Bens grip on the hammers handle tightened just before the strike. The was it, he was actually going to make the hit. Closing his eyes just before the moment of impact his body slammed hard into Voltage while the jaggedly pointed end of the handle ripped through his suit and inside his body. He'd done it. Whatever happened now, VOltage was done for.

A blast of electricity exploded out from him though Ben kept his hands tight on the handle. Loads of current arced off Voltages body and jumped across Ben thankfully channeled by Voltages own power. That much he expected from him. What came next he didn't. The electric blast was directed at someone else, throwing the morph off his head. He still hadn't dealt with Ben yet.

Gripping the handle right at the base, Ben could only watch in suprise as Voltage pulled it out of his own chest. The blood was profuse but it didn't seem to stop him, especially when he turned on the spot and hit him with a kung fu kick. The force of the impact took him completely by suprise throwing his body off to the side and the handle out of his hands. Ben hit the ground hard as his world flickered dimly before his eyes and then went black.

Seeing Voltage kick Ben aside, Alex was quick to stand up, but then became afraid of getting any closer. This guy still had a sword, and he wasn't fully finished with his mace.

Suddenly, the air around him felt swamped and strangely fluid, and his vision began to darken. Feeling around, he felt a sickening feeling like he was reaching into someone as the mist wrapped into his clothes like thick fog.

Although he heard voices from his comrades, he was worried about speaking up and clamped his mouth shut before putting his hand over his face. If this black fog was an Omega power, he didn't want any part of them inside his stomach or lungs.

When the fog began to pull away by rising, to his horror, he saw that Voltage was gone, sword and all. Taking a step forwards and looking around wildly, he tried to track the black fog, but this late at night, it was hopeless. As the horrors from the last five minutes rushed back over him, he felt drained and almost unwilling to look at Enapay's decapitated body.

------------

Meanwhile, Voltage felt his form and sword drop a ways onto the same roof from before. He hit the concrete rafters with a slump, and his sword clinked next to him. Still bleeding profusely from the wound, he clasped his left hand over his, swearing under his breath, then went for his sword. Inspecting the blade, it thankfully wasn't dented, even from the earlier blows.

Phantom then began to shape himself into his human form again, looking down on Voltage with his arms crossed. "If you're going to leave me with a debt to repay," Voltage said as he sheathed his blade. "that's fine. As long as this heals properly."

Slowly, very slowly, the world started to come back into view. It was a weird feeling, but then he hadn't been knocked unconscious from being kicked in the head before. Still, he expected it to hurt more than it did. But even so, the world was coming back, the blackness leaving him. And as he looked around he began to see familiar faces, and missing ones. Namely, Voltage was gone.

"Oh god..." Ben said as he started to pick himself up again. He held the side of his head that had been kicked in as he stumbled upright and staggered forward a few steps, finally recomposing himself and getting his bearings. Voltage was indeed gone. Not only could he not see him, but he couldn't feel him either, anywhere. And then there was Enapay. He was gone, and for the life of him he couldn't say whether that was a good or a bad thing. Surely he didn't deserve death, but this way he was out of his hair. The rest of the group though were still alive and kicking, and they probably wouldn't be any happier to see him. It was time to disappear.

Or...was it? Alex had vouched for him and together they'd just taken down a powerful omega, so their opinions may have changed. It was anyones guess, but if he did stay he needed a contingency. Without Enapay to borrow from he needed someone else. Roar was his first choice, but he didn't want to hurt them. For all they'd done to him, he had no reason to harm him. But he wanted to discourage them if they did. And for that purpose, intimidation would work well.

The crystal omega would do what he wanted to do as he focused on her. It wasn't the first time, so this time he knew what he was going to do. That itching, irritating feeling moved over his skin, just like before. It wasn't unlike being in the insulation. Once he had a firm grasp on it though, then he cut it loose. That itching turned into several points on his body that eventually split his skin and pushed through his shirt and jacket. Long spikes pressed out of his shoulders and along his arms and back giving him the appearance of a biker thug in pink crystal. Surely the color didn't do much for him, but that shouldn't have mattered as long as no one tried to test him. Hopefully they wouldn't, because he didn't have a backup plan.

Before Erica had the chance to attack, the area was flooded with a swarming darkness that made it impossible to see anything. Then it was gone, apparently taking Voltage with it, but leaving Enapay's headless corpse behind.

In the silence that followed, the full weight of this horrible truth finally hit her. "Oh...oh God..."

