Random videogame based rant is GO!

So I'm in Gamestop picking up my pre-ordered copy of "Assassins Creed 3" when a commercial for/interview with the creators of the new Devil May Cry game comes on. In the interview, among the Gameplay blurbs, the spokeswoman said: "Something new is that besides demonic powers, now Dante will have access to angelic powers because his mother was an angel!"

I literally stopped for a few seconds while checking out and said out loud "Really?...What the hell?"

Most times a nerd ranting about something boils down to "I love the old version! and they changed it now! so WAAAAHHH!!!" for further proof, see every rant about the StarWars prequels.

That is not the purpose of my rant. I recognize the DMC series as a group of okay games, but the only one I played with any consistency and liked was DMC 3 and that was mostly because of the musical score (heavy metal all the way baby)

My issue is not the canonical change, where the main hero goes from merely a half-demon to a half-demon half-angel (And still looks completely human....?) it's that they chose to double down on a cliche "Badass Spackle"

In books, comic or regular fiction, as well as videogames, movies, and numerous other sources, the idea of having a hero or villian who's half of some fantasy species (vampire/werewolf/demon/etc) can be done properly, giving the character some context, a backstory (99% of the time a tragic one) and a couple of weaknesses. But the keyword in the previous statement is "can".

You "can" use the half narrative to illustrate your character as any other writing device. But, far too often, writers will use the half context to cover up any semblance of the person's how's and why's. You can create a backstory showing how a he/she evolved and came into their own, eventually coming to grips with themselves and their place in the world, figuring out their gifts and how to use them.

OR you can skip that shit to the part where they suplex a pick-up truck off of a highway overpass onto a squad of evil (possesed/corporate/pmcs...pick any or all of the above) goons.

Using the "half-&&&&&" context is basically a cheap way for a Michael Bay styled fantasy writer ("Plot? Who gives a shit about plot! Here's a building being blown up!") to skip straight to the action scenes without any build-up/lead-in to how and why a person is able to achieve some sort of amazing feat.

That is my perception of the half-narrative anyway, and I believe (though I reserve the right to be wrong) that is what many in the fantasy community think of the half-narrative as well.

So the fact that the new DMC "Reboot" has decided to double-down on the half-narrative, in a way that makes it piling a cliche on TOP of a cliche, makes my jaw drop at the pants-on-head backwardness.

Though, to be fair, the new DMC game is in my Gamefly Queue and I'll play the crap out of it, and maybe even enjoy it. It's just that from something of a writing perspective that I say "What the actual F---?"

They have a lovely narrative, just look at this story telling!

Previous DMCs may of not had the most original banter, but it's way more entertaining than xXxDeMoNkIlLaH420xXx saying fuck you.

Well luckily I'm not big into the franchise because they made it abundantly clear this time around it's all about throwing shit at a wall and going with whatever sticks.

They have no clue in what direction this is headed and I have that slight feeling the game will reflect that.

DMC4 is already on the PC, and I've heard that besides the repetition (which I honestly don't mind that much) and that people don't like Nero (but I have nothing to hate him for), it's actually pretty good. So, yeah, not all that interested in the Ninja Theory version.

(Also played the demo, so I know that the porting wasn't that bad, and that it works with my gamepad. Win/win/win.)

So far, the only thing that pisses me off is that the names of the brothers are Dante and Vergil. Why not change them to, I don't know, Augustus and Caesar for example? It would have soothed the outrage, it would have shown that devs care about potential customers opinion.

Also, it would've given them a posibillity to input such line from main boss: "I can understand son of Sparda, but no way in hell I am letting some diaper-wearing punk stop my plans".

P.S. When first images of Cole in Infamous 2 appeared, fans reacted in a negative way and Sucker Punch changed the design. Why couldn't Ninja Theory simply change names before game was at later stages of development? Because now it's too late, since most of the dialogues (I think) are already recorded.

But Dante's father chose to protect humans because HE FELL IN LOVE WITH A HUMAN! By logic all Dante's father should care about now is ending war between Angels and Demons, fuck humans.

That as well makes no fucking sense. Without a human half to ground him he shouldn't look like a emo in leather, he should look something close to this

Dante's physical form in this game does not make sense if they changed his mother into an angel.

Does the games story address this or is this one of those, "Oh, we really didn't think about that when we made those changes"?

Pass me a tissue, 'cuz I just came.

It's like if in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, instead of grabbing the sausages and yelling, "Combat cold-cuts!" Michelangelo grabbed a stick and yelled, "I'm gonna hit the shit out of you, you fucking cunts!"

ARGH.

I don't see why anyone who was okay with half-demon would be pissed off by half demon-half angel.

"The main character is half demon! OMG that's so badass, I love him already. Wait... and half angel? That's just stupid!"

Oh this isn't me being a spurned lover of half-demons. I thought of the half-demon thing was "meh, alright." from a narrative standpoint, because it was just used as an excuse for why he could be super-strong/fast/regenerate/magical.

Basically as a writer, I think they could've expanded on the demonic heritage instead of leaving it as a "catch-all" for whatever superpower they want to claim Dante has next. Or they could've left his parentage alone, thy haven't really expanded on it before except as maguffins in DMC 1 and 3. Instead of either of those options, they decided to make him half-angel just so they can pull MORE powers out later and not have to explain how or why he can do it.

At this point I'd settle for why he needed to be half-angel now since half-demon is pretty much a catch-all by itself.

It's better than Ichigo from Bleach, who was recently revealed to be a 'pure Quincy'. This names him half Human, half Shinigami, a Vaizard/Hollow, technically an Arrancar, a Fullbringer, and now is a Quincy. There is literally no race that exists in that universe that he is not (Modsoul doesn't count because it's artifical)

It's not about one being cool and the other not so now that it's both it makes the first not cool by association. It's about altering one of the parent?s species and yet the offspring is still the same.

Half Demon/Half Human = Changes appearance between human and demon.

Half Demon/Half Angel = Changes appearance between human, demon, and angel, or some kind of hybrid demon/angel.

If you take human DNA out of the equation then how does that explain his human form? And second, why does he even get stronger as you play through the game? Without a human half to chain him down and a angel half now juicing his strength he would be a unrestrained badass 24/7.

When it comes to hack n slash games it's all about the gameplay for me.

2 of my favourite games of all time are ninja gaiden 2, and bayonetta. And despite finishing them multiple times I still have no idea what was going on, or why, and I never cared, because it was only ever nonsensical cheesy gibberish to fight chop up magical creatures.

I've seen videos of the gameplay and ,so far, this game is a must buy for me.

The first is a tired cliche and the other is straight out of mary sue fan fiction. Its a lesser of two evils situation.
