So I just finished reading Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind. Since I've seen various people here say that they're fans of it and I just wanted to ask why?

I mean I didn't think it was bad but I don't see anything particularly great about it.

Is the sequel much better and that's why people like it? I really want to know what makes the book good for some people.

The sequel is a good deal better. I personally liked that it was a fantasy novel that does what a fantasy novel should do, focus on the concept of the story and the myth.

I thought the sequel was a slight step down due to the sudden headfirst plunge into some really supernatural material about halfway in.

I'm referring to the Felurian section.

But I still loved it. I love it because it oozes charisma. And it has a system of "magic" that I actually like (I usually hate magic). Reading about it is almost like a physics or chemistry lesson, and I love that. I love Kvothe and really connect with him (his obsession with music...he's a man after my own heart). All the music sections have me entranced.

And this is true. Much of the deeper lore is shrouded in mystery, which really works to make it more interesting to me.

I did enjoy the story and the way it unfolded...but I do feel like it was a bit over-hyped at the time.

It wasn't as good as I'd heard, but still a very good read. Maybe people built it up too much for you.

I have no idea why I like the book and its sequel so damn much. I just do. I love them. There's just this unbridled joy I get when I read them.

I think it has to do with Rothfuss' writing style, and his take on fantasy. He's an absolutely brilliant writer... I love his descriptions and metaphors and use of the first person perspective/ frame tale. The world he has crafted, even with its mystical bits, is far more believable and sensible than any other fantasy world I've ever seen; his societies are well-thought out, characters are vibrant and all stick out to me (especially Auri and Abenthy).. and the names are actually pronouncable and memorable!

Interesting. I literally think NotW is probably the greatest book that has ever been written.

For me it's an incredible two hit whammy of Rothfuss' ability to craft an incredible story plus characters... And his almost godlike gift with prose.

Seriously, that book has the BEST damn writing I have ever read. And I never stop reading so that's saying something...
