I have not actually played Warhammer 40k but from what you have said they are remarkably like the Zerg.

I am an SC fan to my dying breath, so I have to say that the zerg are more scary. Just in my humble opinion, please correct me if I am wrong.

Tyranids pre-date Zerg.
