which was great. He had real character and he was an all round awesome badass.

Legion was also extremely interesting, all of the missions he was involved in were awesome and getting to look at the history of both the geth and the quarians was extremely satisfying.

Honourable mentions go to Grunt, also a badass but not quite as good as Wrex. Liara was great too, i admit some small part of me wanted to somehow end the game on some nice planet with lots of blue babies, also her singularity is fucking amazing. Thane is pretty awesome too but i never really used him in my squad though.

Also Jack, i thought she was a bit boring in 2 (they tried wayyy to hard to make her seem like an edgy ice queen) but they really did improve her character in 3, i just wish i saw more of her.

Bottom 3:

Ashley/Kaiden Both had some interesting back stories but unfortunately they were both utter dicks in both 2 and 3.

Jacob.. Oh my god was he boring. The fact that he cheats on you in 3 if you hook up with him in 2 is pretty interesting but other than that *yawn*

Samara was pretty boring as well. She could have been great but her lawful good code and complete lack of emotive output made her kind of dull.

Best;

1) Garrus. He gets 3 games to interact with and is in such a awesome bromance with Shepard it almost hurts. I regard bottle shooting with him on the Citadel as one of the best moments in ME3.

2) Mordin. I really loved how dynamic this character was. He was funny, deep, even sad at moments. That and he gets a absolute crowning moment of badassery in ME3, resolving his character arc in a satisfying arc.

3: Tali. It's the voice, I have a thing for scandinavian accents. But beside that she also get's a character arc, and is a companion for 3 games. Especially in ME2 she actually got me to care about the Quarian conflicts. She's just low because she was incredibly boring in ME1.

worst:

1: Samara/Morinth. How do you make a Bisexual Psychic Space Samurai-or-Vampire uninteresting? They are not the worst characters, but I really wish they were more interesting then they are.

2: Jacob

3: Ashley/Kaiden

Haven't played ME3, but it's hard enough with the options of 1&2 to pick both top 3 and bottom 3.

Top 3
1. Garrus. My right hand in all things ME. Other party member doesn't even matter. Me and Garrus got this shit, yo.
2. Thane. The romance-option dialogue as FemShep is fantastic. Unsent letter found in Shadowbrokers lair just makes it better.
3. Legion. I liked bending my brain around their way of thinking. The whole semi-autonomous aspect of Geth fascinated me. Would have liked more input from them in earlier missions. Shame you get them so late.

Bottom 3
1. Jacob. Swear to God, I played ME2 twice (one male/female Shep) and a month later a friend asked me if I'd ever put Jacob in my party. I had no idea whom he was talking about. He had to explain he meant the completely uninteresting Cerberus meatshield you start with.
2. Jack. Chill the fuck out. Nobody's life is awesometacular. Less complaining about the past; more working on the future, k? I just dislike her entire attitude to life.
3. Tali. Oh, sweet monkey Jesus, make it stop. That voice. That goddamn voice. And her endless stream of complaints and daddy issues. She's the only teammate whose Loyalty mission I failed on my honest playthrough (as in "what would I do?" instead of "what's the best option?"). I just hate everything about her. No use in my party, don't want her on my ship and if I ever buy ME3, I'll replay ME2 again and make sure she dies.

As I started in two, I liked Liara, for she knew more of the universe than the other characters, meta and non.
Mordin was godly, and boss.
As well, Grunt was suitably ambiguously going to kill you, but with birth issues, for my taste. HEMINGWAY REFERENCE WOOOO
Jack was nice, in dialogue, because awesome Shep caught her choice of words and solved all her problems with his soft, tender, manhood. But they actually wrote it well, and I was surprised.

Who'd I hate?
Hard to say; Jacob hating seems odd, but they could certainly have filled his slot with a more engaging character. I find that he disrupted the trauma conga line, and kept the story a touch grounded. And Bioware is a love of my life, when it comes to character.
I hated Carth Onasi.
But, since I only got 3's Kaidan, I can't say I dislike him. Ashley was just kinda there, in comparison.
I only got 2's Garrus, and, apart from being ambiguously something with Shep, in the past, and being as awesome in combat as most other team members, he did absolutely nothing. He got better by three, but in two, he was my least favorite.
I just hated Udina. And Cyborg Ninja. They were there for arbitrary conflict. I was dissapoint, as they got in the way of my triumph, only to die under circumstances that could well have happened earlier. And darn well should have.

top to bottom

Garrus - character that is really awesome and you see him evolve throughout the series, plus he's a killa.