Someone who just moments ago had been alive and speaking... was now gone, reduced to a lifeless pile of flesh.

Overcome with a wave of nausea, Erica found herself throwing up in the bushes, unable to take what she was seeing. Even after all she had seen over the years, this was differentm this was personal.

When she looked up, she was somewhat irritated to see that the mimic had copied her powers again... but why he had she had no idea.

"I don't know what your deal is," she said weakly, "But the danger is gone now, there's no need for a show of strength."

Erica had no idea if this would persuade him to back down, but she would at least try. Now that the battle was over, they all needed to rest.

Dawn was still on her knees. She was breathing slowly, but deeply; her hands were clenched and shaking; and smoke was escaping from her exposed skin again, thicker than before.

She got labouriously to her feet, looked around... then turned and began walking away.

Alex's immediate thoughts went to Ben and Marcus as he tried to shake the nasty feelings he was experiencing. Ben was first. He was looking shaky as he got to his feet, but his borrowing of Erica's powers was noticeable even from where he was and was, to him, a decent indication of him being mostly OK.

Marcus on the other hand looked like he was about to explode in anger. He couldn't blame him though. They nearly had Voltage, both he and Ben. Then, the fog...and he was gone. "Damn. He wasn't kidding." Alex thought.

Looking over to the south side of the grass field, he then saw Dawn, wandering away as if she was suddenly unable to function on her own. Quickly picking his pace up, he made his way towards her. "Dawn. Hey. You OK?" Alex called out.

A full second after Alex gets done speaking, Dawn stops and slowly turns around, revealing her expression. It can only be described as "hostile". Even her eyes have this dim orange backlight, as if her retina were on fire.

Her heavy, angry breathing stops long enough for her to say, "I don't want you to talk to me."

Besides her shoulders heaving from her breath, she doesn't move.

She takes a deep breath and spoke in low tones. "I spent the last three years almost completely alone, Alex. After I was betrayed by someone I once called a friend. Finally, I meet this group," she glances at the rest, "and I think, 'They don't seem so bad.' I even let one get close. Let him in on a secret or two. Then our lives are threatened."

She turns all the way back around. "By some maniac. Then, out of nowhere, another person I could honestly call 'friend' is decapitated." A pause, a rueful smile. "Even better, his murderer got away, Alex." The smile gives way to a scowl. Dawn had to almost physically restrain herself from lunging forward. Then she had to stop herself sobbing. "I can't take it anymore. It's happened too many times. But this one was avoidable, and I saw it coming."

Finally, she aims a smoldering finger at Alex. "I blame you," she says quietly. "I blame you for this. If we had just finished the guy like I said we should, this wouldn't have happened."

Her hand catches fire as her voice gets louder with every word. "Don't come after me. Don't speak to me. Don't even glance in my general direction, any of you," she swept the burning hand at the rest of the group; she ended quietly, "or so help me God, I'll roast you alive."

She extinguished her hand and resumed her slow pace back down the road.

Marcus watched Dawn's outburst out of the corner of his eye as he bit his lip.

"You shouldn't let her go off like that," said a voice in his head.

"Why not?" he responded in his thoughts.

"It's not what Enapay would want. He wouldn't want her, or any of you, to self-destruct for him."

"How the hell would any of you know what he would want?" Marcus thought angrily.

"We don't, but you do," it replied.

Marcus thought about this. Ever since reabsorbing the part of himself that had Enapay had been drenched in at the fire, Marcus felt a sudden connection with him. A subtle, yet growing bond that had been unexpectedly shattered. It was this bond that argued with Marcus' instincts, telling him to go after Dawn. Eventually, despite all logic, Marcus did just that.

"Dawn," he called. "Hey, Dawn!"

Marcus walked quickly and pushed past Alex to catch up to her.

"Look, I know what you're feeling, I'm feeling it too," he started, which was true. Rage and guilt still burned inside him.

"If you want to walk away, that's fine. If you want to burn me for trying to stop you, that's fine too, but..." Marcus paused as he tried to find the right words, then he realized he already knew them.

"But, that's not what Enapay would want. He wouldn't want you, or any of us, to self-destruct because of him, and if you go off on your own now, that's exactly what will happen. If you're going to go, at least let me come with you," Marcus said, quiet enough for only Dawn to hear.

Marcus finished and wondered how much of what he said he really believed and if the only reason he offered to go with Dawn was just to get away from this place.

