What was the most tearjerkingly sad moment you have come accross in a Nintendo game? For me, it's the ending to Super Paper Mario. I never thought a game that was so tounge-in-cheek could make me tear up.

Blue shells make me cry every time.

They're like little precision-guided tragedies.

The Death of the baby metroid in Super Metroid.

Anyone else? Just me found that sad?

In Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
your entire first-generation party is murdered. You play the rest of the game as their children. Pretty unexpected and pretty sad.

Another Fire Emblem one, this time from Awakening:

Emeryn's suicide and the ensuing fight against Mustafa. He and his men no longer fully support the actions of their king and have lost the will to fight, but he cannot simply let you pass or his family will be murdered. He tells his troops that they can throw down their arms and leave if they wish; no harm will come to them. But they decide to stay anyway out of loyalty to him. And so you end up killing several people who have no desire to harm you.

Lots of Fire Emblem games have a noble one-off "villain" but Mustafa was the most understandable and sympathetic to me.

Ending of Mother 3.

Scratch that, the whole fucking game. Seriously I can't even. My feels levels were so high (lol.) one of the few times I've cried at a video game, and another time just happened to be Earthbound. Earthbound, however, was tears of happiness. Mother 3 was a mix of awe, sadness, and confusion, that all led up to an epic finale. It's a shame that one of the best Nintendo franchises, is also the most overlooked. I still have friends, who are decently hardcore Nintendo fans, still not even bother knowing anything about the Mother series. They think Ness and Lucas are brothers, or that Earthbound is a baseballl game. If there's any game series that deserves it's strong fanbase, it's this one. I can really connect with these games, and they taught me a lot. They brought back nostalgia, despite me only playing them for the first time a few months ago. Rarely do I want to play a game again the second I beat it.

There are a lot of games that I consider 'experiences.' Dark Souls, Ocarina of Time, and your first Pokémon game, to name a few. Neither of those games, though, made me feel so many different emotions, and do it at the right time. You will laugh, you will cheer, but you'll also cry. Have I mentioned the god-like music? Just play these games.

Thus ends my 3:30 in the morning rant. I fell asleep on the couch. Again.

I haven't played too many Nintendo games, but the ending to Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was quite heart rendering...

Midna finally reveals her true self to Link (and to us), and then runs off into the mirror gate, which instantly shatters. Not only is she gone forever, but there was a hardly a moment to say a proper goodbye.

I have barely played any Nintendo games since the original Pokemon Silver. The only one that comes to mind is Fire Emblem: Awakening.

In my play through with the male main character there was a moment around three quarters of the way in:

Lucina believes that you will kill Chrom (her father) and set about the event that causes the world to be destroyed. She has decided to kill you in order to prevent this from happening.

In this particular play through she was in a relationship with the main character. So she is put into a situation where she feels she has to kill the man she loves in order to protect her father and the world.

It was a pretty dark and tragic part of the story, but I loved the way it was written.

When the little bee died in Earthbound. Used to bother me when I was a kid and didn't understand plot devices. The first 20 mins of that game broke my heart when I was little. I play it now and it plays out like comedy.

Hardly. Perhaps the best evidence to me of that moment's power is when the Game Grumps played it. Normally they're too busy goofing around and making jokes to care about what's actually happening on screen, but when that happens they both cry out in genuine horror at a 16-bit cutscene. Not going to link the vid since it's long but worth checking out.

On a similar note, the point at the end of Twilight Princess where:

It appears as though Ganondorf has just killed Midna, crushing her helmet and leaving the remains on the ground. And then he charges after you with four pale horsemen behind him.

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass made me cry tears of anguish when having to return to the Temple of the Ocean King for the f*cking hundredth time. Does that count?

Well I have recently been listening to some music from Majora's Mask, so let's go with something from there.

We could go with the long quest for the couple's mask, where at the end Kafei and Anju are finally reunited moments before the world ends. Pretty sad moment as they gather for what would be the last few seconds the town has left to exist before being crushed.

Then again at least with that game all the heart breaking moments are sprinkled with the thought that you can fix everything at least...Except for the Deku Butler and his son, with the butler crying over his kids corpse in the end credits.

I don't recall anything remotely heart-wrenching from any Nintendo game I ever played.
Some of the Donkey Kong Country game overs are pretty depressing though.

Back on the SNES, FFII (4) had a few pretty sad moments. Tellah and Yang's sacrifices, combined with
can both be pretty tear-jerky.

This, so much this.

Even worse for my female character:

I was her mother! So Lucina is standing there with her sword pulled readying herself to kill me, all the while Robin tells her it is okay and that she understands and goes on and on about proud she is of Lucina and that she loves her..

God that was depressing! Never before has a 3ds been hugges as tightly.

Seconded. It's sad the Genealogy never got released in the states because it had one of the better stories in the franchise.

Man that shit was pretty powerful on it's own. But you know what would have made it better?

If Samus had recounted the events in excruciating detail in a really monotonous voice. Fuck Other M.
