Seriously, the zombie apocalypse scenario shows the monster in much the same way that the film Aliens did. The actual villain is humanity's distrust of one another and greed, and the zombies are merely a catalyst that demonstrates this. Romero's films were a visionary social commentary more than anything else. Therefore, as a rule, zombies must have some tongue-in-cheek humor about pop culture or where society is heading when they appear.
The Walking Dead and World War Z fall under the category of social commentary zombie things. 28 Days Later is also arguably a member of this category. Evil Dead, however...

People usually die for sheer stupidity, like reaching out a previously locked door to grab some unimportant thingy on the ground only to be bitten by the zombie hidden behind said door. Usually the survivors all die because of another survivors stupiduty/greed/fear/laziness. The count usually starts off around a dozen at the most and by the end there is usually only one or a few.

My remedy: just kill everyone around you leaving only yourself is a sure way to survive.
That's when you get injured and die thinking "Damn...shoulda seen that one coming."

Touche my good man.....
Just looking out for you. And quite possibly myself.

That brings up the wonderful paradox of you now being a stupid/greedy/fearful/lazy douchebag. You were stupid for killing off your friends and fellow survivors, greedy for wanting the whole "living" thing exclusive to you, afraid of dying, and didn't want to expend the effort of surviving as a group. You will die in 5...4...3...2...ZOMBIE!

True and yet with the total breakdown of society It may be the ones that forego the rules of civilization and social pecking order that make it the longest or all the way to the end.

Well, the total breakdown would result from society's internal corruption, rotting away much in the same way that the flesh on the wonderful zombie-bones does... I think I'm officially just rambling at this point as I make a tenuous connection to how only those with the willpower to usher in a new golden age of society will survive and go straight for the jugular. The zombie apocalypse scenario is just one of the ones with the most appeal, from a cinematic standpoint. It gives a glimpse into human drama with a Jhonen Vasquez-ian twist to it as ragtag survivors who in any other scenario might have been bitter enemies try to make it to some kind of safe haven together. Hollywood naturally misses the point on a lot of these, though, failing to balance the action with the acting...
