So today I was thinking about my current project in Minecraft. I'm currently building a huge naval base in and thought about making a thread on this forum in which I asked for suggestions on how to go about starting it. Then I realized how selfish that would seem and the life of the thread would be next to nothing. Then, it hit me, why not start a thread in which people can show off their projects, ask for suggestions, or collaborate ideas! Unless there's a rule against it, in which case, I guess the thread should be deleted or something.

THIS IS NOT A THREAD ASKING ABOUT PEOPLE'S OPINION OF MINECRAFT, IF YOU DON'T LIKE MINECRAFT, THEN PLEASE, REFRAIN FROM POSTING, THANK YOU :D

So I'll start out, I'm planning on building a huge base and would like some input on how I should start. I've got a nice bay in which I can change into a docking station, and some small mountains I can convert into watch towers, I just can't decide where to start, any suggestions?

no idea... I always start playing, make a base and then inevitably get bored.

Once class has ended I wanna make the entire Kanto region from pokemon in it. I know someone out there has already done this, but fuck it. I wanna do one.

I haven't played Minecraft in a bit. It's an amazing game, albeit one I only play when I randomly dream about an amazing building and decide to log in and build it. Which is why I have a ton of castles, a massive tower with a pagan cross and a huge treehouse.

Thats the spirit haha. I tried it once, then the server I was collaborating on went down and I haven't seen it since D:

Yeah, I think thats the only true downside to the game. Its not one you can just log into and expect to have fun (although there are rare occasions in which that happens), you gotta have things you want to build in mind.

if you dig out a small cave in the mountains, you can cover the walls, get some wood for a door, use the stone for a better pick, and if you like, you could start on your towers using the cobblestone you collect. (Note: don't forget, Beds change your spawn point.)

I like to farm sugar cane for bookcases. :p when i first played minecraft, it was a race for me to get obsidian to make a portal, and once I went to the nether, I was very impressed. With update 1.6 coming soon, we will get the nether in SMP and I will make my house there. Until then, I have an underground house, well hidden by many puzzles I set up. EX. you go down in my primary cave, and there are paintings. you walk through these, and you come to 3 rooms. (Lapis,Gold, And Diamond.) These are all completely dark, and there is a cloth floor linking them. you go to the right corner, take out the cloth, and go down. Then you see my house. its still in development because I'm still trying to make my LGD rooms, but its going well.

You're going to need furnaces. Lots of furnaces. So many furnaces, in fact, that they might compose an entire outer wall of one of your ships.

.No.

I was considering making a huge blocked off path to the center of earth, making the path out of glass, and digging out everything under it.

I've had minecraft for nearly 3 weeks and I'm still trying to get some lighting in my gloomy cave. 3 times I made I made good progress on the basic resources I needed (flint, coal, and iron) when (1) I got lost and committed suicide, (2) I got lost deep underground and literally spent me 2 stone pickaxes and had to alt+F4, (3) and I tunneled my way under a lava deposit.

I guess I'm really, really proud of the fact that I leveled the entire island on which I spawned and created this sweet ass jacuzzi. I haven't touched them game since last week.

Hmm, alright, so I should start with the towers first? Alright, that would work. Its definitely a starting point :p

That sounds amazing, haha.

If you're having problems seeing, I suggest you turn up your gamma a little, just enough so you can see clearly. Its what I do, especially when I dig caves. I guess it takes the fun out of the game, but getting enough torches to place without any idea how many you need is really frustrating :(

It took a lot of time. it was mainly because my other houses kept getting destroyed. First: Obsidian bunker type deal with lava underneath glass floor w/ glass roof. Someone took it apart and turned it into a railroad. My second, built 1 block under the max height, For placement of Beds, Furnaces, etc With a mossy cobby tower got Tnt'd So I had To make This...
:( so, yeah,, its essentially a self defense mechanism. Its so deep underground, I hit Iron ore. :O

:O, I don't build really anything under sea level. I only go into the ground when I'm branch mining. I'm more of a, build-into-a-mountain-and-then-shape-it-to-my-specifications kinda guy

I'd start with the towers personally, they sound like an easy thing to get done quickly which helps to feel accomplished for the harder parts.

Show our projects? I'm game.

Right now I'm working on a project highlighting the corner to corner shape of the voxels. I noticed that a lot of Minecraft designs revolve around the use of the straight on view of voxels as a box and I wanted to explore alternative designs.

To that end I'm making this.

I call it the Diamond Fiend Trap and the basic idea is a simple pit trap and chamber below with a few nice ocean vistas. The above picture is what it looks like on the surface.

Here are a couple shots of the underwater chamber "trap" part of the build which still needs to be dressed and fully excavated.

I've started developing a nice little mythology for the Diamond Fiend too. He's rooted in the concept of the player bing a sort of demi-god, with the ability to mold the landscape to his will, capture lava in a bucket, etc. And if the player is a demi-god then the DF is a Minecraft scientist. Accomplishing what the player does with rigorous study and arcane methodology: trying to split the Voxel, classify the different types of mobs rationalizing their odd behavior, and other such fanciful things.

I have a simple but cozy house, on the beach where I can watch a pretty beautiful sunrise

[HEADING=1]PICTURES - Have a peek :3[/HEADING]

I just enjoy the little things in life, not a fan of gigantic projects.

Oooh, I like it. The texture pack is amazing as well, which one is it?

Will try to put up pictures later: my circle of friends and I have created some truly stupendous things.

The most impressive thing we've built in terms of size is a very gigantic underwater city (complete with a sunken scale version of Stonehenge, which is fairly easy to do given the 1m x 1m x 1m block dimensions). The city took about two months of roughly five people working more or less constantly (inventory hacks were used and the map was edited to make enough space underwater for the base, but all of the building was by hand). I also had a series of riddle rooms linked by teleporters (one was a chessboard where every square was a teleporter, which took HOURS to set up) that lead to a huge underground castle built inside a massive cave I dynamited out by hand complete with a massive cathedral face (and corresponding interior) carved into the wall of the cavern where it protruded above the interior entrance (which was a large lava pit with a very narrow bridge a la LotR), but since we no longer use Runecraft, the location is sadly lost to me.

Also, we've recently been experimenting with self-building/repairing bridges and buildings using pistons.

Far and away the most impressive thing however is a setup a friend made in a shallow lake with cleverly hidden holes in the sand. When a series of switches are flipped in the right order in a control room, skeletons from a nearby dungeon are held in place in chutes and then loosed through the holes. They float up to the surface while Moonlight Sonata starts playing in an underground music room. The effect is absolutely breathtaking - observers just start hearing haunting music as a huge swarm of skeletons start climbing out of the water.

I've been nagging him to make a video, so I'll link it when it's done.
