The New 360 needs a special name

I was under the impression that the new model was outdating the old model completely, I didn't think it needed to have a name since it would inherit all the names of the specific packages that it replaces.

I could be wrong, but I thought they were ceasing production of the older models of 360?

The new model is not called the 360 slim, people are only calling it that because the PS3 model is named Slim.

Microsoft are just referring to it as the NEW Xbox 360 250GB.