Wrex - my god is he awesome. such a deep character! plus, killa.

Mordin - great character but not so much on the battle side. love talking with him.

Legion - good character, inteteresting perspective. lacked "meatbag", though :'(

Grunt - good fighter, yet he's a fuckin psycho. i like him though.

Thane - he's a badass but only that. I admire the guy, but not a fan.

Tali - fun girl

Jacob - likeable, dull, creepy

Zaeed - didn't like that creep

James - quite an interesting and funny guy.

Liara - her voice pissed me off as hell. also, boring.

Kasumi - so.darn.dull. jeez. obsessed.

Kaidan - weird dude. got problems much?

Ashley - definitely got problems. annoying girl.

Samara - too stiff for my tastes. good fighter.

Jack - annoyed the shit out of me but well.

And number zero, the worst squadmate ever is...

MIRANDA. That *****! I hate her she's so annoying, obnoxious, attention-seeking whore. Stupid shit with half a brain. Sole casualty of suicide mission. bitchbitchbitch

In no particular order, since that seems somehow wrong...

Mordin, for being by turns brilliant, cruel, funny and obssessively logical. He didn't look like a badass, but by the Goddess he was one. His story and character development were brilliantly executed, and the Tuchanka mission in ME3 just brought it all home. Awesome. Besides, you've got to love him for his Gilbert and Sullivan recitals.

Garrus, for all the reasons everyone else has given, basically. He's with you in all three games, so you get to see his personality grow. He's Space Batman, and he knows it. Even though I play an Infiltrator, I still ended up taking Garrus with me a lot, on account of his sheer swesomeness. He also gets some of the most straight faced yet hilarious lines in the game. Reach and flexibility, the banter in 3 between him and Joker, the game of one-upmanship with Vega. Yeah, it was always worth bringing him with me, just to see what he'd come out with.

And you know what? Sue me, I'm going for Kaidan. I'm one of those weird people who didn't find him whiny or boring, and actually thought he was a bloody decent guy. Again, the skills he had worked well with my Sheps' setup, so he came on most missions with me. OK, he threw a bit of a bitchfest on Horizon, but in it's way, it worked. Not everyone was going to be fine and dandy with what Shep was up to, and that was the role he played in the story, to question you. It actually had me worried that he'd still hate me by the time ME3 rolled round, so whatever Bioware did, the man got to me. It's probably obvious by now, but yes, I did the romance path with this guy, and really enjoyed it. It was a bit awkward, but also very sweet. Damnit, I'm a sucker for this sort of thing.

Honourable mentions though to Wrex and Thane.

There's not many characters that I didn't like, but Jacob can go swing for it. Didn't like him at all, though it looks like I'm not the only one. I found his personal arc was pretty boring, and his skill mix was forgettable - Don't think I ever used him apart from when there was no other choice. Plus it made me angry that whenever FemShep went to talk to him on the Normandy, she would always adopt this flirty pose and tone with him. Just... No, FemShep. NO.

I'm not fired about Ashley either. But then she might have endeded up a bit explodey in ME1, so it's not as if I've had a lot of exposure to her. Even when she was around, I never really used her - Kaidan was always a better complement to my Shep's skills, plus he's a hottie.

Whoah whoah whoah there, buster. Tali does not - I repeat - does not - have a Scandinavian accent.
Sorry, it's just that, as someone actually from Scandinavia (Norway to be precise, but I've visited Sweden and Denmark plenty), misunderstandings like this bother me.

