So, the pagan expansion for Crusader Kings 2 came out today, and want to hear this forum's impressions on it. I've been playing it and am really enjoying it! The main focus is Vikings, but special options have been given to the era's other prominent pagans. I'll be on my longship as you discuss.

Been playing it pretty much all day and having a good deal of fun with it, currently trying to play as Viking dynasty, can't remember the name but they're the ones that start in Nordland. Actually managed to get most of Norway under my bootheel before my third son offed me and my lands fell into civil warfare.

Also the Ylingling (sp?) dynasty are a bunch of cockroaches.

I started as the petty king of Jutland. Wiping out the Knytlings in one generation was sweet.
Oh, I wanna do that! I usually play Sweden or some vassal, and the damn Danish insist on being a huge boulder in my path to the continent. I will have my revenge ...

In The Old Gods, I came pretty far with Svithjod. You start out needing just one more territory and a wad of cash to found the Kingdom of Sweden, so within ten-ish years of raiding and subjugating I was the first King in the North.
That title made things absurdly easy for a while. I could suddenly vassalize every count in the de jure Kingdom. Then, once I hade those 8+ territories under my banner, most of Norway joined as well because they feared our power! Wham, within three weeks of founding the Kingdom I ruled most of the Scandinavian peninsula, with no blood spilled! (Hardly the Viking way, but meh :p)
The next fun consequence of that was that I suddenly controlled two Holy Sites of the Norse faith, so once I made up a reason to invade Sjaelland and take a third, I could reform the faith. I was suddenly the head of the religion, like a Viking Caliph, and could wage Holy Wars on pretty much all of Europe!
That was all done in the lifetime of the original starting character. His prestige and piety at the time of death was pretty silly!

TL;DR: Starting out as Svithjod can give you a big boost at the start. Avoid it if you don't enjoy easy mode ...

BTW, have any of you figured out how to get rich off looting? After the first few years I kept getting stomped on by doom stacks of 12-15 thousand troops wherever I went in Europe =(

I have nothing to contribute to the thread(I want tot get into Crusader Kings though), but I just have to say two things

Did anyone else think of the old gods from Game of Thrones when they saw the tile? Also I find it hilarious everyone in this thread has a join date of atleast 3 years ago and have posted so little.

The best places to loot are republics, or kingdoms at war. The new Carolingian successor states, Venice, Amalfi, and Rome are easy pickings. Also, you don't have to finish the siege, just get all the unprotected loot and sail onto the next county.

It's because we're too busy playing gaemz! ;) Alt comment: I didn't choose the Lurk Lyfe, the Lurk Lyfe chose me!
I thoroughly recommend CK2. It's full of power trips: taking the Holy Land, founding your first empire, assassinating a whole dynasty ... Try a multiplayer game with friends who've got it if you can, and/or check out some Let's Plays before.

I guess I just had bad luck with the Carolingians then. Hitting the republics sounds smart though, gotta try that. And I did figure out the bit about only taking the unprotected loot, but on the Eastern rivers that amounts to about 4-10 gold per province =/

I've been playing a long ass game as Portugal, the vikings were a minor hassle until the mastodontic Scandinavian Empire decided to take Galicia and Leon, A few succession civil wars and general disinterest in the area made them leave except for one province in Galicia that I snatched away a few generations later. The arabs are actually being more of a problem with the reconquista and all.

CK is pretty harsh, probably the hardest Paradox game other than Hearts of Iron. The Pagans seem to be immensely overpowered now but it'll be fixed in time.

Loving it. I started as a custom chief of Trondelag, took more land pretty easily, forming the Petty Kingdom of Trondelag and then Kingdom of Norway all with one ruler. Then I formed the empire of Scandinavia with his successor, gavelkind didn't impact him too badly and by the end of his reign he held all the Scandinavian kingdom titles except for Denmark and reformed the Norse religion.

Also, first time I've seen the AI form any empires other than the titular Latin Empire...

Oh the youtube video thing is a great idea, thanks, going through the tutorials is just so annoying. I bought this game a while ago on sale and tried the tutorial and forgot about it.
