The most annoying and/or irritating 'collectibles' in a game...?

As much as I love GTA IV, those pigeons were a pain for the same reasons as people have already noted. One time, never again. It'd be nice if someone were to put a different twist on the collectables in a manner that makes them challenging to find, but not so much that you're having to scour every nook and cranny of the map for the last couple without the first clue where you're supposed to be looking.

I'm gonna have to jump on the bandwagon here and say Assassin's Creed (all of them, except Brotherhood which I haven't played yet). Flags, feathers, and templars, all scattered around at random (I think the total number of flags in 1 exceeded 100) with no rewards besides achievements/trophies. It got so boring to pick them all up that I just gave up. On the other hand Fallout 3 and Bioshock did them best. In Fallout, they gave you helpful stat upgrades. In Bioshock, they provided the backstory, making it even more tempting to just explore so I could just learn more about Rapture.

Surprised no one's said this, but the one that really twists my knickers are the al bhed translation thingies in FF10. It goes letter by damn letter. Are you kidding me? So then you get words with half the right letters and half the wrong letters and still no clue what these people are saying to you. Bad Squenix. Very very bad. Never found them all and came to hate the al bhed for speaking, not in their own language, but in gobstopping CODE. Screw you people with your spiral pupils. Your Blitzball team sucks anyway.
Those did suck pretty bad, especially since there are many in areas you can't get back to. Also the al bhed team probably should have recruited Brother since he was easily the best free agent around.

Assassins creed, not that the flags were practically hidden but there was over 400 of the damn things. The flags in the kingdom were the most annoying since you're probably going to miss one or 2 of those 100 flags and the area is big.
They also don't really do anything, they increase your sync bar but you can get max sync without it. Tho that might be a good thing because it makes flag hunting purely optional and you don?t miss out on anything if you don?t do it.

Alan Wake may be on on my top ten favorite games of all time but the thermos collecting go can go die in a fire

Anything in Donkey Kong 64.
You ninja'd me! But yeah, even though it's a mini-game, that one damn race mini-game with that stupid beetle, having to get 50 coins on a constant turning track with no guard rails and it makes you lose coins every time you bump into the beetle. Fuck you Rare for making me rage at you. I did that race so many times and I'd be right at the finish line but he always bolts ahead of me, every. time. Ugh... so much rage.

It has to be the 800 orbs in Crackdown.
I collected every single agility orb in both Crackdown 1 and Crackdown 2.
The faint orb sound will forever haunt my nightmares.

Enslaved's little orb things. I think this comic explains perfectly why they're annoying:
Didn't I read somewhere that having your brain set on fire can seriously affect your ability to find doodads?

So the repeat offenders here seem to be:

The Assassin's Creed flags/feathers
Crackdown's orbs
GTA4's pidgeons

May I add to the list, Metal Gear Solid 4 and those f***ing dogtags. Also honourable mention for the lambda's in Half-Life 2.

Not that I'm aware of but if that happened that would just seriously take the piss.

I once found at least 110 Golden Bananas in Donkey Kong 64.

I never found enough normal ones for the bosses of Crystal Caves and Creepy Castle.

That's one of the (admittedly many) games I'll never, ever beat. But that's not lack of motivation; that's actually not being able to beat it.
Heh, I had to follow the guide book from early on to beat that game. xP
Took me months just to beat that jack-in-the-box boss...

OT: Probably the Assassin creed flags, never bothered even trying to find all of them since it really wasn't worth the time.

The AC 1 flags werent so bad because I refused to get any of them until I had beaten the game and found a guide for them, and at least they have different sections for them. I'd say the worst was crackdown 1 and it's damn orbs....I still cant find them all.

Orbs orbs & more f'n orbs Crackdown 2 so many orb's it's just horrible especially the moving orbs.

Other then that I've never been bothered by collectibles most of them are quiet reasonable.
