You all know the drill when your at school and they have that filter to stop you going on websites so whats the strangest things you've found blocked?
I'll go first at my school they blocked the google search of "what not to put in a compost heap" as well as blcoking skype and steam.

Well... at the school I went to, they blocked google images, but not... other... sites.
So it screwed us over when we had to search for pictures for work. Of course, we got the blame when they blocked any useful site.
Idiots.

I can see why a school would block Steam and Skype. But Wikipedia and BBC? That's weird.

At my work, they're blocking GMail. And most anoymous e-mail sites, as a matter of fact. Something about protection of intellectual property...

Well, at my school, for some reason they blocked wikipedia and BBC, but as proved by an adventurous friend of mine, do not block searches for 'wet pussy' or 'hardcore anal sex'.

There's logic in action for you!
Well wikipedia is really unreliable, I mean, you google hardcore anal sex and you get FACTS!

My school blocked all research for our engineering project last year. We weren't allowed to research the Lucy Air Engine becuase it had the word 'Lucy' in the name.

After I move up to 6th form and they started to put the blocks in place, I did notce that this site, gameplay, gamesradar, play.com, hmv blah blah blah were all blocked within a month. After that, there was nothing to do during lunch times

Our high school blocked everything cool of course. However... little did they know you can go into the command propt, type ping www.whateveriwanttogoto.com, wait for the reply, copy the numerical code and past it in the adress bar. Bam I just got around the block.

Of course at college there are no blocks, but you know they monitor site traffic and you have to register your computer so you know someone notices when something crazy comes up and your name is right above it.

Everything. Google.co.uk/.com was blocked as "Students time wasting" and Garfield.com was blocked under "Hardcore Pornography". I'm never sure who assigned the "Reasons for filter" section, especially not after that little incident.

I'm not sure if they were just idiots or if the parents had actually come complaining to the teachers that their child had been doing dirty things to pictures of Garfield.

This site isn't blocked by the schools (as I am at them right now) so I guess it's alright. It blocks images and dailymtg which pisses me off. But they...unblocked onemanga recently, last year I couldn't get onto that site and just the other day I went on it here. Weird.

I wrote a sports blog on foxsports.com for a bit. One time when I went to log in, I could access everyone's blog page except for two. My blog (which ticked me off), and another Canadian writer. I couldn't understand it, but they fixed it like two days later after I posted on my blog about it from home.

What's the problem with that? I mean, it's like Pimppeter said. Wikipedia and the BBC don't provide any useful, real-world knowledge. And supposing you were doing a project on bathing kittens? That wet pussy search would be extremely useful.

No school ever wants you to learn what others are doing. You must do it their way! OR ELSE!

okay okay, not at school, but at tafe you can't look up "bits"

Also, kinda unrelated, but the teacher misspelled a website on a sheet she gave out once, and it went to a porn site (which wasn't blocked? tafe's filter is weird)

Two years ago, my high school blocked a site that gave information about e. coli. I needed that for a project I was doing, so I faked an e-mail (a scathing flame) from an angry parent and sent it to the school. I recall saying something like, "Did someone in your immediate family die of e. coli, and you hold a grudge against the infection to this day?". Two days later, the block was lifted.

My friends and I still laugh about this every once in a while.

I used to administer the banlist for my old school for a while after I finished as a student there. I don't remember there being any great howlers (except for Miniclip being unlocked), but I can tell you, that system was so ridiculously clunky and primitive. If they are all like that one was (sorry, can't remember the name) it's small wonder they just don't seem to work.

I know the school I went to had anything to do with Nazis and communists blocked, imagine now that I did history. Researching for information boiled down to going on other peoples computers and proceeding to type carrots into google images and going to page 17 I think. Was very funny, very cruel and yet the site was never banned...

I remember Wikipedia being blocked at my old school for being classed as "gambling" apparently there`s a seedier side to the online encyclopedia...
