The title pretty much sums it up.

For me, it was Deus Ex. Granted, I played Deus Ex and wasn't really impressed with the whole thing, up until I got to headquarters early in the game. Like all RPGs (or games with RPG elements), I started exploring all the rooms, including the women's bathroom. So when I get to the chief, he comments on how I shouldn't be going into the women's bathroom because it's not cool!

Did it contribute anything to the gameplay? No. Did it serve as a Checkov's gun of sort, serving a grim foreshadowing to the game's overall plot? No. Did it completely blow my mind? YES.

Does anyone have similar stories about the most inane crap that blew your mind?

Psycho Mantis, reading my memory card on the Gamecube remake of Metal Gear Solid.

"So, you like Super Smash Bros Melee do you?"
"I see you like to play Super Mario Sunshine!"

How does he know!

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

"I NEED SCISSORS"

If there was ever anything I needed to make a game hilarious, it was that line right there. I still quote it at random times when I'm with friends.

In Red Alert 3 there's one level as the Empire of the Rising Sun where you attack Hollywood, California. Near where your base starts off there's a large building that you can attack that's barely in the way, but it's noticeable. It's actually the EALA headquarters, ie: the company that developed the game.

Clicking on it reveals that the space-time continuum could be irreparably damaged should harm come to the building. And destroying the building triggers one of your units to shout "Their ill-begotten products shall take the shelves no more!!"

I thought it was so awesome that I recorded it and made a YouTube video out of it to share:

Saint's Row 1's MP3 player blew my mind.

I can listen to the in-game radio music, while on foot!

Which was great, because Saint's Row 1 happened to have a great soundtrack.

In the second level of Unreal there was this crate that you could jump up on. If you looked down, there was a really good water affect on a small puddle of water that had accumulated up there.

It probably really looked like ass, but I remember it looking about as good as the shallow water effects in Bioshock.

The first game I ever played was on an arcade cabinet. Missile Command. Things that people now wouldn't even bat an eye are where massively impressive when it was the first time you came across it.

Like the invisible blocks in Mario Bros. Think back on pretty much any innovative thing in the last 30 years. Chances are it amazed me at some point.

The AI in Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield is very annoying at times, but I did like the time I got killed when I was running away from a grenade that had been thrown at me, and got stuck in the doorway with an AI trying to do the same thing.

Probing Uranus in Mass Effect 2.

No, seriously.
Really? I was more impressed that you could actually flush the toilet in the commanders bathroom in ME2.

Trying to romance both Jack and Tali in Mass Effect 2. Tali remarked that in order to continue the relationship with her, I had to break up with Jack. That completely blew my mind. It showed how much work Bioware put into the relationship aspect of the game.

Vampire the Masquerade,
everything had its own little backstory to follow, you sneak into the hospital or clinic, and with adequate rooting around you find out this doctor who exists just to shoo you away is having an affair with his secretary and you can use it to bully him.
or the way all the npc extras will sit there and talk and joke and argue when u are stealthing past.
builds the immersion so well. all the emails u read sounds like things ppl would say.
Bioshock and Dead Space 2 also get good props for making fallen cities that look like they were once not just inhabitable but recently nice places with children and shoppers and adverts etc. the guy in the solar panel place with the birds. Again the diaries and textlogs which are my best are the helpful or hint ones but just ones done by everyday ppl with everyday problems.

these are the things that make a game immersive. and make me care about the mission/game/character/place

In Fallout: New Vegas. I had conned the drifter in to giving me his gun, The Mysterious Magnum, and when I pulled it out, it did the Mysterious Stranger's little musical sting. That entertained me for hours.

The standing water on the carrier in Crysis. I fell over frozen and sat admiring all the tiny ripples in the surface and the reflections of the surroundings.

You can smoke in Vanquish! You can smoke!

Also, in Disgaea, there's an enemy with a horse wiener.

You can steal it and use it as a weapon.

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, on Kattlox Isle (sp?) Liesil (sp?) and Tron stand on a ship watching the combatants fight.

But if Tron is selected by one of the played on that stage, Liesil cheers for her as she fights! That little touch was pretty awesome when I noticed it.