As for my list...
1. Garrus
2. Mordin
3. Tali

Bottom 3
1. Jack
2. Samara
3. Jacob

1: Garrus, the whole reason my first playthrough of ME3 was with "Amanda Shep" so I could we what happened between her and Garrus
2: Tali, in three words "Emergency Induction Port"!
3: Mordin, he is the very model of a scientist Salarian!
4: Wrex, cause he's Wrex! (No other explanation is needed)
5: EDI, she's hilarious and the Joker/EDI love story was brilliant.

bottom 5

1: Miranda: put your arse away love, your supposed to be genetically perfect yet you get knocked out everytime some one coughs!
2: Jacob: Boring boring boring!
3: Ashley: Xenophobic whiny annoying!
4: James: unnecessary and if you're gonna have a Puerto Rican character hire a Puerto Rican!
5: Miranda: I know but she really bugs the hell out of me!

I may not have played three, yet, but there's just so little amount of new squad mates that I doubt that would change the list dramatically once I finish it.

I'm also gonna pull a page out of Yahtzee's book and mix my top and bottom together. Starting from number three:

Top 3: Garrus/Tali

Yeah, okay, I might be cheating a bit. But if it helps, Garrus goes into number three and Tali in four. But I mixed them together for the same reason: the mere fact that they were in Mass Effect 2. They were not really my favorites in the first Mass Effect. Those title belong to Wrex and... well just Wrex. However, when I found them in two, I was sooo happy to see them. When I was starting my first game, I felt so lonely without my old squad mates. All I had were Jacob and Miranda [small](who I'll get to later)[/small]. And when I was continuing to grow my squad, I still felt uncomfortable. I got to know everyone in my ship, and it felt weird having to start from scratch with everyone else. Then I bumped into Garrus. Then I was happy again. Then I found Tali. Goddam, I was the happiest Shepard in the galaxy. So they get so high on this list for mere sentimental value. That counts!

Bottom 3: Jacob

Oh, Jacob. I felt so sorry for you, I really did. You had the potential of being really cool, but you just had to fall into a generic soldier character slot. Not even a stereotypical black character, just a boring soldier character. [small](Not that I'm saying that it's good to have a stereotypical black character. It's just... uh... You know, let's move on. <_<)[/small]

Top 2: Wrex

Need I say more?
...
Wait, I do? Crap. Okay, well, the fact that he was a wise brute that had great war stories that were fun to listen to and Krogan just bumped him high on my list. I figure you were all put the same situation. :p

Bottom 2: Zaeed

I just felt like Bioware was trying to hard to make Zaeed a full on badass. But he just came off as boring a one sided. Bleh.

Top 1: Mordin

Just... watch:

Bottom 1: Miranda

Oh god, I hated her. Seriously, only put in the game for sex appeal. Genetically made for perfection. Seriously, with a body type like that and heels like those, how the fuck to you move from place to place without tipping over? Especially in the heat of battle! Ugh. No me gusta. xP

Top 3
Legion: He welded a piece of N7 armour over the hole in my heart...but seriously one of the least crazy people in ME2's roster, by far the most polite and his views are by far the most alien but equally some of the most understandable and acceptable.

Mordin: My second favourite squad mate introduced in ME2 and from what you see it just makes me wish he was around for longer in ME3.

Liara: Really liked her character developement from the first to the third game, and personally she just seemed to 'feel' like the most fitting romance option.

Bottom 3
Grunt: He has a pretty standard Krogan mentality which Ijust find boring. Wrex has charm and wits making him different from your bog standard Krogan, Grunt just feels like an in-game stereotype to me.

Samara: I get it you have a code, is there anything else to your personality? Seriously Morinth may be a sex-murder obsessed psychopath but this ridiculous lawful good act Samara has going makes the loyalty quest sway towards Morinth.

Miranda: I hate this arrogant ***** so much. Theres a conversation in ME2 where you can bring up that in me1 cerberus researched thorian creepers, husks and rachni as weapons, to which she does dismisses that they could have been useful and cerberus did nothing wrong. At this point the game annoyed me by not giving me the options of listing over all of cerberus' other atrocities mentioned in me1: akuze (especially is Shep was sole survivor), the luring of admiral kohoku's marines into a thresher maw and throwing Kohoku himself in a cage with one of the afformentioned experiments. Seriously wanted to just have a paragon option where I listed those off then relieved her of command and put garrus as my number 2 and a renegade where I list them off as I throw her out of an airlock. Still atlest she gets some humility *****-slapped into her in ME3.
