With games now having DLCs, Collector's Editions, Strategy Guides, Expansion Packs, Subscription Models, Microtransactions, Add-on Items, and every kind of pay-scheme imaginable, it's quite possible to spend a small fortune on a single game by itself.

While plenty of other threads have gone into questioning these practices, I'm more curious about individual experiences. So let's dive in with two simple questions:

1: What is the most you ever paid for a single game + extras (MMOs count)
2: Do you feel it was worth it?

ESO Imperial Edition. And yes, it was. The hard part is pulling myself away because Zenimax has constructed a beautiful world to inhabit, something that, for all its charms, was sorely lacking in Skyrim with its gray, brown, and white color palette. I'd do it again and even though it's available now without sub, I continue to pay in for my 1500 crowns every month as well as free expansion content when it comes. The crown store has nothing you wouldn't already find in WoW's own real money shop - mostly cosmetic crap like special mounts, pets, and costumes, and having a steady stream of currency to depend on stops impulse buys for me, since there's always next month.

If we are counting mmos then easily WoW. I played about 3 years with a 15$ sub so 540$ + the base game ( came with burning crusade) 40$ + lich king 40$ + cataclysm 40$. So 660$ total gove or take 100$ or so.

Definately worth it. The time i played i quite enjoyed it. And don't regret a single moment. Wouldn't go back though.

Most i payed for a single non mmo was 100$ . That was for suikoden 3. That was not worth it a all. Terrible game.

Definitely World of WarCraft. I had a mostly active subscription since the game launched until a few months ago (I didn't get a statue because I cancelled for a little while during WotLK and Cataclysm due to computer trouble). So yeah... I've spent quite a bit on that game. Especially when you factor in the cost of the expansion packs, and the two realm/race transfers I bought a couple years ago.

As for whether it was worth it... yeah, I guess. I made a lot of good friends, we have a whole bunch of great memories, and it actually saved me money in the long run. All of the games that I would have otherwise played if not for the WoW addiction ended up being bargain bin priced by the time I got around to buying them.

If we're talking including subscription payments I'd say the £200 or so Lifetime Sub I paid to STO coupled with the ~£40 cost of the game itself is probably up there as the most for me. Doubly painful since its now F2P.

If not its harder to say...I own far too many games to remember how much they all cost. I think my AC2 Black Edition cost about £60-80 or thereabouts. And I've been considering getting a copy of FSN which is I think around £70 typically.

Although if we include kickstarter pledges to future games I put about £250 towards Star Citizen.

WoW tops the charts of course. I wouldn't be surprised if over 1000 euro's went into that game considering how long I've played it.

Other than that, 80 euro's for a limited edition of a game I can't remember. That's about it. :p

I don't play MMOs, so my most expensive purchase was Mass Effect 3's collectors' edition. Between tariffs and shipping fees, it cost me around $250.

And no, I don't think it was worth it. Not because of the ending, mind you (I'm one of those freaks of nature that liked it), but because the collector's edition itself was a disappointment. Aside from the "From Ashes" DLC and the N7 weapon kit the material was unremarkable. It included a "lithography" that was basically a Normandy postcard, an N7 patch, a sample of the utterly terrible Mass Effect comics and a mini-artbook, which is cute, but rather useless, considering I also own the "Art of Mass Effect" book. There was also some very forgetful cosmetic in-game content (like an N7 hoodie for Shepard... so I can break my immersion watching a space marine wearing 2010s clothing.)

I don't think I'm willing to spend that much on so little in the future. Maybe if it comes with a nice figurine, as I'm a figurine collector. But then again, special editions that come with figures tend to be ludicrously expensive; I'd rather just buy the game and get a similar figurine elsewhere.

Roughly £50 for Skyrim - full price on release for the base game (£30), Dawnguard and Dragonborn (£10 each). My Steam profile shows 316 hours played, so yeah I'd say it was worth it.

I don't play MMOs, the one F2P game I've played (MWO) doesn't have any microtransaction content that I actually want to buy, and I only buy DLCs/season passes if its story content for games that I've really enjoyed ... but because I have a general distrust of DLC I'll probably wait for a Steam sale.

