Both the portal and gravity gun changed the way first person shooters worked. And they were revolutionary on both a technical and gameplay level.
Simple topic: Think of a weapon that would change the way people play games as much as those two weapons had.

Valve development having problems coming up with new ideas? Just be blunt, Gabe...

Um... a pistol that makes more damage than throwing a dry stick.[footnote]Actually CS has had it for a long time, but even there it's just couple of them. Hmm...[/footnote]

hmm, a time rewinding gun would be too much like prince of Persia... I don't know, there is an awful lot of natural forces you could f*** up XD

I'd go with a gun that absorbs and releases energy. Explosions? Bullet impacts? All of this wasted energy could be used to fire lasers, or solve puzzle. It would also make battles really turn based: the offence team shoots while the defence teams charges up, and then it's reversed.

How about one that selectively accelerates, decelerates, or even reverses the effect of time on the object it targets? Locked door? Just "rewind" it to a time when it was open... or "fast forward" it to a time when it decays and falls apart. Uses on living things would have dangerously unpredictable results...

The portal gun didn't revolutionize anything. The only thing that's used it since portal is Darksiders.
The Gravity gun was just a grab and throw button.

A Newton Blaster!

Shoot in one direction and you go flying in the opposite direction (as already seen in No Time to Explain and probably numerous other things).

Would be interesting to see this in a 1st person, 3 dimensional game though, I don't think it has been done (probably wouldn't work very well though, what with not being able to see where you're going an' all, but I think it could be interesting if done well).

Magnetic field generator, you can use it to create a magnetic field that either attracts or repels metal. You can create a magnetic field to repel metal around yourself to protect yourself from bullets or create a magnetic field around an enemy so that all the bullets get sucked towards him.

Mass manipulator, increase or decrease the mass of objects. Decrease the mass of heavy objects so they're easier to move. Increase the mass of enemies so that they can't move or sinks into the ground or increase the mass of an object above the enemy so that it falls and crushes him.

Heh.

Thread praises Valve. Souplex turns up to poo-poo said thread.

So regular that you could set your watch by it.

Anyway, Darksiders was just the only game utterly shameless enough to imitate the portal gun. Everyone else had the decency to realise what a blatant rip-off that would be. Kind of like if someone were to suddenly decide to make a movie about a crippled ex-marine guy who goes to a planet inhabited by tall blue feline people.

Also an idea similar to the Portal gun: a tunnelling gun that can create holes in walls which then close again after a new opening is made.
Or even a more standard one which literally blasts holes in the wall which will not close, so you have to be careful about what you destroy.

Maybe a wind gun. It would be similar to the gravity guns push-jolt function, but more of a steady force than a one time push.

Perhaps some kind of gun that creates solid material onto surfaces it hits. It could be made so that a limited volume of material can be made at any time and that the material is still affected by physics, so it would fall if it lost its supports and break under its own weight if stretched out into unstable structures.

Oh the many gameplay possibilities. :D

Geography editor.

A gun that can raise or lower parts of the battlefield.

i.e. someone is shooting at you so you take a shot at the ground at their feet.
1. a small hill shoots upwards hurling the guy into the air.
2. a crater forms dropping the guy allowing you to cross over and take him down.

It's not much of a weapon, but it provides a new aspect to puzzle solving problems.

I guess the next step from the portal gun would be the time-modulation gun. It would fire balls of unknown matter to a distance specified by the player. Once the projectile reaches its set distance, it expands into a sphere of influence that slows, reverses, stops or speeds time. Up to three sphere can be deployed at a time.

Also, anything passing through these slow-sphere can have its direction of travel changed by the player with a few nudges. The possibilities are endless!

I've not played it, but according to Yahtzee's Singularity review, there's a watch that does that. Not quite a gun, per sé, but still.

N64 Goldeneye and Timesplitters: Future Perfect had one of those, though they weren't guns :(

It would be interesting if they made a sound modification device. It wouldn't really be a gun but something that can either amplify or silence sound in an area. So if you create a silent zone, you can fire a gun without creating any noise, making it ideal for sniping. However, it also prevents you from hearing anything, making it easier for enemies to sneak up on you. If you amplify sound, you can hear enemies from farther away or maybe even hear enemy chat but you also get a lot of noise that can distract you.

Someone should tell Jack Thompson about Portal so we could laugh at what he finds offensive about it.

Uhm, a gun that fires... Lava. And you carry another gun that fires water, and the lava physics is really slow so you can build your own cover by combining the two. Then you'd use the lava for an offensive weapon, and the water gun could have a healing abilities too.

We'd call it Fire vs. Water: Rock Ops!

What is this herresy you speak of?! Somewhat realistic weapon damage has NOTHING to do in my realistic shooters! Be gone, demon!
...
Now to kill that guy over there, hope this 30 round magazine will be enough...

So... you're right because... you're right?

Huh.

That may just be the most efficient example of circular logic I've ever seen.
