What was the most annoying level you have ever encountered in a video game?

Pretty sure the official "most annoying level in gaming history" was the frickin' hover-bike level in Battle Toads. I can only imagine that the number of people who never beat that game specifically because they couldn't pass that level is up in the millions.

Every water level in existance! All of them , i have yet to find a good water level in videogames ( except in star fox 64). Water levels should die in a pit of fire.

Ever? Too many to count.

Recently? "Jasindra" in "Enclave" I've only played it 25 times now trying to get those last 20 gold pieces. >_<

Hydrocity Zone from Sonic 3 and Donkey Kong Country water levels are good.

Those are the exception though... and you spend most of Hydrocity Zone out of the water (unless you're bad).

Chapters 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19, 20, 21 and 22 of Uncharted 3. Those enemies can be real arseholes.

Yes god I bloody hated that level only ever finished it once and had hardly any lives left after very poor design choice.

Other annoying levels would be the water temple in Ocarina which single handily killed any desire I had to replay that game again and the very last level in super mario bros the lost levels (D-4 I think) which annoyed me so much I didnt complete the game until 18 years later.

Also all the snow levels in Donkey Kong country spinning in a stupidly fast barrel in the middle of the screen with no indication where the next barrel is and one wrong mover spelling instant death is not fun particularly as when you run out of lives you lose all your progress from the last save point quite a way back, I never finished that game in the end and I still get feelings of anger thinking about it all these years on.

I absolutely agree.

As for what RJ 17 said, I think pretty much the whole of Battletoads can be considered "annoying".

So aside from those, and out of the games I've (somewhat) recently played - it's Mission 18 in Devil May Cry 3. Why? first, because of the Damned Chess Board. Note: that is the name of the area there and also doubles as the description. You are legally and morally required to put the word "damned" in there. You have to fight all the chess pieces and they are all fucking hard. Each one.
- The pawns are mostly just an annoyance but still take time to die.
- The knights are hard mofos.
- The Bishops shoot fire in four directions and also heal the others.
- The rooks take A LOT of beating, also shoot in four directions, so they can hit you even if you're on the other side of the board.
- The queen homes in on you and dashes through you until the end of the board (then repeats), which makes beating the annoyingly much HP she has even more of a hassle because you have to dodge and chase her all the time.
- And finally the king - if you defeat him, everything else dies, however he has the HP of at least half the chess pieces combined; if you attack him while the rooks are alive, he'll just switch places with one; and if there aren't rooks around you'll only be able to sneak a few hits before the king does his mega nova-like attack that hits everything in a sizeable radius around.

This sounds hard but add the fact that the chess pieces can "freeze" in place, making them unable to act for a bit but invulnerable. And they'll happily do that while you're attacking them to stop your combo. Also, the pawns turn into other pieces when they reach the end of the board.

This fight is awful on Dante Must Die. It can take a good half an hour even if you're trying to be quick.

But that damned chess board isn't the whole level - that's just the beginning. You now have to face all the bosses you've previously beaten. Well, not exactly - you can choose which ones you want to fight, but you have to beat at least three and one (Beowulf) is the boss I hate the most out of them (however, Arkham takes the prize of the most hated boss in the whole game. THE WHOLE GAME)

Primal's water realm was fun. The game suddenly became true 3D rather than 2D (you couldn't jump).

What? I like water levels.

As for the hardest level evar, well frankly I'm sure that's been memory blocked for a long time.

The last level in Star Wars: Republic Commando. It was in Chewie homeworld and there were two droid deploy things and the area was an open space meaning nowhere to take cover. I was only able to pass that level by pure luck.

:p At first glance I thought you were going to say that Hydrocity Zone in Sonic 3 was annoying/hard...to which I'd have to say that if you found any Sonic 3 level challenging then you shouldn't be playing Sonic games. Hell, you can get Super Sonic by level 3, level 2 if you know where ALL the big rings are.

And that was the other thing! Even if by the grace of god you managed to beat the hover bike level, chances are more likely than not that you'd only have like, 2 lives left for the rest of the game. Yeah, good luck with that.

:p Hey now, Battle Toads started out as a fun little Final Fight/Ninja Turtles Arcade beat'em up game...then came the hover bike level and many a game cartridges made unscheduled flights out of windows...or into wood chippers. :p

Funny you should say that actually. My little brother wanted me to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles for him recently and I started a new file where I got all 7 emeralds by Zone 3, Act 1. I kept double jumping to active Super Sonic by accident :(

Super Sonic TOO OP.

Heh heh yeah, Sonic 3 was the EASIEST game to get all the Chaos Emeralds in, and they give'em out like they're going out of style. Like the game thinks they're gonna rot. Indeed you can be Super Saiyajin Sonic by Zone 3, and indeed Super Sonic is ridiculously over powered. No joke: if you hit a bit enough "straight away" with nothing slowing you down, you can end up going so fast that - just like The Flash - you apparently atomize yourself and phase into a wall, becoming stuck there until you reset or let the time run out.

Then there's Hyper Sonic which is even more powerful..."Double Jump to clear the screen of all one-jump-kill enemies"? Yeah, why bother even having a level? Just say "You win, the end." once you gather all the Hyper Emeralds.

Ahhhhh Sonic 3 & Knuckles...I was DEFINITELY in the Sonic camp of the Sonic vs Mario debate back in the day. I played the crap outta Sonic 3 & Knuckles...that and Mega Man X. :p

I actually didn't belong to either camp. I loved Mario and Sonic and could never choose between the two :p

The forced stealth missions in Uncharted. Fuck those missions, at absolutely every other point you get the consequence of facing more enemies, not getting easy take-downs and getting better weapons... buuuut suddenly, if those enemies catch a glimpse of you, you have to redo it.

Lol. And because I am a fucking nerd I must correct you. Mario's overalls were eventually retconned to blue. Yes I just used "retcon" to explain something regarding Super Mario. I have no life.
