Hey guys, everyone always talks about the best and worst games, but which one do you think is the most exceptionally average? (oxymoron intended)

It also can't be a game other people really like or hate with a passion (Halo, for instance). I'm talking about a game that is perfectly adequate, performs exactly as expected, and is received averagely in sales and reviews.

I'm trying to think of a good example, but I can't think of one for the life of me. Can you think of anything that fits these qualifications?

My immediate thought was Timeshift. I stopped playing it, not because I hated it, but because I nothinged it. Everything about it was "fine", but nothing was really "good".

It even has a metascore of 71 on metacritic. That's probably right on the average-mediocre sweet spot.

Dead Space 2 landed in that zone for me.

It wasn't bad, it wasn't good, it was just... there. I played it and that's it, the game was played. Nothing else to say.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, or maybe something like Gauntlet on the N64.

Dante's Inferno for me, its very Mediocre.

It's not a bad game, but you won't want to pick it up for another play through.

Hmm. I have to say Call of Duty.

It sits in the middle of arcade FPS games and realistic tactical shooters, it's graphics are good enough to be enjoyed, but "bad" enough that older machines can run it.
And it attracts a huge audience of people with different tastes, thus it attracts "the average gamer".

Disclaimer: average doesn't neccessarily have to do with the quality, as in "mediocre", but rather as in "the typical representation".

A game I found recently that has been a sort of annoyingly bland was Dungeon Siege 3. I loved the first two, the third one though, just seemed.. meh. I mean it's all there, beyond a few issues with multiplayer that I probably was never going to use the game is fine, it just never amazed.

Homefront and Medal of Honor pretty much decided to bury their slightly intriguing premises (modern day Red Dawn and gritty modern Afghanistan respectively) in favor of shallow bland COD knockoffs that failed to do anything unique in any manner. Stupid boring characters, repetitive ugly levels, dead end narrative, obnoxious linearity and boring combat. Combine all this with pandering to special interests and mouth breathing sllorts and you have the recipe for the most dull 4 hours you can spend 60 bucks on. Rest in peace you slackers.

Qbert comes to mind, so does DigDug.

Then of course there's the obviously pornstar main character in Mr. Driller
Dig Dug is an amazing arcade classic bro! ^^

OT: Some of the better movie liscenses are so mediocre it kinda hurts. One of the sings of mediocerity is that it is rather forgettable. So tons of games I just cannot remember. One that springs to mind is Deus Ex: Invisible war. Yes, it was hated by fans, me included, but when you look at it as a game: It is just very mediocre. Not too bad, but nothing too good either. Just so very blaaahhhh.

I'm gonna have to say fable.

The battles were hard enough to be losable, but not enough to be engaging.

The selection of weaponry was exactly what you would expect.

The plot was just a smudge away from cliche.

It was Just, well, as a local saying goes: "it tastes like water".

Haze on PS3.

It was fine, there was an attempt at story, it wasn't bad looking, it had decent gameplay elements which were unique and I hear the vehicles weren't too bad.

No one I know of loves it.

Troll reported. If you're not a troll, I'd suggest having a look at some GOTY awards for last year and reading the OP.

I found Timeshift to be the pinnacle of next gen gaming when it was released, kill fucker, rewind, kill fucker again.

Def Jam Icon, its so average everyone's forgotten it exist. EA bought the hard hitting rappers together to slog it out using helicopters and enormous studio speakers to smash each other up... and no one talks about it.

Recently, I would have to say Divinity II: Dragon Knight Saga. Sprawling RPG game along the likes of Dragon Age done extremely... average. Everything about the game is average. The combat is decent, but not special. The story is okay. The controls, map, everything is just there. Existing.
THAT'S IT!!!! I knew there was some game I poured 35 or 45 hours into and then just....... uhhh.... Everything worked but nothing really felt right......

Divinity 2: DK Saga.

Hard Reset: does a lot right and a lot wrong. It's not a lasting experience.
Aion: very pretty, a well designed world, but with lackluster quests and no immersion whatsoever. One of those "I played this for a few weeks and got tired of it" MMO's.

Dead space 2 , divinity2 , like some people have said , not bad but juat meh .

Now for my personal contribution to the thread i'm going to say star ocean 4 . Nothing about the game is very memorable , the story is okay although non-sensical at points , the combat was fun but not as much as previous SO games . I need to do a second playthrough on hard but can't bring myself to do it , been putting it off for 2 years now.

Every Call of Duty past 2

Gears of War franchise

Halo franchise

Killzone franchise

Wolfenstein (2009)

Team Fortress 2

... Most shooters in general are just average to me. There are a few that stand out: STALKER series, Crysis, Battlefield 2, Half Life 2.