Seeing the look Dawn gave him as he came closer, Alex stopped and stared back at her, swearing he saw something in her eyes despite the still burning gas pool close-by before she told him not to speak. Alex listened and said nothing, but nonetheless, never took his eyes away from her.

The stand off they had, just staring into each others eyes for a time, was like something out of the Old West, just with Dawn being the only one with a real gun left: her powers of flame. Even with the concrete slab semi formed into a mace in his hands, Alex knew he was outgunned, and listened as Dawn began to spill enough beans about herself to make his body feel flush with guilt.

Ultraman950 said:

At that point, Alex was torn between feeling upset and wanting to return the bile at Dawn in every way he could. She was right. He had kept Voltage alive long enough to let him get away. He had made a mistake by his behavior and put lives in danger, but at the same time, he refused to believe he was the only one to blame.

Dawn had been cooed by Enapay's dialogue for a good length of time while they were all holding him down. He was the one who wasn't taking the situation seriously before, laughing off someone who could throw lightning as easy as fire a gun. Yet, she was blaming it all on him? No. He wouldn't accept that.

Shaking his head, Alex refused to listen to anymore of her speech until Marcus shoved past him, shocking him to attention again.

Alex expected the worst from Marcus's action just now, but nothing was happening...yet. Either Dawn was too jaded blaming him that she just needed someone else around her, or she was about to snap.

"But, that's not what Enapay would want. He wouldn't want you, or any of us, to self-destruct because of him, and if you go off on your own now, that's exactly what will happen. If you're going to go, at least let me come with you."
Alex huffed and began walking away at that. If Dawn was being truthful about her words, he was better off just backing off and letting his own anger die down instead of opening his mouth. "At least if Dawn does decide to flip out, I'll be far enough away." he thought, making his way over to Ben and Erica.

Roar had turned around and saw the argument. He decided to stay in the sideline, staying quiet letting it unfold feeling if he should say anything it would either do nothing or make it worse. He is a bit surprise to learn about Dawn having a closer relationship with Enapay. When she threatens Marcus and Alex, he could of demand her to calm down but he is not a forceful guy. He checks his throat and it is still swollen so his roar is temporary out for the time being.

Dawn stares at Marcus like she can't believe what she's hearing, even as fire spreads again over her arm. She was visibly shaking by this point.

"Did you not hear me? Did you not think I was serious?" She moves her burning hand back as if about to throw something.

Then Marcus brought up Enapay, and the fire spread to her other arm and turned a threatening shade of blue. Despite that, hot, steaming tears welled up in her eyes and she couldn't keep her voice steady.

"Just shut up. Okay? I don't have anything against you, Marcus. Don't change that." She inhales. "And I've learned my lesson. It took me five years, but I've learned it. I'm on my own from now on. Never follow me again."

She resumed her pace, letting the fires go out. As soon as she was out of earshot, she began sobbing.

Erica watched Dawn leave, knowing full well what she was feeling. After all, she had been there before...

"C'mon," she said, her throat feeling off from the vomit, "Let her go, she has to handle it herself."

And with that, she went into the building, where Lauren was waiting for them to return. No children were around, so she had most likely shooed them all up to bed, hopefully before things got... violent.

"Are you-?"

"Yeah, I'm fine," Erica lied, "I just need some sleep. The others should be back soon, but don't be surprised if we're a few people short."

That said, she made her way upstairs into a spare room with a few beds open. She removed her boots and jacket before collapsing on the mattress and was soon dead to the world.

Marcus sighed sadly as Dawn walked away. He didn't think his words would convince her of anything, but it was worth a try anyway.

Marcus turned around slowly, still trying to hold back tears. "Umm, wh-what are we going to do with..." Marcus started, unable to bring himself to say 'Enapay's body', or even look in its' general direction. "We can't just leave him there," he said, partially for the sake of the children, but mostly because he didn't want to leave Enapay lying there like thrown out trash.

Roar reply to Marcus "We should at least give him a proper burial ground but I don't know where would be a good place to bury him..."

Consider what had happen he wanted to head back into the orphanage and recover but he is compel to deal with Enapay body first.

Removing his gloves, Alex replied. "Let's take him to the south end of the field, and bury him there. I can make the grave; It's the best use I have of my powers right now anyway." Alex hated saying that, devaluing his ability to shape matter the way he just had, but it was their best option.

Dawn continued down the middle of the long, empty street, clearly not in any hurry. Her arms were jealously gripping her sides, as if she were afraid her guts would spill out if she let them drop.

