FUCKING. DARMANITAN. Sheer Force ability, Fire Punch increased with PP UPs, and Belly Drum, holding a flame plate or equivalent. EV train for ATK. Hot damn, I had one and solo'd the elite four with it. Not the fifth guy, but whew. Also, I've always had an Ampharos on my team. I love that thing.

All Pokemon have their uses, I've learned that from nuzlocking, especially evident when you take out Lance's Dragonites with a goddamn Ambipom and Raticate.

Anyway, I'll have to come up with a list. I'm too tired right now to logically piece one together from experience.

However, hands down, I do have to say none of my love for the Elekid/Electabuzz/Electivire line will ever dwindle. With such powerful electric attacks and such a high speed stat, he is faster than Dragonite. Plus, he can learn Fire and Ice Punch from the move tutor, so you can also SE that Dragonite.

So Electivire for Electric (Though I don't much like his looks...)

I have to say, reading Pokemon threads on non-pokemon forums is always a bit weird thanks to the mish-mash of people who are versed in the competitive metagame and know what they're talking about, and people who... aren't and don't.

I wouldn't write off jumpluff too fast. A fantastically good annoyer and almost singlehandedly responsible for a respectable number of wins vs Uber teams back in 4th.

Here are a few numbers to look at.

498-502, 504-505, 511-516, 519-521, 527-528, 531-536, 538-539, 550, 554-555, 563, 568-569, 574-576, 580-584, 590-591, 594, 599-601, 618, 626, 641-642, 645.

Whether you like them or not, you cannot deny the fact that these Pokemon were uninspiring and unoriginal in terms of their conception. The thing that makes a great Pokemon game is 1.) the Pokemon available in the game and 2.) replay value. I did not like the Pokemon, and I won't restart this game ever again.
Because all the pokemon in the older generations were totally awesome to look at, and really interesting and inventive?

There are bad pokemon every generation, singling this one out doesn't make much sense.

True, but two important points.

The first is that the above Pokemon were the very first Pokemon. Many people tend to discredit the Gen 1 Pokemon because they do not look as appealing or complex as the current Gen Pokemon. However, there in lies the charm of the Original Pokemon: that despite their seemingly basic design, they still manage to be remembered for it.

The second is that there's no excuse for Gen 5 to have so many ill conceived Pokemon. The fact that there are bad Pokemon designs in the first Gen means that there shouldn't be nearly as many 4 Gens later.

It seems that the only reason there are so many badly designed Pokemon was because they wanted to make their quota of 150+ new Pokemon to "reboot" the series by catching these Pokemon exclusively. Now in B2/W2 you can catch previous Gen Pokemon from the get go. Yeah, so that unique concept lasted longer than I though. Hey are Triple/Rotation battles still a thing in B2/W2? Because they promoted the hell out of them in B/W and I found it very lacking.

I don't remember the originals having A Hydra, a Spider, or a giant fucking centipede.
First of all, 3 examples out of 156 is hardly a valid sample (and one of them isn't a good example at all because Ariados and Spinarak are both spiders). Secondly, there is a lot of Pokemon that bare resemblance to older ones (e.g. Sewaddle and Caterpie, Treecko and Snivy etc.) but that's not been a problem before. Every generation has introduced a normal-flying type bird early on in the games (Pidgey, Hoothoot, Taillow, Starly and Pidove) and Wurmple and its evolutions were clearly inspired by Caterpie and Weedle.

What I'm saying is that Pokemon has always stuck to a certain formula, but that's what works for the series. Besides, it'd be more surprising if there WASN'T any "copies", since there's 649 of them now.

Kind of does. I believe everyone's point that argues this is now that we've crossed the 600+ mark the designers are running out of ideas. You can match up the pokemon that are at least aesthetically pleasing to being a reskin of something from a previous generation. All you're left with after that is a hand full of novel ideas with the rest being silly designs.

Thankfully we are not QUITE out of ideas yet. I'm still hoping they make a Bug/Dark Pokémon based off my home state's unofficial state bird...the mosquito. So if there IS a Gen 6 (and I'm sure we're all thinking there will be), it should be interesting to see what comes next.

This is actually turning into a more fun discussion than I was expecting. Thanks for that, guys!

You wouldn't have been the first. Several people on GameFAQs actually wondered what would happen if there was a moral choice system in Pokémon where you could choose to be the villian instead of the hero. I think I may have mentioned the game "Black & White" in relation to that...
