Its been around sense the beginning. The good old Nes had a lot of it. It is actually a key component in competitive games. But it is the single most anifun, aggravating, mind-numbingly frustrating thing that games throw at you. Im talking about stun locks.

You will NEVER EVER EVER EVER ......ever ever convince me otherwise. I find it to be the biggest dick move that games can employ. Normal stuns im fine with, its the ones that completely take control away from the player and force them to just sit there and do nothing while they watch their digital avatar gets killed, dropped down a pit, mobbed, and set upon by a pack of rabid killer rabbits.

Not only that but it makes often very simple tasks FAR more difficult than they should be. I was playin through Dragon Age 1 the other day when i got to that part where you had to find you companions in the Fade (during the mage tower). I got to the point where i was using a golem form to take one of the big darkspawn. This part took FOREVER because the bastard would just keep knocking me down over and over. It get to the point where i would just set the controller down and get a drink of water. I HAAAAAAATTTTTTEEEEE it when games do this. And not in a "well i really only dislike it" way, no as in a "i loathe it to my core" kind of way.

What are your thoughts on the matter. In short my thoughts are it is a very cheap, frustrating tactic that just seems to be put in there to lengthen game time, or shorten the gap between actual good players and sub-par ones (in the competitive games)

Sequels that start of with you losing all of your moves from the previous game, and basicly any death that is cheap.

Frankly, I'm willing to put up with it because it can be (and is often intended to be) turned to my advantage. In fact, early in the NES era, it was the precursor phenomenon to mercy invincibility, so there's that. Actually, I haven't seen it much in recent games...at least, not to the obnoxious extent you describe. Maybe I'm just playing the wrong games.

Besides, I play fighting games. Hitstun is a staple.

Not what the thread is asking.

Escort quests. Some escorts I can handle, for example the one in F.E.A.R, at least she didn't do anything. The worst are the ones where the the person you're escorting is dumber than a clump of shit and the enemies do 10x the amount of damage they usually do.

When Side missions become manditory to advance in the game.

Also when a good game gets a sequel and turns into a bad game

Heh, let's take this up a notch. The most aggravating thing in games is when you think a game is going to be alright and it was hyped out to be great...and then it's total shit. When the whole game is an aggravation and a disappointment, you've pretty much won right here.

Yesterday, I had this problem. In half life 2, going through Nova Prospekt I had to reload about 7 times over the course of 300 yards because Alex Vance ran right up to some dude with a shotgun and got her face removed.

OT: The Dragon Age knockdowns were pretty annoying. I hated them when I tried playing as a mage. Then when I got my act together and played as a dual wielding warrior I was all like zoom! run in ultra cool murder death before they can even see me raaaaaaaaarrrrrrrr!!!!!