Tears rolled freely from her half-open eyes and dropped down to the ground, her hoodie, her neck, her arms, whatever happened to be underneath them. The temperature around her fluctuated almost violently, as if she were a broken and indecisive central heating unit.

She silently argued with herself in her head. She knew what she was doing was stupid and wrong, and that she was acting irrationally. She also knew that it was as much her's and Enapay's fault that the latter was dead. But she refused to go back. Especially after her little display.

She just kept walking and crying, to nowhere in particular.

Somewhere else...

All was silent in the interior of the warehouse, nothing seemed to stir. But then the shadows seemed to flicker and move before a pillar of darkness rose up, shaping itself into humanoid forms, that of Phantom and Voltage.

Phantom frowned at the empty warehouse. "Damn, looks like nobody's here." He dropped Voltage's limp form none too gently to the floor, he walked through the warehouse, eventually reaching the spot where his boss usualy sat.

"Humph. It's just like him to be out at a crucial moment." He muttered, then began to reach out towards the chair, when...

"What are you doing?"

Startled, Phantom spun around to see Winterfrost coming towards him, the monstrous Manticore at her side.

"Ah, it's just you," He sighed, then turned to face her. "I just got back from where the rats have holed up, seems they did a number on him." He waved a hand at Voltage's general direction.

Winterfrost just frowned. "And you didn't step in?"

"Hey, the boss wanted me to watch, to see what they were capable of," Phantom protested, hands raised, "Besides, the kid just jumped in on his own. He took out one of them... but that just pissed them off."

Manticore wandered over to Voltage's prone form, sniffing at him before baring his teeth.

"Hey, stop that!" Winterfrost snapped, and blasted Manticore with an icy cold spary that made him hiss and back off. "I swear, it's been a hassle handling him these five years, even before the Event..." She muttered, rolling her eyes.

"Where's the boss, anyway?" Phantom interupted. "We kind of have a situation here."

"He left about a half hour ago," WinterFrost responded. "Apparently, something came up, but he still wants us to watch those kids... he's sure he can salvage the situation. And since Carrion and Brutus are doing work uptown, I'm watching Manticore, and Voltage is down for the count, I guess you're the one to do it."

Now it was Phantom's turn to frown. "Humph. Looks like I'm stuck babysitting again... I'll keep you posted if anything comes up." And then he was gone in a swirl of darkness.

For a while, no one remaining outside said much to each other. Roar and Marcus, along with Alex, occasionally looked over at the body of Enapay, still lying in the lightning caused crater a short walk from the front steps.

Alex began to take a step towards the body, hoping to see if he could just bury it there, but then stopped himself before he even finished. He couldn't do it. His heart still racing some, he about-faced and walked away to the southern most part of the plot, where there was still some grassy spots unaffected by nearby weeds.

The spot he found was certainly large enough to make a grave with, but this was the first time he ever had to bury someone who was in some manner friendly to him. For a time, he couldn't gather his thoughts and just knelt in the grass, his hands on his thighs. Looking over to everyone else, most of whom were going inside, for a second he considered abandoning the idea.

"No. I can't." Alex thought. Laying his hands on the ground, he dug his fingers into the dirt, revealing enough of the earth underneath to allow himself to work.

Roar had wanted Alex to do all of the work since he felt unpleasant at the whole situation. Just looking at the corpse wanted him to vomit but he is stronger than that but he knew that it isn't fair to let Alex do all of the hard work. Roar had thought he should be used to it since it wasn't the first corpse he had seen.
He started to think about his past when his Omega power had awaken and cause his old neighbourhood to crumble down and he saw some corpses from the aftermath of his Roar alone. He then think back all of the times when the alter animals refuse to back down against his voice. This was the cue to let those government soldiers to slaughter them all even though some of the alter animals were not aggressive at all. None the less the past memories are not helping since he knew the corpse was Enapay and not some random corpse he didn't know.

He said to Alex "Here let me help."

He then kneels down and uses his hand to dig into the soil mimicking Alex.

Marcus inhaled deeply and sighed, knowing what he had to do. Focusing his powers, Marcus's hands became a thin liquid that spread from him and went under Enapay's body and head. Once in position, Marcus's hands and lower arms changed shape, forming into a gurney that lifted Enapay's remains. With a little extra concentration, Marcus created a sheet to drape over his deceased friends body.

With his morbid task complete, Marcus lifted and carried Enapay's corpse over to where Roar and Alex were digging, hoping they'd finish soon.
