I consider it to be one of my favorite films of all time. The fact that it combined so many things into a single cohesive whole is one of the things I love about it: It's a film with an intense intellect and a dark message, but the body of a live-action film with dynamic slow-mo gunplay and hand-to-hand combat. The fact that it takes so many conventions of anime and perfectly translates them into live-action makes it work brilliantly. From a personal standpoint, the thing that cements it as one of my more fondly remembered experiences is the fact that it was made in part by one of my personal heroes.
I couldn't have said it better myself.

Can you believe that Will Smith actually turned down the role of Neo for that...other movie he did?

Yes I fully aware that it's someone a dated film now-

Anyway I still think it's a good film overall despite of some opinion made at 2 and 3.
Hmmm. Not sure what the 8110 was, but the 'Matrix' phone was the 7110.

I still have two of them and they still feel much better to hold and type on than any of the new touchy-feely ones. Plus, the one-button cover release still works like a charm when maintained properly. You just don't find that build quality these days.

OT: I still like that first Matrix movie, I consider it to be a somewhat pompous and shallow thing, but that does not make it bad in any way whatsoever. It brought new images onto the screen, and it's the first proper, Max Payne-esque Bullet Time sequence I believe I've seen on a cinema screen instead of a computer screen. The Wacho wackos did a splendid job. I also like their 'Bound' one.

I can't handle Matrix 2: Party in the Zion Cave or Matrix 3: Bang Bang Boom Shamalayan of Doom. They make me sick and misanthropic.

I love it. It's a action movie with a hero's journey aspect that doesn't get caught up in the faults of either of those things. It just works as a movie.

It's not bad, and it illustrates some basic philosophical concepts pretty well. The action's also pretty nice. I was never that into it, though.

I've always wondered what would happen if Neo took both pills. I recall that there was an XKCD comic about it, but I've never been fully satisfied with that interpretation.

It's an entertaining movie with some well done action scenes. It also brings up the concept of reality but it's not the first movie to do this, some examples being Blade Runner and Total Recall.

It's a fun popcorn flick with the depth of a thimble. It's a deep movie for shallow people, basically, but it's pretty and has some nice kung fu.

And in the end, isn't that the greatest truth of all?

The Matrix is one of my favorite movies and the sequel has the best car chase that I've ever seen.

I was waiting for that one. The obligatory movie critic comment. :p

What do you recommend then. What is something interesting and thought provocative to watch?

It's a great movie. There are so many interesting and awesome action scenes that leave your jaw hanging because of how well they are done. I haven't seen a movie that comes even close to it's quality since 2005.

I really liked the second movie as well even though it felt a bit slow at times, and the third is alright, good music you need to here.

I absolutely love it, and love the sequels as well even with their rough edges. One of my favourite series of all time, if not maybe the favourite.

Beyond just the quality of the movie(s), I also still feel the first Matrix film had possibly the best marketing of any movie I can remember.

Go back and watch the matrix, and just pay attention to the cinematography - The positioning of the camera, how the different shots take place and how the audience gets taken on a literal roller coaster ride through the whole thing.

The cinematography and camerawork alone makes that movie fucking incredible.

I think it's still fantastic, despite it being so often imitated later on, and wonder why they never made any sequels ever. No sequels at all. Nuh-uh.

I feel extremely sorry for those that think the car chase in this series is remotely good compared to other movie car chases.

A really entertaining cyberpunk fairy tale.
I liked the visuals and both worlds.
Definitely one of the most quotable movies I've seen, a lot of memorable scenes and dialogues.
The hero is a bit stiff but it has an awesome villain (special props for introducing Hugo Weaving to the world, dude is awesome in everything he does).
The action scenes are good, especially the fights. I like the way the fights are edited, everything is visible, no annoying quick cuts or shaky cam. The camera angles are all planned out, a lot of shots look like paintings.
Can't deny the impact it had on popular culture in the early 2000's. So many people ripped it off, so many parodied it, so many people started to wear trench coats and sunglasses.

I also liked Reloaded.
The action scenes are awesome. I think that when the Wachowskis got 300 million $ to make the sequels, they just wrote all of their jerk off fantasies that they couldn't do in the first one because of the budget constraints.
They actually built a mile of highway for that car chase in the middle.
I like that every character has their own life philosophy and the conflicts in the movie are basically conflicts between their philosophies.
Still lots of memorable scenes and quotable moments.
Although not as good as the first one, it's still good and a great set up for the last movie.

Revolutions however wasn't that great.
The fight in Zion was ok but pretty forgettable. The entire movie was kind of forgettable, to be honest. The only real memorable scene was the Dragonball fight at the end and that pissed me off because of how it played out and especially how it ended.
The resolution was disappointing (the big twist that was hinted at in Reloaded - reality with Zion and the machines is just another level of the matrix - didn't happen).

Eh, most of the "depth" is merely correlations between Eastern religious concepts and a semi-cyberpunk Western aesthetic. In many ways it can be compared to Star Wars.

I really like it's aesthetic and how it's basically a "Greatest Hits" of action flicks.

It's alright. The sequels are utter shit though.

I really liked the premise, and as I saw the original more and more, the bad acting got to me more and more.

I agree with most of the people here and will restate my opinion of the first one is a great movie.
I don't know if it's "classic" material, but it really just works.

The following films were terrible.

It's a very enjoyable movie, and probably a notch smarter than typical action fare. I think that the hero is faced with a choice between edging around the ledge of a tall building and being captured by the bad guys and chooses the latter alone was quite the striking script choice, and of course the visual style would be borrowed by video games and cinema alike for another decade and more.

It's just a pity it's the first of a rather lackluster trilogy.

The Matrix is one of my favourite films, because of the philosophical aspects of its universe and the brilliantly choreographed action scenes. I don?t think it?s overrated, but then again, that?s probably because I like it, and the definition of ?overrated? has apparently changed to ?things I dislike that others like?. It?s not as ?original? as most people think, but it?s fun and does genuinely get you thinking a little bit, which is what?s important to enjoying a film.

And I love Hugo Weaving?s performance as Agent Smith. Plus, it had Trinity before she became Neo?s whiny clinger-on. I mean, the sequels are decent and still worth a watch, but they don?t have the same innovative spark as the first film (as well as the fact that I just didn?t care for any of the new characters in the sequels, because they were all bland and uninspiring fillers).

I understand. Keanu Reeves fit the role of Neo because it didn't require that much acting prowess in the first place; Neo was just a walking "The One" archetype of the isolated tech geek who'd gotten in over his head and finally learned "his true fate" in the final battle. But in the rest of his films, he's not that good. The good films he's in are good because of the films themselves, not him.
