Probably the day my science fair project on thermal radiation placed behind the idiot kid who made a "volcano" out of clay, baking soda, and vinegar. That's not a science project, that's an art project.

Three weeks later, my parents separated and then divorced.

Coincidence? I'll never know for sure.

When my sister died. 15 minutes after she was born the doctor said she had a fist sized hole in her left lung, because the woman my dad was screwing at the time was hooked on hardcore drugs with him. She was alive long enough to be put in a baby dress and have her picture taken, which I still have.

I never went to the funeral...I always wanted a little sister.

You are young, the world has been kind to you...you will learn.

i can't think of a specific event, but the first day of middle school was the closest thing i can think of. If i had only known the things i was about to bare witness to and how they would change me, i might have felt a little different about that day.

When my mum's psycho ex best friend started messing with our lives. I had to grow up pretty quickly when that happened and it kinda made me realise that the world isn't as great as I thought it was. I think I was aboout 8 or 9.

My childhood slowly died over a long period of time.

EDIT: Actually, the thing that threw my childhood onto a lit bonfire was finding out my parents were drug addicts.

Probably the time that my Kindergarten teacher yelled at me for coloring my T-Rex red, and my stegosaurus blue. She told me that it was all wrong because dinosaurs were only earth tones, like brown and green, and that coloring them red and blue was downright stupid and childish. I got so angry at her that I screamed "BUT LAVA'S RED!!!", and she got pissed and held me in from recess for the rest of the week.

Or y'know, when I was twelve and realized that the "funny smelling room" at my mom's friend's house was where everyone was getting high as fuck.
That teacher is eeeeevil. Who the hell yells at a kindergartner for choosing a cool color on a dinosaur?!

We feel nostalgia for our child hood because of the holes in our memory.

As we age our earliest memories get fragmented in a way not unlike your hard drive.

We have pieces of broken code and our mind fills in the empty details. We then create an impossibly innocent and carefree image of our childhood. Over time this translates into a false sense of loss for something that never existed. Ironically this causes us to become more miserable as we age.

We visit doctors and receive prescriptions to calm us down but in the end the root cause remains and gets larger and larger. A shadow that looms over our solders constantly reminding of us of how useless we are.
Uh... wow. Thanks for that uplifting speech.

You sort of made my day go down the drain with that one.
That was the plan. :)

When I hit puberty and started hating my family, the main target of that hate being my hypocritical, obnoxious dad.

It was when I was 13 years old and I hear my sister and her boyfriend having sex.
I can't say I am any mad though. He gave me his xbox and old legos. In fact he still chills with my sister and i every now and then.
But the dead childhood part was a bit lame.

Twisted Metal Black, I played it once when I was nine and ended up beating the story with all the characters. When it was over, my innocence was nowhere to be found

Probably the September 11 attacks. I know, it makes me sound like Rudy Giuliani (ironic since I'm a very liberal person), but that was the first time I had to deal with the reality that there were evil people in the world today, as opposed to just hearing about, say, the Nazis in the past, and that they were able to act in such a manner.

The day my Mom told me she was thinking of divorcing my Dad... about an hour before I had to go to my first major job interview.

Yeah, I didn't do that great in the interview.

Happy ending though, they stayed together, and are closer than ever.

Either the time I lost my mom in the store. It drove me mad, and I have been slightly afraid of being alone ever since. This snowballed into other worries and nauseous moments throughout my life. I worry about every little thing, so bad that I don;t even wanna type about it now for fear of it getting in my mind again. Sorry.

Wow... I'm on the verge of crying just reading that. I'll try to remember this to keep my problems in perspective, I hope you're okay with that.

OT: It's still alive in some form, but it's sustained major injuries considering the fact that, well, I'm an adolescent. One of the bigger hits was discovering just how dysfunctional the American news media and government is; that happened to me a few years ago.

Also, reading this thread feels creepily voyeuristic, yet oddly compelling. Is that a bad thing?
