*snaps fingers* I KNEW I was getting my terms confused... ah well, Biology isn't exactly my strong point. I trust you got my point though.

You weren't exactly defending it, you were attacking CoD (a game I don't play, but don't hate - personal preferences being what they are, and also not subscribing to the belief that popular = bad by default) with a hateful and fiery passion brought on, apparently, by the knowledge some people disagreed with your opinion. Seriously, go back and read your post.

Half-Life 2 is only 6 years old, and from what I was able to play of it (about half - I'll finish it when I can, reasons are complicated) and while I thought the graphics had aged brilliantly, particularly the water effects, it really wasn't anything special. Like I said, the day it becomes bad is a long way off, but really, the best game ever?

I prefer Halo myself. And don't say "well in ten years people'll be shitting all over that", because they're already doing so. Hype backlash is a wonderful thing... /sarcasm
I never said it was the best game ever. I don't have a problem with people not liking, I feel as if people bash it without knowing much about the climate during its release or giving it fair chance. Yes, great games like System Shock 2 that everyone seems to love I find hard to get into because I missed it when it was released, but I can still respect that what it has done for the way people approach a certain genre of gaming. And I was using cod as an antithesis, an example of what HL is not - a tongue-in-cheek remark regarding made-for-multiplayer games.
OK, with the "best game ever" comment I was mostly referring to the more fanatical HL2 fans - sorry about that, poor communication. Out of interest, what was the climate when it was released? I know Halo 2 was also released then, but other than that... well, I was 9 or so back then.

I used to despise Half-Life 2 solely because of the worst parts of its fanbase. Then I played the game, and now know enough about it to give it a chance, at least. I don't understand the adoration it receives, but I must admit, neither do I understand the (few) haters.

Also, CoD made for multiplayer? I've been told this about MW2 (though I've also been told the multiplayer was terrible) but I've heard that CoD4 at least had a great singleplayer.

What a car load of shit that game was... If I hear "Ryan Cooper!" one more time.

The suck was only worse with NFS:Shift, I thought it would be the second coming of Porsche Unleashed and all I got from it was- I guess EA spelled Shit wrong on the cover, 'cuz this game sucks.

No cars had any damping at all, the springs were free to dissipate their energy by bouncing you down the track. It's hard to corner when your front wheels are off the road 50% of the time.

The tuning sliders were backwards! Tune the car to oversteer and it understeers and vice-versa. Ridiculous!

Add in your typical NFS rubberband AI, uninspired UI and seriously boring career progression and it's a(nother) waste of $60 from the Need for Speed franchise.

*sigh*

Here's to hoping that Hot Pursuit 3 can get this series back on track.

The entire Wii console. Keep in mind that this was back in 2007, when the only good games were Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

And Fable 2. God, I loved Fable but this was just so disappointing. Not bad necessarily, but it just lacked that special something.

Final Fantasy VIII is a good choice...but I have to say Final Fantasy XII ultimately broke my heart. It starts off pretty strong, introduces characters and fun gameplay and what not...then the characters are pointless and the gameplay is so overwhelming BS as eventually the CPU is allowed to cheat. It starts off great, then it's a long, steep, slide of crap to the pool of suck.
I believe those are my EXACT opinions on FF XII. Other than that, though, my other disappointment would be tekken 6, which was basically tekken 5, but with much longer loading times, and a totally nerf'ed Yoshimitsu (who, as you might guess, I like a fair bit).

Fable 2, it was just...lacking something, perhaps charm, which makes me believe the first one was superior.

Farcry 2 it was good...just a tad boring

EDIT: Spore was my first ever true dissapointment. God was that utter shit

Most shooters around then were either shoot'em'ups, multiplayer orientated, or the occasional tactical police sim. What HL2 really brought to the table was story-telling outside of cinematics. Also the physics engine they made, although not the first of its kind, created an interesting, organic environment.

