It's hard to say which level of Ocarina of Time I find more annoying - the Forest Temple or the Water Temple. Playing the first time, when I was... I dunno, pretty young (7? 8?), I managed to get stuck in both of them. The Water Temple I just gave up and left it, came back a year later and finished it with ease. But the Forest Temple... I got it done, but only after many hours of frustrated searching WITH THAT MUSIC GOING ON AN ENDLESS LOOP. I listen to that music now, there's a noticeable increase in my heart rate. Seriously, if you feel like torturing yourself, listen to that on a loop while doing some frustrating task.

Rayman (first one) fighting the lava lobster, of course I was about 8 at the time and I wasn't very good at games back then but still :/.

Basically any penultimate level of any game; on the basis the last level is a boss fight I always find the level before the final boss fight more difficult, a good example of this being in Mario and other sidescrollers (like Rayman)

halo 3 vindmaster annual (the last mission with 4 people, if anyone dies you restart the mission)
It took my friends and me like three or four hours to do that and we just barely managed to do it.(one of my friends was one or two seconds from falling into lava when I hit the ship) The time I had tried it before that one of the guys with me got marooned on a pillar that fell over after a minute when we hit a check point and couldn't go any farther.

I can think of two levels at the moment. The first one is the last level in Crash Twinsanity when you're trying to get to the final boss fight. They do not give you enough abilty to get extra lives in that area and it was annoying to me when my brother managed to get to the final boss.

The second was the last level on Treasure Planet for the GBA. I was stuck on that level for the longest time before I managed to beat it. Hell, when I did beat it I didn't know what the hell was going on until the credits started rolling.

Sure, it's a Hacked Rom but my God...

It's the most evil series of levels I've ever seen in a platformer.

Before they were nerfed EQ hell levels. That game grinds on xp so slowly anyway, who in their right mind thought "Hey, every 5 levels lets make you gain XP at an even slower rate"

Those stupid Blockheads from Okami. Mainly the last one. I didn't have trouble with most of them but in the end I decided to actually draw on an old tv where the dots showed up. Thee Ship levels in the first Kingdom Hearts. They weren't hard but they were sooooooooooo boring until you got the warp that let you jump from explored world to explored world. Then there was Sephiroth in KHII. I can recall spending a whole weekend of leveling up and fighting him in order to beat him. Still one of the best memories of all time though, that feeling when I beat him.

That turret level in Jak II on hard. I never got passed that part, not that I've tried in maybe four years. The underground escort mission, especially since if you died at the end you had to start all over but without the ammo you had the first time around. There are others from the Jax games but those two were the worst imo. Rachet and Clank that crystal collecting in the frozen level. The never ending yetis were horrible. That part in up your Arsenal were all the enemies were turned into robots. The difficulty spiked at that point and there were SO many at once.

Polias Masis in Stat Wars Battlefront 2. I mean that spawn is one of the worst designs ever. You never spawn as close as you need to and the people going for the command point always spawn close so its hard to defend the first point. There are some other maps where it is nearly impossible to get certain post. Naboo center point comes to mind.

rouge galaxy had that annoying tower level where you were always switching from tower to tower and those ruins on that jungle planet were just a pain. Strong enemies and a long path. Good game though.

Mass Effect.

Artemus Tau Cluster. Therum. Liara's recruitment mission. Difficulty: Insanity.

Killing the Geth Armature on foot.

You know the part.
You know there is a way to get the Mako past that narrow gap that's "supposed" to force you to proceed on foot, right? And as much as people may hate the Mako (I loved it personally), it's very good for blowing up Geth.

"Wow maybe I should play Dragonage again, that was a pretty good g-THE FADE!
Oh christ, the fade. It isn't even that hard, it's just bloody confusing and about 40 minutes too long. It's not even an actual level, it's a minor obstacle! Jesus! Who thought this was a good idea!?

OT: Half-life 2's strider battle. The game was really good up until that point. Considering how much valve playtest their games, i'm not sure why thst's the way it is.

Shadow of the Colossus's 15th colossus is such a *****, it's nothing to do with strategy, he just never gets close enouh to the bridge for you to jump on his head and then the 16th and final colossus, who's supposed to be the game's ultimate challenge, is so easy once you know what to do.

Also, every PS2 platformer ever made (Jak and Daxter, i'm looking at you). It's a mandatory requirement to have one level that has one single motherfucking jump/enemy/obstacle that is physically impossible to get past until one time you magically clear it out of sheer luck.

OP: Gotta say, God of War I when your in hell and you gotta climb up giant rotating towers. Covered in razor blades.
...that have really terrible hit boxes on them, and getting hit once sends you back to the bottom of the towers.

Ended up splitting my rubbish bin out frustration-induced rage, it was that irritating.
This, I was actually almost sick it made me that angry.

Also, I can't remember if it's in one or two, but the part where you've to push a cage up a hill with a sacrifice in it but enemies constantly hit you and the cage starts to slide back to the bottom.

It's the video game equivalent of someone pinning your arms down and slapping you in the face over and over until you black out.

I can think of a few:

Super Mario Bros 3: World 7 Level 4, I think. The jellyfish. The MOTHERFUCKING JELLYFISH! GGGGAAAAAAAH

Halo 3: Cortana, Solo on Legendary. Never again will suffer through that.

Halo Reach: The Truth and Reconciliation knock-off. It somehow manages to be more irritating than any other level in that game. Oh wait. I forgot the last level. Fucking holdout missions. Why. Just Why.

Starcraft: 3rd Terran mission. Another fucking holdout mission. Only you have to survive for a half a fucking hour against wave after wave of Zerg.

Mass Effect: Last part of Noveria. God-damn commandos!

Mass Effect 2: Collector ship, derelict reaper and pretty much any mission with a praetorian in it. Serious screw those things.

The last one that really annoyed me to the point of quitting the game forever was the first boss in Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Such a total change of gameplay in a game I was loving up to that point. Many failed attempts later, I quit the game to avoid destroying my PC. Never looked back.

the part in the force unleashed with the star destroyer.
i liked the game more than it had any right to be liked but that part was so annoying because i didn't know what to do and the hints the game gives you for how to position the damn thing are just wrong and it takes a lot of time to figure that out.

Recently, I am have trouble with the Olympus part of Aqua's story in Birth by Sleep. It's not a hard level per-say, it's just that I have to kill a certain amount of heartless, I mean nobodies unversed in a short amount of time. Aqua isn't doing a lot of damage so I'll be leveling her up over the weekend.
Magnega(s) + any powerful area spells. Aqua can deal tons of damage as long as you stick to magic.

On topic, most if not all of the levels in Resident Evil Outbreak -series, with Flashbacks in Outbreak 2 probably leading the pack. You're being chased by an undefeatable asshole with an axe who keeps blocking your route in tight corridors and often inflicts Bleed status, making you move slower and, well, bleed slowly to death. The level is also filled with enemies that can poison you (and they keep respawning, thank you very much) and like with every stage in RE Outbreak, you're on a time limit due to being infected with the zombie virus.
