The most astonishing thing about Minecraft

I was having a discussion the other day while playing L4D with a friend, and he was confused that many reviewers (IGN, Gamespot, Yahtzee) have not reviewed Minecraft. I told him that well, Minecraft wasn't finished yet.

Thats when it hit me, people can make cities, mines, rollercoasters and the goddamn Enterprise. One person even made Rapture! And the game isn't done.

I mean, most Escapists keep on crying out for innovation, yet the game that has taken the internet by storm. A game that one can invest hours upon hours into, creating their own universes, is essentially just glorified Legos.

The mere thought that someone can make a scale model of the Enterprise and one person even has built Columbia from Bioshock Infinite, the game isn't even done yet. There isn't even a story.

What the fuck is it going to look like when it's done?

It's going to look awesome!

And that's the thing, Minecraft is so simple, yet the possibilities of what to do with that simplicity are infinite. That's what makes it so awesome.

Oh, and it took a whole server of people to make Rapture. I know that's probably what you meant, but still.

You forgot to mention the computer some guy built...

There probably will be no story. It's a survival game with block placement.

Maybe they will add in some mechanics (like gears and motors and pulleys so I can make an elevator instead of 50 flights of stairs...). That would be cool. Or more furniture. And the ability to add other people (NPCs, not multiplayer. Because sometimes my cities get lonely...).

Why does it need a story? Minecraft should be used by other game developers to see how it's really done, to show TRUE innovation. When it's done it will look pretty much the same but with a graphical update [lego like], packed with more building tools and enemies etc. When it's done the game will be a marvel in the video game industry, not to say it isn't something spectacular already.

I think the appeal lies in the possibilities that you can truly make something great

The most astonishing thing about Minecraft, in my opinion, is that people actually enjoy that game. I thought Final Fantasy XIII was more exciting than Minecraft.

I believe Notch was considering some form of story, that and there is that adventure mode he is planning. =3

I am not saying it needs a story, I am just saying that it dosnt even have a story and its already this amazing. Notch has said there will be a story, but something loose, not sure. Valve has to be cutting themselves, considering they were just body slammed off the Usermade Content Throne.

I see this as just giving the player a purpose. Nothing too fancy, just a reason to why your alone and why you must survive. I don't want anything too crazy, like having to save the world from a dragon or something.

the thing is, minecraft will never be finished. not in the way that it wont get out of beta, cause it will, but the fact that notch has said he's going to keep creating mobs and blocks for it, and so will the expansive community of modders. Thats why its such a great game. there is no ending, the levels are 8 TIMES THE DIAMETER OF THE EARTH and every world is differint. there will be no stopping minecraft from expanding.

What's astonishing to me is how so many people devoted so much of their time to Minecraft, a program (can't call it a game really) that is just a black canvas and hates newcomers with passion. I fail to see the big difference between Minecraft and MS Paint to be honest, only Paint is more user friendly. Of course all of the above is just my personal opinion, don't get offended if you love it or anything.

comparing ms paint to minecraft is like saying a sidescroller version of mass effect 2 is the same as a normal version of said game.

I actually hated Minecraft and was surprised people found it entertaining. Minecraft is a game? Please, it's more like a glorified AutoCAD