I have no real problem with cod as a shooter, I've played CoD4 competitively and even won a few local tourneys, but the singleplayer seems like a rail-shooter at times, where you would just waste a room of enemies and move on. It was even admitted that MW2's story was written after the levels were designed. I find the multiplayer is quite enjoyable for CoD, but I would just play the singleplayer once and never touch it again.

Amry Men RTS on the gamecube. I guess i was expecting something like Battalion Wars where you can do RTS or first person, but it was straight up RTS. ANd there were not magnifying glasses of death.

Assuming "Dissapointment" is the ratio of anticipation to let down.

The one game I avoided all spoilers, and such, of it, all conversations and dev walkthroughs. DARK VOID, yes, I didn't listen to anyone else, I was expecting quite a bit from it.

I could have listened to other people saying it is a load of poo, but I had to find out the hard way. Everyone has to some time.

I will admit, two of the things that impressed me about Half-Life 2 were the physics puzzles and the passive storytelling. I didn't particularly care for the whole "standing in a room listening to NPCs talk" thing, but on the other hand I liked the subtle stories and details told by the environments around you. I wish they'd include more of such in Halo - the funny thing is that I know Bungie can do it, as many of their multiplayer maps (in Halo 3 at least) tell their own little stories through the background scenery and environment that link them into the wider universe, but it seems rather light in the campaigns. One of the things I disliked about Reach was that they seemed to have abandoned the passive storytelling altogether, just lifting the maps from the campaign instead of working hard to make them resonate with the Halo background.

The linear and heavily scripted combat impressed me less so, but in a climate such as the one you described I can certainly see how it would be well received.

Um, well, um, this is hard to say for fear of many hate filled comments to come, but *gulp* Team Fortress 2
BUT HEAR ME OUT!!!!!
I heard it was awesome and saw all the "Meet the______" trailers and it looked like hella fun.
But I made the mistake of buying the PS3 Orange box version, so there was an average of 8 people online at once (9 if I counted myself) and there were no updates and, like, 5 maps, so I just got 2fort and would desperately try, in vain, to find a decent server.

*sigh* at least I got Portal with it!

Assassin's Creed. Just didnt do it for me. Didnt live up to the hype, either.

Now, Assassin's Creed II. There we fucking go. Leonardo Da Vinci is the one defining factor of epic win in that particular game. And in humanity in general.

God, I was not a huge fan of Assassins Creed 2. I heard it was great, and the jumping controls ended up being terrible and it was not a great game in my opinion.

I know, I'm saying that being forced to experiment with no obvious direction while bullets are chugged into your face has nothing to do with with fun, entertainment, or logical game design.

Oblivion.
After all the hype I'd heard and read, like someone said about Bioshock, I expected gold. It held my attention for a full 10 minutes before I went "Screw it!" and went to play something else.
So now I just don't worry too much about what other people say. If they say it's great, I expect a pile of steaming dung.
Okay, now tell me why Morrowind is a pile of steaming dung.

Because it's great.

Dragon Age was pretty disapointing considering how everyone seems to drool about it. Same with FEAR and any RPG that I thought look interesting in my teenage years and could only get recently.

I never mentioned Morrowind, nor have I played it. I don't have an opinion on it. If I play it, I just don't expect it to be any good. That way, if it is I am pleasantly surprised. If it isn't, it meets my expectations. It's a system that works pretty well.
If you meant how is Oblivion a pile of steaming dung, maybe it was because it wasn't my type of game, maybe because everyone I knew said it was incredible and then I couldn't concentrate on it long enough to get more than three quests done. The scenery was amazing, I can give it that. But scenery can only keep me moving for so long. That was what broke the deal for me. All the moving and the stiff combat. The player character looks like someone playing Red Steel 2 on the Wii with the "Flail wildly and hope for the best!" taactic, only he's also able to use spells. Even they didn't help it's combat. To each their own, I guess.

But, we're not here to debate about Oblivion, it's about disappointing games.
