Well as it was the same game in both your second guess got it (although yes the overworld maps in seiken densetsu 2 and 3 (Secret of Mana 1 & 2 for those who didn't know) do look the same as Secret of Evermore, mainly as it borrowed from their succesful formula, but I ramble.