Good lord. I played World of Warcraft since Vanilla up to Cataclysm, and aside from Vanilla, I had the collector's edition of each one, running me upwards of $80 a pop. With all of that, the monthly fees, race/class/server changes, I've easily spent $1000 on WoW alone. It was worth it at the time, and I adored every minute, but that was before I was working, and time became precious. You couldn't pay me to go back.

Oh, you people are so cute with your little video game prices.

I think my most expensive was Warhammer 40K. Between the overpriced miniatures, overpriced books, various hobby supplies, league fees, and so on... I actually have no idea how much. Thousands of dollars, for sure.

Next up would be D&D. Tabletop. I've been buying D&D books since 1st edition. I certainly don't have them all, but I have a lot.

After(?) that would be Magic: the Gathering. Ooof.

World of Warcraft. However many months worth of subscription fees, the battlechest, WotLK, Cata, WoD, a race change, a couple of faction changes, and a few realm changes. I have probably spent around £300+ on that game.

On a non-MMO, Halo: Reach. I got the legendary edition, which was £120, and then I got all the DLC packs to boot, so around £144?

are we only counting "video games"? because if not then its either Warhammer, W40K or Arkham horror with all expansions.
the warhammer purchases i wouldn't say im glad i did but i dont regret them either. Arkham horror i think was totally worth it since its really fun to set up a game with your mates and play a round or two

Halo 3 at $90-100, for the base game and the all of the map packs, that I was forced to buy in order to enjoy the match types my friends and I preferred. (You could add the cost of the Live subscription to that, as Halo 2 and 3 were the only games I routinely played online.) It was fun, but I still feel swindled by being forces to buy more maps (some of which I rarely saw in the rotation), when I was already paying monthly to even play to begin with.

After that getting tired of being nickeled and dimed (and quick, unpleasing experience with CoD online), I gave up on online multiplayer. I also never liked MMOs, so no subscriptions there. The super collectors editions today are junk, so I'm probably not spending more than $60 a game that way, either.

You could also say I spent $310 on Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy, since it was the only game I had in my Wii's drive for more than 1 hour at a time, until late in the Wii's life. (I didn't even start buying the few other good games until after the Wii U was announced.)

I think it was $250 AUD for Assassin's Creed II Black Edition, but it might have been $150. I actually don't remember. I'm going to lean towards the latter though, because $250 seems outrageous to me and I don't think I would have done that. Any Aussies remember the price?

EDIT - It was $150.

If you include DLC and repurchases, I've spent over $500 on GTA V.[footnote]Bought it on Xbox 360(Collector's Edition), PS3 and Xbox One and bought over $100 on cash cards. [/footnote] Disposable income and a lot of free time is a dangerous thing.

Well, based on this comment right here...

Recently, I think that title goes towards Tales of Xillia 2 Collector's Edition at $129.99 original market price at my local GameStop without tax... I mean, most of the collector's editions I end up buying usually never go over $99.99 without tax, but this specific CE was $30 more than the Tales of Xillia Collector's Edition and was in a slightly bigger box when I compared both CEs side-by-side...

Other than that, when I finally bought the Persona Q 3DS XL for myself, it was $174.99 instead of $199.99 since my local GameStop was already taking New 3DS XL pre-orders at the time...
I say the Tales of Xillia games (especially Tales of Xillia 2) take the cake so far... unless I'm willing to spend up to $300 on the collector's edition to Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD ReMIX on Amazon, alone...

Other than that, I really debating about spending 300 bones on the collector's edition of Kingdom Hearts 2.5 even though I know that I'm not actually buying it for the games, themselves, since I already have a copy...

Oh let's see, what was that one game I didn't pirate again?
...not funny? Ok then, sorry! Ermm, I don't subscribe to any game or buy bollock edition versions, sooo that just leaves normal games, right?

I would say Metro Redux. Yes, it only cost me 22£ cash, but i'm talking faith and hope here. Words cannot describe how much I lost when I realised they sacrificed everything I loved about 2033 just for 60fps 1080p experience. I...just...sold it right away. Why would they COD up the only shooter that I fell in love with? Shut up, money...no one likes you anymore! Well ok, I don't at least.
At least I still have the 360 version. Last light can fuck off though. DISCLAIMER: Not bitter. Only slightly.
