We are living in the modern era, yes? Then why the focus on "treating women right" and "putting his woman before himself"? In a world this big, at least a percentage of the gentlemen must be gay. In which case, you'd have to say "treating his man right" and "putting his man before himself".

Just saying...

But, my image of a "gentleman" is not the "please walk on my coat so you don't get wet feet" type of guy. It's more of an educated, witty fellow... with no real predefined rules of engagment for social situations and a desire to have a good time with nice people.

Today a gentleman is a tall black man standing on the corner yellin "HEY YO GIRL LET ME GET YO NUMBAH!!!" to most people any way but a real gentleman has manners puts the women before himself and isn't an over violent prick with saging pants with a belt that dosen't fit and the only thing that holds it up is the efin MAC-10 on the side of the hip!!!

Must: Be polite, be courteous, be presentable, be chivalrous, be intelligent, be compassionate, be witty, drink tea
Should: Be well dressed (Tux with tails is highly preferred), be cultured, be well spoken, be up on current events, be old-fashioned as well as progressive, be well traveled, be courageous, be wise, be optimistic, drink wine
That's a big list. I just want the all demanding 'tash, the pipe and a lifetimes membership to the hunting club. Tallyho!

Oh! I forgot to mention one 'Jolly should have a hat. Otherwise what would you take off when a lady enters, or tip when you bid someone good day?

You've disappointed me Necroswanson, tuxedos as everyday wear is the way of the future! But yeah, looking over the list I match pretty much all of those. See, it's not so hard Purps.

Oh! and one should say "Jolly good" occasionally.

Hmm, I do like the sounds oh Jolly Good.

Aside from being compassionate (to other humans),dressing in a Tux (as much as I'd like to), being well traveled, drinking wine and being wise, I match everything on that list. Oh, as long as you count Ice Tea instead of tea.

Oh, I've had someone tip their hat to me in the car instead of waving when I let them merge. It was awesome!

Naw, old gentlemen are sexist. See: Jonas Faulkner of The Phoenix Requiem webcomic. He's pretty much the epitome of a gentleman.

The Gentleman is a dying breed that will not survive beyond this generation...

It seems to me that there isn't a virtuous feminine role. 'Lady' is often paired with gentleman, but that involves dropping handkerchiefs and being submissive.

Also, Raurik, that is madness.

Madness? This IS- no I'm not going to say it.

Meh, women were too submisive in the early period. THen when the womens rights bandwagon came along, you people got violent! Seriosuly, there was bloodshed.

You cannot learn to be a gentleman - it is something you're born with. Breeding. Certainly, class, status, education, manners ... these certainly contribute. But at best it will give the sense of a gentleman - it will not make one.
