The Next Generation: Are they Entitled?

I was watching Jeopardy a day or two ago and saw a woman lose because she forgot to add the 'g' onto 'waiting'. I went "Ohh, sucks to be her." But she spelled it wrong. Those are the rules.

The kid and his parents signed the contracts to play the game, they (should have) read the rules. Tough luck for them, but he deserves nothing.

And I don't believe it's every different generation that's 'entitled'. I know plenty of older people who are entitled too.

Anyone who expects something they didn't work for or earn, be it respect, grades, tangible things, and so on is entitled. That can be anyone.

Eaaaarrrggh.

Every generation since the beginning of time has considered the next generation to be stupid, entitled, disrespectful, spoiled etc etc.

You parents generation thought this about your generation. You grandparent's generation thought it about your parent's generation.

Somehow I doubt that it just so happens to be our generation who is right.

It just shows that we're going to be exactly as stupid and scared of the slightest hint of changing attitudes as our great-great-grandparents were.
Ninja'd, but seriously, I'm surprised there is a thread after this post.

The only thing I will say, is that I see little kids (I live near a school) as young as 5 having an iPhone and all that expensive stuff. I just wonder where the parents get the money and how they trust their child to look after it. If anything, I would say kids these days are the luckiest so far in a lot of respects, considering the tech they will see in their life time etc.

So what I am taking from this is that each generation is getting worse and worse. If Socrates thinks his next generation was bad he would lose his shit and probably commit suicide.

I dunno. Maybe they have a good reason to feel entitled.

Think about it. We live in a world with tons of unemployed people with degrees. Every one of our generations recently was told that education and hard work would bring us a good life, and with the recession, plenty of us aren't getting what we worked so hard for. It used to be said that if you didn't study, you'd end up working in mcdonalds. Now if you study really hard, you might just get into mcdonalds. Or they'll say you're "overqualified"...

But that's always been the way. Generation after generation, always thinking the one after them is the one that makes it all fall apart, never stopping to realise that maybe, just maybe, we made them this way, and their entitlement, or rebellion, or hippy ideals, or rock and roll music are just reactions to the ills of the last generation.

"Has our political correctness gone out of control?"

Right-o, good thing that generally useful clue to stop reading arrived as late as it did...

But it did, none the less, and I'll toss in my thought on the topic as well. Certainly, not everyone can be a winner. But not winning does not make you utterly useless, either. Middle ground is, as usual, most desirable here. Competition should be allowed to be just that. But not everything must be competitive.

As for the next generation, it does not matter what they do. We'll still see them as shit and dream about the good ol' days. They'll do the same. It's how it works. Presumably, it's one way human beings cope with change.

Way to abuse the meaning of the word entitled. I'm sick of this shit. Why does no one use that word properly any more?
I know! People seem to think that they're entitled to use a word any old way!
If you were trying to be cheeky by providing a bad example of using the word entitled inappropriately then you've just turned the irony meter up to 11... because you just used it in an appropriate manner. "Think that they're" is the quantifier.

If someone BELIVES themselves to be entitled it is them acting spoiled. If someone IS entitled it means they do actually deserve/stand to inherit something.

That being said, I feel our society as a whole is becoming far more "soft" in the West and it is not in our best interests. Many decisions are being made that think about someone's feelings more than the actual practical results.

The schooling system is a total farce. Kids learn stuff but they're seldom ENGAGED in what they're learning.

I've learned more from video games and my hobbies in the last 3 years than I learned in the entirety of my primary and secondary education. I have forgotten most of what I did in my last 3 years of school... and that was the stuff I was graded on. I remembered it because I was going to be graded on it and then I forgot it when I was no longer going to be graded on it.

That's not learning, that's temporary storage of information.

Children today are SMART. They're starting to question the questions. They're wondering about the practicality of it all. The internet allows us to have essentially the entire sum of human knowledge at our fingertips, if we want to know something we can just find it out very quickly. There's no need to store knowledge in our minds that we don't use frequently and don't care about.

Children are being taught to KNOW, not to THINK. If you do not encourage rationality in schools you will simply have irrational people leaving them.

Nah. Every generation thinks they were the best or better than the upcoming one.

I can already see it happening to me as I get older. The road to becoming old is a long one, with just a fraction of a decline.

God-damn it, did you have to explain the joke?! That's the worst kind ignominy! [small](except for some of the other types, which are worse)[/small]

Yeah most people have already said what needs to be said this thread is kinda pointless now. Though I'm sure you were a little shit head before because all of us were. You can't be some kind of God and never been like this before.

What? For real? No, I was born when I was 18. Was never a kid, nope nope nope.

Though, admittedly, when I was a kid we didn't call teachers "sluts" to their face. And besides, whether or not the next generation is worse than the current one, largely depends on the current one. Parenting and all that stuff.

Called my teacher a ***** when I was in fourth grade. Only because she singled me out for that whole year and I became her fucking punching bag of verbal abuse. Seriously sometimes the kids are right in what they say. Would not call them "entitled" for calling a teacher a slut. (By the way that's not the right use of the word).

You're never right in use gendered insults like that though. I can understand swearing at teachers (there's a fair few I knew that shouldn't have had jobs), but "slut"? No.

How is slut a gendered insult? You can call a guy a slut just no one ever does.

Well...yes...because it's only ever used about women, and to attack them for behaviour praised in men.

That still doesn't make it a gendered insult.

An insult only aimed at one gender, about something which is only an insult when levelled at that gender?

How much more gendered can an insult get?

That about sums up my feelings on the topic.
It's just more meaningless buzzword bingo.

Fun fact: People act entitled every damn day, and they aren't always in the wrong.
I'm feeling entitled to eating this doughnut right now. Why? BECAUSE I FUCKING PAID FOR IT.

Seriously, I just want someone big on the internet to run a PSA about the constant misuse of the subject of 'entitlement' (and all related misuse), or at least hang a virtual sign on the Internet's proverbial doorstep for a year with this message:

Dear Internet, please realize that the subjects of entitlement and false sense of entitlement are not the same thing.
THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE SO STOP TRYING TO USE THEM AS SUCH.

That's your opinion. A guy could be called a slut and be very offended by it and no its not aimed at one gender.
